Chapter 28 - CHAPTER 28: THE SHIELD'S SACRIFICE

The Rift Lord, an Abyssal Spawn composed of molten obsidian and amalgamated corpses, towered within the central courtyard. Its eyeless jaw unhinged, unleashing a roar of overlapping, multitudinous voices that rattled the Academy's foundations and choked the air with the stench of rotting flesh and ozone.

The monstrosity turned its massive bulk toward the brightest source of light: the vine dome where Flower, Ellie, Lyla, and Rikka had taken refuge behind the exhausted defensive line.

Inside the dome, Lyla Moonshadow kept her palms pressed flat against the earth, desperately injecting her Terra magic to thicken the roots, but the demon's aura of entropy withered the flora almost instantly. Rikka, her pupils blown wide, crossed her daggers in front of Flower, ready to unleash a final, suicidal "Blitz" straight into the monster's invisible eyes. Ellie traced frost runes in the air, preparing her most lethal magic for a futile defense.

The Spawn raised an arm the size of a carriage, ready to crush the fragile dome and devour the Green Heart.

Then, a streak of purple and black fire tore across the courtyard at supersonic speed.

Phantsin Dawnfire slammed into the demon's chest with the kinetic force of a full siege ram. The collision generated a sonic shockwave that shattered the few remaining intact windows of the Great Hall, raining glittering glass over the battlefield.

[WARNING: CRITICAL CORE TEMPERATURE]

The Spawn stumbled backward, snarling in pain as the overloaded Ignis fire melted through a portion of its obsidian carapace. The air was instantly flooded with the suffocating reek of burning sulfur and melting tar.

Phantsin didn't stop; he channeled his Overwhelming Force to the absolute limit.

He landed a rising uppercut imbued with purple flames that splintered the monster's lower jaw, sending chunks of obsidian bursting outward like thick glass. Before the beast could react, Phantsin pivoted on his axis and drove a brutal elbow strike directly into the center of its fractured chest, caving in the armor plating and boiling the amalgamation of corpses within. Black blood splattered, evaporating with a shrill hiss upon touching his incandescent armor.

But the Demon was not like the hounds. It felt no fear.

With a blind yet devastating sweep of its free arm, it swatted Phantsin in mid-air, hurling him like a skipped stone against the steps of the main building.

Phantsin bounced off the stone, cracking the granite, but sprang to his feet instantly, spitting blood inside his helmet. He felt the pain mounting. His muscles were tearing from the inside out with every movement, as if a thousand white-hot blades were coursing through his veins.

"You will not... touch them!" Phantsin roared.

He invoked all the remaining mana in his fire core, compressing it into his legs, and launched himself in a vertical leap, aiming straight for the Spawn's head.

Wreathing his fist in a blinding purple aura, he connected squarely with the beast's face, tearing away a massive chunk of stone and shadow in a thermal explosion.

The blow was devastating, but the Spawn did not fall. The sheer entropic mass absorbed the damage, and the creature only grew further enraged, its body pulsing with a violent violet glow.

[EMERGENCY PROTOCOL 1: TERMINATED]

[CONSEQUENCE: CELLULAR COLLAPSE ENGAGED]

[SYSTEM SHUTDOWN]

Phantsin's fire extinguished in mid-air like a candle snuffed out by a hurricane.

His muscles locked in absolute, agonizing cramps. The lights of his visor died. The Aegis, bereft of its overload energy and with its systems inactive, shifted from being a second skin to a dead metal prison.

Phantsin plummeted from the sky like a lead weight, crashing against the courtyard's cobblestones with a sickening crunch that echoed in the sudden silence.

He couldn't move. He couldn't breathe. Through the cracked visor of his helmet, with one eye forced open, he watched the Abyssal Titan regain its footing, fixing its attention on him—the minuscule human who had dared to defy it.

The monster raised both fists high into the air, interlacing its fingers of molten stone to form an obsidian hammer the size of a small house. Its intent was obvious: to crush him into an unrecognizable paste against the ground.

Phantsin tried to force his body to move.

Get up. Get up.

But his biology was already shattered. The commands from his brain died before they could reach his limbs. It was only a matter of time before the hammer fell.

He closed his eyes, awaiting the final impact that would end it all.

But the impact never reached his body.

A pure, geometric, and perfectly structured sapphire-blue light erupted over him, dispelling the shadows.

Eliana Dawnshield had slipped between Phantsin and the Demon with the flawless speed and grace of a master duelist. The princess of Aether planted her boots firmly on the splintered stone and aimed her longsword directly upward at the descending hammer. She channeled one hundred percent of her vital mana, bolstered by a warm flare of Holy Magic within her to steel her own resolve.

Precision. Control. Sacrifice.

A hemispherical dome of sapphire-blue energy materialized, thick as the armored glass of a vault, shielding them both. An absolute defense.

The Spawn's massive obsidian hammer fell.

For an instant, time seemed to slow down. In the exact millisecond the dark mass struck the magical barrier, the air around the point of impact warped drastically into concentric ripples. An ear-piercing whine—the sound of pure Aether magic resisting physical annihilation—clogged the ears of everyone present in the courtyard. The gravitational pressure crushed the ambient dust against the ground.

And then...

CRAAAAAACK!

The sound was a deafening thunderclap that made the nearby cadets' ears bleed. The granite floor around the dome's perimeter sank half a meter, yielding to the transferred kinetic force, but Eliana's barrier withstood the initial impact.

"I won't... let you die, Dawnfire!" Eliana screamed through gritted teeth. Blood began to pour from her nose and the corners of her eyes, a result of the monstrous magical pressure.

Phantsin opened his eyes, horrified to see the small figure placing herself between him and death.

"Eliana, no! Run! It's too strong!"

But she didn't budge. Her swordsman's stance was unyielding. She was the descendant of the Heroine. She was her squad's shield, the protector of Arcanum Bellator.

The Abyssal Spawn roared in frustration and injected pure entropic magic into its fists, forcing the entirety of its tonnage against the dome, attempting to drill through the magic with pure darkness.

The sapphire blue began to flicker erratically. Glowing, web-like cracks spread at lightning speed across the outer surface of the magical shield.

Eliana let out a bloodcurdling shriek of agony. The shield was directly tethered to her mana core and neural network. The girl's left arm—the very same one she had broken years ago in the Geode dungeon to protect Phantsin—began to crack audibly beneath the feedback of the demon's brute force, the bones splintering from the inside.

"ELIANA!" Rikka screamed from afar. The wolf-girl lunged forward, ready to intervene, but Lyla grabbed her around the waist with both hands, anchoring her feet into the dirt. She knew with agonizing certainty that entering that pressure zone meant instant obliteration.

The shield could endure no more.

The Aether dome shattered with the sound of a million mirrors breaking in unison. The rupture of so much condensed magic triggered a massive arcane explosion, a hurricane of blue kinetic force.

The shockwave of the detonation blasted the Spawn's fists, amputating portions of its stone fingers and violently knocking it backward. But the physical backlash for the cadets was fatal.

Phantsin and Eliana were thrown like weightless ragdolls. They flew through the air and tumbled violently across the scorched cobblestones, bouncing until they slammed heavily against the base of a broken statue at the far end of the courtyard.

Thick gray dust blanketed the area. Time seemed to stand still.

The cellular collapse paralyzing Phantsin was ignored for a brief, miraculous instant, overridden by a surge of pure adrenaline at the sight of the inert body beside him.

"Eliana... Eliana, please..." Phantsin groaned, his voice broken by the metal and the panic.

Using only his arms, he dragged his armored, useless body across the ground until he reached her.

The blonde girl lay on her back, pale as a marble ghost beneath the dust of battle. Her black jacket was in tatters. Her left arm was completely pulverized; the bones had given way under the pressure, warping the limb entirely, and blood flowed at a terrifying rate, pooling darkly beneath her. Her breathing was shallow—a wet, agonizing wheeze that barely lifted her chest.

Phantsin removed his broken helmet with trembling hands, letting it drop to the floor with a dull thud. His crimson eyes brimmed with burning tears.

Eliana opened one eye, the sapphire blue of her iris clouded by the haze of impending death. She coughed, and a thick trail of blood slid down her chin.

"I told you..." she whispered, offering a broken, pained smile that cost her every ounce of strength she had left in the world. "I am... a shield... Dawnfire."

Her head lolled softly to the side. She slipped completely into unconsciousness, her pulse weakening by the second, slipping through the fingers of life.

She had saved him. Again. The princess of order, the brilliant strategist, had broken herself into a thousand pieces to protect the stray dog.

Phantsin remained beside her. He looked down at his own hands, bloodied and covered in purple metallic scales.

His humanity was not enough. His willpower, his moral filters, his stupid rules about never hurting anyone... all of it had only resulted in the strongest, most loyal, and bravest girl he knew bleeding out on the cold ground because of him.

Human weakness was a luxury he could no longer afford.

He slowly looked forward. Through the cloud of dust, the Abyssal Spawn was recovering from the shield's blast. It growled, reconstructing its obsidian fists, and began to advance toward them once more, step by heavy step.

Phantsin Dawnfire made an irreversible decision.

He closed his eyes and reached out to the darkness lurking in the deepest edges of his mind. To the parasite that Magister Grimshaw had fed with such suspicion. To the bottomless hunger of the Void that waited patiently for his surrender.

Take control, Phantsin thought, and his inner voice did not tremble. Devour my fire. Devour my humanity. Take it all. Just kill it.

Phantsin lowered his mental defenses completely. He tore down the wall. He shattered the final lock of light that separated his soul from the Aegis.

He surrendered entirely to the Void.

The broken helmet on the ground melted, disintegrating into liquid shadows. It slithered up his leg like serpents of black smoke, fusing back with the armor.

The HUD in his mind, which had been powered down, flared to life abruptly. It didn't glow with a warning blue, nor a damage red, not even the pure white of the standard system. It booted up in absolute blackness that seemed to absorb the light of his own mind, displaying neon purple lettering that looked like dripping acidic poison.

[WELCOME, HELL KNIGHT]

A pillar of pure energy—as dark as the deep space between stars and as cold as the void of death—erupted from Phantsin's body. It pierced the heavens with a silent roar, rising until it touched the dimensional Rift itself.

The armor mutated violently. The hexagonal purple plating grew sharper, thicker, and more intricate, fusing completely with his underlying bones. A crown of jagged obsidian horns sprouted from the new, faceless helmet. There was no light in the visor; instead, two empty pits opened, devouring the hope of anyone who dared look into them. The purple fire that had wreathed him before was replaced by an aura of dense shadows—a freezing black fire that withered stone and froze the moisture in its path.

Phantsin stood up. His body no longer creaked with pain.

But the being inhabiting that armor was no longer Phantsin.

The Abyssal Spawn stopped dead in its tracks. For the first time since it had plummeted from the sky, the amalgamated monster let out a guttural growl of genuine doubt and took a half-step back. Its primal instinct warned it that it was in the presence of an Apex Predator.

The Hell Knight tilted its head with unnatural, mechanical movements. Its body began to emanate a killing intent so dense and physical that Lyla, Ellie, and Rikka fell to their knees in the distance, suffocating, unable to breathe under the crushing weight of that darkness.

No battle cry. No proclamations of honor. No brilliant fire of Ignis.

The Hell Knight took a single step forward, and the granite floor of Arcanum Bellator seemed to groan and sink beneath its boots.
