Chapter 61 - Age Means Nothing When Power Learns to Hide It

The hall of the Archduchess's residence had grown quieter since Adrian's arrival in the vampire world.

Not peaceful—never peaceful—but adjusted.

Everything here seemed to adapt around presence instead of resisting it.

Adrian stood near one of the wide arched windows that overlooked the crimson-lit capital. The sky outside never fully turned dark; instead, it deepened into shades of blood-red and violet, like the world was permanently caught between dusk and something older.

Behind him, the Archduchess sat on a raised stone seat that looked less like furniture and more like a throne someone had stopped pretending wasn't a throne.

Her posture was relaxed, but her presence was not.

Hannah had already taken it upon herself to explore part of the residence with Kael, though Kael had made it very clear he was only "observing architecture" and not "participating in vampire sightseeing nonsense."

Selene stood quietly near the edge of the room, as always, watching without interfering.

Niamh stayed close to Adrian, calm and attentive, her gaze occasionally drifting toward the Archduchess with quiet caution.

Lirael was absent for now—taken by Valeria somewhere deeper into the estate, something about "family grounding," which Adrian suspected meant something far more complicated than it sounded.

Which left Adrian in a rare situation:

Direct conversation with the Archduchess alone.

He turned slightly.

"…So," Adrian began, scratching the back of his neck, "about my dad."

The Archduchess didn't react immediately. She was looking at him as if waiting for the real question beneath the question.

Adrian continued anyway.

"You fought him before, right?"

A faint shift in her expression.

"Yes," she said simply.

Adrian leaned forward slightly. "How did it go?"

This time, she paused longer.

Not because she was unsure how to answer.

But because she was deciding how honest to be.

Finally, she spoke.

"It went… poorly," she said.

Hannah's voice echoed faintly from somewhere deeper in the estate, laughing at something Kael said, but here the air tightened slightly.

Adrian blinked once. "…For him or for you?"

The Archduchess's eyes narrowed just a fraction.

"Both," she replied.

That made Adrian pause.

Selene's gaze sharpened slightly.

Niamh tilted her head a little, curious.

Adrian exhaled slowly. "That doesn't sound like a normal answer."

"It is not," the Archduchess said calmly.

She leaned back slightly, crossing one leg over the other.

"When your father fights," she continued, "he does not behave like most humans."

Adrian frowned. "Yeah, I've noticed that part."

A faint, almost imperceptible curve touched her lips.

"And yet," she said, "even then… he is still human."

Adrian folded his arms. "That sounds like there's a 'but' coming."

There was.

But she didn't say it immediately.

Instead, she continued watching him.

"Your father is one hundred and eighty years old monster," she said.

Adrian froze slightly. "…Excuse me?"

Selene's eyes narrowed more sharply now.

Niamh blinked.

Even Adrian's usual casual expression faltered for a second.

"One hundred and eighty," he repeated slowly. "As in… not metaphorically."

The Archduchess nodded.

"The higher human ranks extend lifespan significantly," she said. "Especially Rank Two."

Adrian frowned. "So that's not normal for humans?"

"No," she replied.

A pause.

"Normal humans die."

Hannah's laughter faded somewhere in the distance, as if even she had decided to listen now.

Adrian exhaled slowly. "That explains a lot… and also raises more questions."

The Archduchess tilted her head slightly.

"You have not been told most things," she observed.

"Yeah," Adrian said dryly. "That's becoming a pattern."

Selene glanced at him. "It is intentional."

Adrian shot her a look. "Comforting."

Niamh spoke softly. "They were protecting you."

Adrian sighed. "Everyone keeps saying that."

The Archduchess watched this exchange without interrupting.

Then she added, almost casually, "Your mother is slightly older than your father."

That made Adrian pause again.

"…My mother?" he repeated.

"Yes," the Archduchess said.

A silence followed.

Not heavy.

Just loaded.

Adrian frowned slightly. "So let me get this straight. My dad is 180. My mom is older than him. And I thought we were just a normal family living… what I assumed was a slightly broke lifestyle."

Hannah's voice faintly carried in the distance again.

"Yeah, that sounds about right!"

Kael responded something under his breath that sounded like regret.

Adrian ignored them.

He rubbed his forehead slightly.

"This is getting harder to process than vampire politics," he muttered.

The Archduchess's gaze remained steady.

"You asked," she said simply.

"I regret that I did," Adrian replied honestly.

Selene gave him a brief side glance. "You should not."

Adrian looked at her. "That didn't help."

Niamh gave a faint, apologetic smile.

The Archduchess leaned forward slightly.

"You wanted to understand your father's fight with me," she said.

Adrian nodded slowly. "Yeah."

A pause.

"I'm guessing it wasn't just a spar."

The Archduchess's expression shifted faintly.

"No," she said.

Another pause.

"And if it had continued…"

Her eyes narrowed slightly, as if replaying a memory.

"I do not know who would have won."

Silence.

That landed differently.

Even Adrian stopped joking.

"…You don't know?" he asked quietly.

The Archduchess nodded once.

"Your father fights in a way that is not aligned with vampire logic," she said.

"He does not rely on pressure dominance, nor blood authority."

A pause.

"He creates conditions where his opponent begins to lose before they realize they are fighting."

Adrian frowned slightly. "That sounds like cheating."

"It is adaptation," she corrected.

Selene spoke quietly. "That is why he is dangerous."

Niamh nodded. "He does not belong to their system."

Adrian looked down slightly, processing that.

Then he exhaled.

"…So basically," he said, "he's the kind of person who wins by refusing to lose."

The Archduchess nodded slightly.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Which is why I do not recommend fighting him seriously unless necessary."

Adrian glanced at her. "…That sounds like personal advice."

"It is," she replied.

A faint silence followed.

Then Adrian leaned back slightly.

"Okay," he said. "Then I have to ask."

The Archduchess tilted her head.

Adrian looked directly at her.

"How old are you?"

The room went still.

Even Selene seemed to pause slightly.

Niamh blinked.

Somewhere far away, Kael's voice stopped mid-sentence.

Hannah, from a distance, went quiet for the first time in a while.

The Archduchess didn't react immediately.

She studied him.

Not offended.

Not surprised.

Just evaluating why he asked.

Then she answered.

"I am older than both of them combined."

Silence.

That answer did not land like information.

It landed like a boundary being drawn across reality.

Adrian blinked slowly.

"…Combined?" he repeated.

"Yes," she said calmly.

A pause.

"And significantly."

Adrian stared at her for a moment.

Then exhaled slowly.

"…Okay," he muttered. "That's not reassuring at all."

The Archduchess leaned back again, expression returning to its usual controlled calm.

"Age is not the same as strength," she said.

Adrian nodded faintly. "I'm starting to notice a pattern where that applies to everyone in this world except me."

Selene responded softly, "You are adapting."

Niamh added gently, "Fast."

The Archduchess's gaze shifted slightly toward Adrian.

"You are not yet properly measured," she said.

Adrian raised an eyebrow. "Is that a threat or a compliment?"

"Observation," she replied.

A pause.

Then, almost quietly—

"You resemble him more than you realize."

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

He just looked at her.

Then down at his hands.

"…That's starting to feel like a problem," he muttered.

The Archduchess stood slowly.

"Or an advantage," she said.

A pause.

"That depends on what you become."

Silence settled again.

Not heavy this time.

Just final.

Somewhere deep in the vampire capital outside, the world continued moving, unaware that inside this single residence—

A human, a vampire archduchess, and the shadow of something older than both bloodlines…

Had just begun to understand how distorted their definitions of "age" and "power" really were.
