Chapter 29 - CHAPTER 29: THE PURPLE INFERNO

The Abyssal Spawn roared, raising its two gigantic obsidian fists into a single dark maul, ready to crush the new threat.

But the Infernal Knight did not even flinch.

The symbiotic armor, now crowned with dark horns and freed from any human moral restraint, did not see a god of destruction before it; it saw only fuel.

[SYSTEM OVERRIDE: PRIME DIRECTIVE - CONSUME]

The Demon brought the blow down—an impact with enough force to level a mountain—directly onto the Knight's head.

Phantsin raised a single armored hand.

The Demon's fist stopped dead as it crashed against the palm of the purple armor. The shockwave shattered the cobblestones in a thirty-meter radius, throwing up a wall of dust, but Phantsin did not retreat a single millimeter. His boots were anchored to the stone as if he controlled gravity itself.

And then, the entropy began.

A frigid, violet mist—the absolute zero of the Void—erupted from the Infernal Knight's palm and spread like a virus up the Spawn's arm. The monster's thick obsidian carapace began to disintegrate immediately, turning into black ash that was furiously sucked into the Aegis's plates.

The demon let out a shriek of absolute terror—high-pitched, guttural, and unnatural.

It tried to pull back. With its free arm, it attempted to tear off its own infected limb to escape the spread, but the Void was faster, and it was starving.

The darkness crept up the spawn's torso, devouring the abyssal magic, consuming the dead flesh, and evaporating the molten stone. In less than ten seconds, the Lord of the Rift—the titan that had terrorized the Academy—imploded upon itself, reduced to a swirling vortex of dark mist that was completely absorbed by the black gem on Phantsin's chest.

The central courtyard of Arcanum Bellator fell into a deathly silence. Only the sound of melting stone crackling beneath the Knight's boots could be heard.

[OMEGA-LEVEL THREAT: ASSIMILATED]

[ENERGY RESERVES: OVERFLOWING]

[WARNING: CRITICAL HUNGER UNSATED. SEARCHING FOR COMPATIBLE BIOMASS...]

The Infernal Knight slowly turned his faceless helm.

Phantsin's mind was buried too deep beneath the metal's parasitic instinct. He no longer recognized allies or enemies. The rules of chivalry had disintegrated. He saw only vital energy, and the purest, brightest mana signature in the entire courtyard was a mere twenty meters away.

The purple iron monster took a heavy step toward the defensive dome where the girls were taking shelter, locking its attention—devoid of all humanity—onto the Aethelwyrd fragment.

"By the Founders!" gasped Vlad Blackthorn, bursting into the central courtyard alongside Zephyr and Korbin.

The three of them had secured the entrance bridge, but the sight that greeted them stopped them dead in their tracks. Their friend, the stubborn Ignis cadet, had become the embodiment of death.

"Dawnfire, stop!" Vlad shouted, but the Infernal Knight didn't even turn his head. He raised a hand toward the defensive dome, charging a blast of void energy that would disintegrate the civilians.

"Containment formation, now!" Korbin roared.

The dwarf sprinted forward and slammed his warhammer into the ground with devastating force. Pushing his Terra magic to the limit, he summoned four thick pillars of solid granite from the earth, closing them into a dome over Phantsin to crush and contain him.

But the Infernal Knight simply kept walking. He phased through the meter-thick granite as if it were wet paper; the stone withered into gray dust before it even touched the purple plates.

"My turn!" Zephyr leapt into the air, his wings beating furiously. With blinding speed, he fired five arrows imbued with wind magic, curving them mid-air to strike the armor's joints.

The hyper-compressed arrows detonated, but the wind's shockwave was instantly swallowed by Phantsin's void aura, not even causing him to break stride.

Vlad didn't hesitate. He summoned all his Shadowfire, sliding low across the ground into a perfect lunge aimed straight for the core on Phantsin's chest.

The Infernal Knight didn't dodge. With a swift, robotic motion, he caught the rapier's blade between his fingers. Vlad's lethal Shadowfire sputtered and died, devoured by a darkness even more ancient. Phantsin delivered a casual backhand with his free hand; the purely kinetic impact sent Vlad flying ten meters away, sending him rolling brutally across the cobblestones.

Squad Seven had been dispatched in less than five seconds.

Phantsin was only a few meters from his target.

"Get back!" Ellie, the elven maid, stepped in front of Flower.

She knew she didn't stand a chance, but her loyalty outweighed her fear. She cast a Celerity spell on herself to move at superhuman speed and unleashed a blinding point-blank Lightning bolt straight at the Knight's visor.

The electricity danced harmlessly over the purple metal. Phantsin simply projected a wave of pure gravity from his chest. Ellie was sent flying, crashing into the remains of a fountain, incapacitated.

"ENOUGH!!"

A small figure stepped alone between the purple monster and the rest of the wounded.

Flower Dawnfire planted the Greenheart Staff into the cracked stone. At twelve years old, she faced the nightmare that had devoured a demon lord without flinching, without granite shields, without arrows, and without swords.

"Phantsin, look at me!" the girl cried, channeling all her inexperienced magic into the Aethelwyrd. "It's me! It's Flower!"

The emerald crystal erupted in a blinding radiance. A wave of pure, vibrant green creation magic clashed against the armor's frigid, purple aura. They were two primordial forces colliding: absolute creation against devouring entropy.

[LIFE SOURCE DETECTED. INITIATING EXTRACTION]

The black aura lashed out like tentacles, latching onto the light. The Aegis began to violently drain the staff's energy.

Flower fell to her knees, letting out a cry of pain as she felt the Void's chill crawl up the wood, trying to tear her very soul out through the magical bond.

"You're not alone!"

Lyla Moonshadow broke the evacuation line and sprinted into the center of the two-toned maelstrom, dropping to her knees beside Flower. Without hesitation, she placed both her hands over the girl's, gripping the staff's Silverwood together.

Lyla injected all her mastery of Terra magic, her doctrine of Resilience, all the indomitable life of the Silvanyan forests, straight into Flower's magic. The green light abruptly stabilized, growing dense and solid. Together they wove a wall of glowing mana leaves and thick ethereal vines that physically pushed the purple darkness back, wrestling against the void tentacles.

"Remember who you are, Phantsin!" Lyla screamed, tears streaming down her emerald-lit face. "You are not this armor! You are the boy who breathed with me in The Grove! Come back!"

Deep within the mental abyss of Phantsin, where he floated in a cold, numb apathy surrounded by purple code and whispers of annihilation, a green flash tore through the darkness. It smelled of pine. It smelled of jasmine. He felt the despair, but also the unconditional love and unwavering purity of his sister.

The anchor of his humanity began to pull taut. But the Aegis was stubborn, tightening its cybernetic and magical grip, clinging to his flesh with iron claws.

Suddenly, a swift gray blur slipped through the storm of warring magic.

Rikka ignored the suffocating pressure of the Void. Using her natural affinity with Umbra magic, she executed a perfect "Blitz," dodging the erratic lashes of energy and leaping directly onto the Infernal Knight.

The wolf didn't use offensive magic, nor did she try to stab him; she used the pure, brutal connection of instinct. She climbed the burning carapace, ignoring how the metal seared her thighs, and her bandaged, bleeding hands grabbed directly onto the helm's obsidian horns.

"Alpha!" Rikka howled inches from the metallic face, her golden eyes blazing with an untamed fierceness that cut straight through the system's static. "The pack calls you! If you stay in there, I'll go in and bite you until I drag you out! WAKE UP!"

The three forces slammed simultaneously into Phantsin's assimilated mind: Flower's light of pure creation purifying him, Lyla's vital, earthly anchor reminding him of who he was, and Rikka's wild, unyielding, and roaring loyalty.

Phantsin's crushed humanity clung to those three beacons with a strength born of sheer desperation.

He remembered Eliana's broken body, the princess's shattered smile as she fell. He hadn't sacrificed everything, hadn't broken himself into pieces and surrendered to the darkness, only to end up becoming the executioner of the people he loved most in the world.

With a roar of pure human will—a guttural scream that echoed from inside the helm and drowned out the magical clamor—Phantsin Dawnfire rebelled against the parasite.

[ERROR! CRITICAL ERROR!]

[MASSIVE HOST REJECTION]

[SYSTEM OVERRIDE: CANCELED DUE TO EMOTIONAL ANOMALY]

[RETRACTING... RETRACTING...]

The purple light of the visors flickered wildly and erupted in a metallic shriek of feedback.

The armor collapsed all at once. The thick obsidian plates splintered and sank painfully beneath his skin, tearing flesh and leaving deep, dark scars as the symbiote hid itself within his blood. The demonic helm dissolved into black smoke that the wind quickly scattered.

Phantsin slumped forward, losing all rigidity, reverting to nothing more than a bruised, burned, pale, and blood-soaked human.

Rikka caught him mid-air before his face could hit the granite. The wolf dropped to her knees, dragged down by his weight, but she hugged him tightly against her chest, burying her face in his sweaty crimson hair, growling protectively.

The Greenheart's light softly faded, returning the night to the courtyard. Flower and Lyla collapsed exhaustedly onto the cobblestones, breathing heavily, their hands trembling.

They were still alive. The connection had been severed. The overwhelming pressure of the darkness had dissipated.

The team rushed toward the center of the crater.

Zephyr folded his wings, dropping to his knees beside Phantsin.

Korbin arrived in heavy strides and dropped his massive hammer, relief washing over his weathered face.

Vlad, clutching his ribs from the earlier blow, sheathed his shadow rapier and looked down at his eternal rival unconscious in the wolf's arms, with a profound new respect.

Ellie limped to her feet, rushed over to Flower, and hugged her tightly, sobbing in pure gratitude.

Squad Seven, alongside their most loyal allies, had reunited at the epicenter of the disaster.

They were bruised, broken, and surrounded by destruction and demon corpses. But as they looked up, they saw that the massive Rift in the sky—without the dark influence of Grimshaw's tower and without the unleashed power of the Abyssal Spawn to anchor it—was slowly beginning to close, devouring itself in a whirlpool of violet sparks.

Phantsin coughed weakly, spitting up a clot of dark blood, and half-opened one crimson eye. He was surrounded by the blurry faces of his pack. His left hand trembled, searching blindly in the scorched dust.

"Eliana..." he whispered, his voice a thread that barely brushed the air, remembering the blue dome and the sacrifice of the perfect shield. "Where is... she?"

Lyla, despite her own extreme magical exhaustion, leaned on Flower's staff and staggered to her feet. She looked toward the stairs of the Great Hall.

A few meters away, an emergency medical team from the Terra faction, led by Magister Selena herself, had secured the perimeter.

They were levitating the pale, broken, and inert body of Eliana Dawnshield on a stretcher hastily woven from thick, glowing restorative roots.

"She's alive, Phantsin. Her heart is still beating," Lyla said, though her voice trembled, betraying the extreme gravity of the noble princess's injuries. "They are taking her to the high-security emergency ward."

Phantsin let out a long, shuddering sigh. He let his head fall heavily against Rikka's chest, finally closing his eyes as silent tears washed the traces of soot and blood from his face.
