Chapter 31 - CHAPTER 31: THE DAWNBLADE

The Great Crucible bore no silks or festive banners that morning. The stands sat empty, devoid of nobles and civilians. The arena still held the craters and dark stains where demon blood had boiled the stone.

It was a solemn, urgent, and strictly military ceremony.

Headmaster Therion Krane stood on the dais, his magitech arm gleaming under the gray sky. Before him, a dozen third-year cadets formed a perfect line. Among them, shoulder to shoulder, stood the two prodigies of the Ignis faction.

Phantsin Dawnfire and Vlad Blackthorn wore black full-dress military uniforms, devoid of any student adornments.

"The traditional Rite of Bellator demands that cadets descend into the depths of the Geode Dungeon to prove their worth," Krane's harsh voice intoned, echoing across the empty arena. "You did not descend. The abyss came to us. And you held your ground."

Krane stepped down from the dais, holding an oak box inlaid with silver emblems. He walked down the line of cadets.

"For your valor in the Rift War, Arcanum Bellator recognizes you. As of today, you are no longer cadets. You are the sword and shield of Aethoria. You are Mage Knights."

Krane stopped in front of Vlad. He pinned a silver emblem—a sword wreathed in flames—to his lapel.

"Knight Blackthorn. You will be deployed to the western vanguard. May your spectral fire never extinguish."

"For the honor of Ignis, Headmaster," Vlad replied, striking his chest with a closed fist.

Krane took a step to the side and stood before Phantsin. The Headmaster looked him in the eye. He pinned the silver emblem on him, but beneath it, he added a second brooch: a rising sun crossed by a sword. The seal of Master Seamo's private military order.

"Knight Dawnfire," Krane said in a low voice, meant only for him to hear. "You are joining the Dawnblades. You will leave for Xul'gath at dawn. You are the most lethal weapon this Academy has forged in a century. Make sure you aim at the right monsters."

"I will, sir," Phantsin replied, his voice unwavering.

The ceremony ended. The students broke rank, heading to the barracks to gather their gear.

Zephyr and Korbin had already departed at dawn. The avariel and the dwarf, now fully-fledged Mage Knights as well, had been assigned to joint regiments heading out to fortify the borders. They had said their goodbyes to Phantsin in the barracks with rib-crushing hugs and promises to drink dwarven ale when it was all over.

Phantsin made his way to the entrance courtyard, where cleanup crews were still clearing away rubble.

The rest of his squad was waiting for him there.

Eliana Dawnshield stood by the Founders' Fountain. She wore civilian clothes: an elegant navy blue dress of noble cut. Her left arm rested in a black silk sling.

Phantsin stopped in front of her. He looked at the useless arm. Flower's pure magic had saved her from amputation and death, but the damage to the nerves and arcane muscles was irreversible.

"I'm so sorry, Eliana," Phantsin murmured, guilt bleeding into his voice. "If I had been faster..."

"Enough, Dawnfire," she cut him off with her usual reprimanding tone, though there was an unprecedented softness in her sapphire eyes. "I made the choice to raise that shield. Saving your life is the most tactical and strategic act I've done in this Academy. Look at you. You are a Mage Knight now."

Eliana used her healthy right hand to adjust the Dawnblades emblem on Phantsin's lapel—a gesture of Precision and Control, as always.

"I won't be deployed, Phantsin. I can't wield a longsword. But my aunt, the Queen, has summoned me to the capital." Eliana's eyes hardened with steely determination. "The Church of Mortanis and the corrupt nobles will try to use the fear of the Rift to seize control. I will be the Crown's shield in court. I will fight my battles with words and laws to ensure that you, on the Xul'gath border, do not lack for supplies or reinforcements."

"Give them a political hell, princess," Phantsin smiled, offering her his hand.

Eliana took it with a firm grip.

"Survive, stray. That's an order."

Eliana stepped aside, making room for Lyla Moonshadow.

The Terra elf wore her green uniform, its skirt hems stained with dirt. She looked exhausted but radiant. The deep connection she had forged with Flower to bring Phantsin back had changed her; her life magic felt denser, more mature.

"The elders of Silvanya sent me a message. They wanted me to return to the sacred forest after the attack," Lyla said, looking him in the eyes.

"Are you leaving?" Phantsin felt a pang of emptiness in his chest.

Lyla shook her head, her silver hair swaying gently.

"I told them no. My place is here. Arcanum Bellator has a lot of scorched earth and corrupted magic that needs healing. Besides... I promised someone I would take care of his little sister when she entered the Academy next year. Flower will need an instructor who understands the weight of Creation magic."

Phantsin felt a knot of gratitude tighten in his throat.

"Lyla... I don't know how to repay you for everything you've done for me. For us. You are... you're the anchor that kept me human."

Lyla closed the distance between them, and her hands, warm and smelling of jasmine and damp earth, rested on Phantsin's cold black uniform. She stood on her tiptoes and pressed her lips softly against his cheek.

The kiss lasted only a couple of seconds, but it was enough for the Aegis beneath Phantsin's skin to purr—not with abyssal hunger, but pacified by the overwhelming purity of the contact.

"Just make sure you come back to pay off that debt, Knight Dawnfire," Lyla whispered near his ear.

Phantsin nodded, unable to say another word for fear his voice would break.

He turned and walked toward the main gates of the Academy. There, a black carriage bearing the crest of House Seamo awaited him.

Leaning against the carriage door, arms crossed and nervously toying with the hilt of one of her daggers, was Rikka. The wolf-girl wore dark leather garments from the slums. When Phantsin approached, her ears perked up.

"The pack says its goodbyes," Rikka commented, sniffing the trail of Terra and Aether magic he carried with him.

"We all have our own trenches now, Rikka," Phantsin said, stopping in front of the carriage door. He looked at her intently. "Are you ready for your mission?"

The Umbra girl's golden eyes shone with fierce loyalty, remembering the promise she had made him in the dormitories: to become Flower Dawnfire's absolute shadow.

"The pup will be safe. My fangs are sharp, Alpha. No one will get near her without losing their throat first."

"I hope so."

Phantsin gave her a firm pat on the shoulder, recognizing her not as a pet or a broken student, but as his equal, the guardian of his most precious treasure.

Phantsin climbed into the carriage. Rikka closed the door from the outside and nimbly leapt onto the driver's box, taking a seat beside the coachman. The wolf-girl would escort him on this final leg through the city.

The whip cracked. The carriage jolted into motion.

Through the small window, Phantsin Dawnfire watched the remaining imposing spire towers of Arcanum Bellator pulling away into the distance.

He had arrived at the Academy as a frightened commoner, hiding a fire that threatened to consume him. Now, he was leaving as the Hell Knight, the Dawnblade, forged in magic, blood, and the will to protect his own.

The carriage rolled down the cobblestone streets toward Seamo Manor. It was his final stop. He had to say goodbye to Flower and prepare himself for the frozen hell of Xul'gath. The First War was over, but the true campaign of the Purple Knight was only just beginning.
