Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: THE ART OF SURVIVAL

The dungeon anomaly happened too quickly, but they didn't stop. There was no reason to. No exit behind them. No safety ahead. Only a single path, forward.

The battlefield they had just carved out slowly dissolved into the unnatural silence of the dungeon, but neither Lee Hyun nor Min Seoah relaxed. They had already learned their lesson, the quiet here wasn't peace. It was preparation. For something worse.

Their footsteps moved in sync, steady but cautious, weapons still in hand, senses stretched to their limits. The deeper they went, the more the dungeon changed. The terrain itself became uneven, rising and falling like waves of solid earth, forcing them to constantly adjust their footing. The mist thickened further, clinging to their bodies like invisible chains, dulling their perception just enough to be dangerous.

"…They're adapting."

Lee Hyun spoke quietly, his gaze scanning the surroundings.

Min Seoah didn't deny it.

"…They're not rushing anymore."

That alone was enough to confirm it. The earlier swarm had been overwhelming, yes, but chaotic.

This, was different. And then, it began again. This time, they didn't hear them first. They felt them. A faint shift in the air. A disturbance.

Lee Hyun's eyes sharpened.

"…Left."

Min Seoah reacted instantly, her blade sweeping outward.

CLANG.

A goblin's spear was deflected mid-thrust, the attacker retreating instantly after the failed strike. But it didn't continue. It didn't charge again. It disappeared.

"…Hit and retreat."

Lee Hyun muttered.

"…They're testing us."

Before they could reposition, another attack came. From behind. Min Seoah turned but too late to counter directly. But Lee Hyun was already moving. Using Phantom Step. He intercepted the attack, his blade cutting through the goblin cleanly, but again the others didn't follow.

They watched. Waiting. Learning. Like this, moments passed. For a while just a silent and then, another strike. Then another. Each one precise. Each one calculated. They weren't swarming anymore. They were, hunting.

"…They're separating us."

Min Seoah said, her voice calm but sharp.

Lee Hyun nodded slightly.

"…Yeah."

"…And they're doing it well."

Because slowly, without realizing it, their positions had shifted. Not far. But enough. Enough to create gaps. Enough to isolate.

The next attack came with intent. Three goblins rushed toward Lee Hyun from the front, forcing him to engage directly. At the same time, two elites emerged behind Min Seoah. Not rushing. Not reckless. But timed. Perfectly.

"…Seoah!"

"I see them."

Her frost erupted instantly, freezing the ground beneath her as she turned, her blade clashing against the incoming elites. The impact pushed her back slightly, but she held her ground.

Meanwhile, Lee Hyun cut through the three in front of him quickly, but by the time he turned, the distance had widened. Not far. But enough to disrupt immediate support.

"…They're forcing isolation fights."

His expression hardened.

"…Smart move."

The pace increased. The attacks became relentless. But never reckless. Groups of two. Then three. Then elites mixed in. Every wave designed not to overwhelm, but to break coordination.

Lee Hyun found himself constantly repositioning, using Phantom Step repeatedly to maintain proximity with Min Seoah, while also eliminating threats quickly enough to prevent further separation.

Min Seoah adapted just as fast. Her frost domain became tighter, more controlled, no longer spreading wide but focusing on key areas, creating zones of control that limited enemy movement and protected her flanks.

Their fighting style changed. It Evolved. From offense, to survival. Time lost meaning. Minutes blurred into something longer. Their breathing grew heavier. Their movements, still sharp. But slower.

Even with the Devouring Edge sustaining him, Lee Hyun began to feel the strain. His muscles burned faintly, his reactions requiring more effort than before.

Min Seoah's frost, though still deadly, had lost some of its earlier overwhelming spread. It was refined now, but that refinement came at the cost of energy.

"…We can't keep this pace."

She said quietly.

Lee Hyun didn't respond immediately. Because he knew, she was right. But the dungeon didn't care. The next wave came stronger, larger and smarter. This time, they didn't attack immediately. They surrounded. At a distance. Watching. Calculating.

Lee Hyun's eyes narrowed as Player Insight flickered across multiple targets. Levels had increased again.

Level 25… 26… 28…

"…They're scaling with us."

Min Seoah exhaled slowly.

"…No…"

Her gaze sharpened.

"…They're scaling faster."

The first move came from above. A goblin dropped from a tree, its blade aimed directly at Lee Hyun's neck. He dodged instantly, but that was the trigger. The rest attacked simultaneously. From all directions. This wasn't probing anymore. This was execution.

Lee Hyun's body moved on instinct. He activated Dragon Blade Dance. His blade carved through multiple enemies in rapid succession, his movements no longer fluid, but aggressive and efficient. Every strike meant to kill. No wasted motion. No hesitation.

Min Seoah matched him. Her frost surged again, freezing incoming enemies mid-attack, her blade following instantly to shatter them before they could recover.

But the pressure, didn't decrease. It increased. More goblins joined. More elites. Each one stronger than the last. Each one learning and adapting. Avoiding patterns they had already used. A goblin feinted left, then struck right.

Lee Hyun barely blocked in time. Another one baited Min Seoah into attacking, only for a second elite to strike from her blind spot. She twisted, barely avoiding it, but the claw grazed her arm. A thin line of blood appeared.

"…They're predicting us."

Lee Hyun muttered.

"…Then we stop being predictable."

He changed his rhythm instantly. No longer following structured patterns. No longer relying purely on technique. He became, chaotic and unpredictable.

His movements shifted mid-strike, his positioning altered constantly, his attacks coming from angles that didn't follow logic.

Min Seoah noticed immediately. And adapted. Her frost became sharper, more sudden, less gradual. She no longer built control slowly, she imposed it instantly. Freezing and breaking and moving together, they became harder to read. Harder to counter. And slowly, the tide shifted again. Not in their favor. But, away from defeat.

The battle stretched on. Long and relentless. Their bodies began to reach their limits. Breathing heavier. Muscles slower. Reactions strained. Lee Hyun's grip tightened slightly around his sword.

"…We're getting tired."

Min Seoah didn't deny it.

"…But they aren't."

Her voice remained steady. But the truth was clear.

This wasn't a normal dungeon. There was no end in sight. No natural limit. Only escalation. Another wave fell. Then another. Their movements slowed slightly more. But their kills became cleaner. Sharper. More efficient. Because they had no choice. Every movement had to count. Every strike had to end something.

At some point they stopped speaking entirely. No words. No signals. Only instinct. Only awareness. Only survival. Lee Hyun cut down another elite, his blade dragging slightly as he exhaled heavily. Min Seoah shattered a frozen goblin beside him, her breathing steady, but deeper.

They stood side by side. Surrounded by bodies. The mist was still thick. The pressure still rising. And in the distance, more movement. More enemies. More escalation.

Lee Hyun closed his eyes briefly. Just for a second. Then opened them again. Sharper. Colder.

"…We keep going."

Min Seoah didn't hesitate.

"…Of course."

Because there was no other option. No retreat. No pause. No mercy. Only survival. Only growth. Only, war.
