Chapter 60 - The House That Remembers Its Blood

The Archduchess's residence was not a mansion.

It was a dominion.

A vast structure of black stone and crimson light, rising like it had grown from the world itself rather than been built. Every corridor felt intentional, every hall aware. The deeper they went, the more the air seemed to settle into something ancient and ordered.

Adrian walked slightly behind the Archduchess now, no longer at the center of attention—but not ignored either.

That was the strange part.

In this place, even silence had hierarchy.

Hannah leaned closer to him. "Try not to look too impressed."

Adrian glanced at her. "I'm not impressed."

Kael muttered, "That's worse."

Selene's eyes remained forward, but her voice was low. "This home is alive in its structure."

Niamh nodded softly. "It remembers movement."

Lirael walked ahead calmly, as if she had done this many times before.

"It does," she said simply.

Adrian exhaled. "…That's not unsettling at all."

The Archduchess didn't turn back.

"Do not lag behind," she said.

A pause.

"Or you will be considered irrelevant by instinct."

Adrian quickened his pace slightly. "Noted."

---

They passed through a set of towering double doors carved with shifting crimson symbols.

And the atmosphere changed again.

Warmer.

Not in temperature—but in presence.

Less observational.

More personal.

The Archduchess slowed slightly.

Then stopped.

At the far end of the hall stood someone waiting.

A woman.

Older than Lirael by appearance alone, but not by much. She carried herself with the same refined composure—but softened at the edges in a way that suggested familiarity rather than authority.

Her hair was long, deep black with faint silver strands woven through it like threads of moonlight. Her eyes were a lighter crimson than the Archduchess's—less abyssal, more alive.

She wore simple noble attire compared to the Archduchess, but it still radiated quiet power.

And when she saw them—

Her expression changed instantly.

"…Mother."

The word was calm.

But it carried relief.

The Archduchess stopped completely.

Then, for the first time since arriving home—

Her expression softened.

Not fully.

But enough to notice.

"…You're here early," she said.

The eldest daughter stepped forward.

"I heard you brought guests," she replied.

A pause.

Then her gaze shifted.

And landed on Lirael.

Everything else disappeared.

A beat of silence.

Then—

Her expression broke into a genuine smile.

"…You came back."

Lirael paused.

Just slightly.

"…Yes," she said.

The eldest daughter moved quickly then—closing the distance and pulling her into a brief, firm embrace.

Not ceremonial.

Not formal.

Family.

When she pulled back, her hands stayed on Lirael's shoulders.

"You're still alive," she said softly.

Lirael huffed faintly. "Disappointing?"

"No," the woman replied immediately.

"Relieving."

Silence.

Something in Lirael's expression softened—just a fraction.

Hannah whispered, "Okay, that's rare."

Kael nodded slightly. "Family structure here is different."

Selene watched quietly. "It is honest."

Niamh smiled faintly. "That is why it feels heavier."

Adrian observed silently.

Then leaned slightly toward Hannah. "…So that's the eldest daughter?"

Hannah nodded. "Second child. But first in responsibility."

Adrian frowned. "That's confusing."

"Welcome to vampire nobility," Kael muttered.

---

The eldest daughter finally turned her attention toward the group.

Her gaze moved across them carefully.

Selene.

Lirael.

Niamh.

Hannah.

Kael.

Then finally—

Adrian.

A pause.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"…And who is this?" she asked.

The Archduchess spoke before anyone else.

"The reason you were told to return early," she said calmly.

Silence.

The eldest daughter blinked once.

Then looked back at Adrian more carefully.

Not hostile.

Not welcoming.

Curious.

Adrian raised a hand slightly. "…Hi."

Hannah sighed. "That's your introduction?"

Adrian shrugged. "It worked earlier."

The eldest daughter studied him for a moment longer.

Then tilted her head slightly.

"You don't look like someone who survives in this place," she said.

Adrian nodded. "I get that a lot."

A pause.

Then—

She smiled faintly.

"…Interesting."

The Archduchess stepped forward again.

"This is not a social visit," she said.

A pause.

"Yet."

Her gaze shifted slightly.

"Lirael will remain here during your stay."

The eldest daughter nodded. "Of course."

Then she looked at Lirael again.

"And I will not let her disappear this time."

Lirael sighed. "…I wasn't planning to."

The eldest daughter smiled softly.

"You never plan to."

Silence.

Then—

The Archduchess finally turned slightly.

And looked at Adrian again.

"You will see this household properly tomorrow," she said.

A pause.

"Today, you observe."

Adrian nodded once. "Fine by me."

The eldest daughter studied him one more time.

Then spoke quietly to herself, but audible enough for a few to hear.

"…This is going to be complicated."

Hannah grinned. "Oh, it already is."

Kael muttered, "We're just getting started."

And somewhere deeper inside the estate—

Something ancient shifted slightly.

Not in threat.

But in attention.

Because Adrian Cole had just entered a family where even love carried authority…

And authority never stayed quiet for long.
