Chapter 99 - Chapter 99: A Lie That Learns to Breathe

The mansion stood too still.

Not peaceful.

Just… contained.

Like the air inside had forgotten how to move.

Kevin stopped at the gate.

"…This place feels different."

Tashigi adjusted her glasses.

"…Medical presence detected."

Nami stepped forward slightly.

"…Kaya is inside."

Carina tilted her head.

"…Why does 'inside' sound emotionally expensive?"

Kuina didn't respond.

But her hand rested near her sword.

Not because of danger.

Because of habit.

Kevin looked at the mansion again.

"…We proceed normally."

Carina blinked.

"…We don't do that."

They entered.

The garden was quiet.

Too clean.

Too controlled.

And then—

a voice.

"…H-HOLD IT RIGHT THERE!"

A boy jumped out from behind a hedge.

Too fast.

Too dramatic.

Too unprepared.

Usopp.

Again.

Carina sighed immediately.

"…He's back. Emotionally consistent."

Usopp pointed with both hands now.

"…THIS IS PRIVATE PROPERTY! I, CAPTAIN USOPP, WILL NOT LET YOU TAKE ONE STEP FURTHER!"

Silence.

Kuina looked at him.

"…You already failed this once."

Usopp froze.

"…I—I was testing your reaction speed!"

Tashigi blinked.

"…That is not a valid tactical statement."

Kevin stepped forward slightly.

Not threatening.

Just present.

Usopp immediately backed up.

"…D-Don't move like that! That's illegal intimidation!"

Carina leaned toward Nami.

"…He's like fear but louder."

Nami sighed softly.

"…He means well."

Usopp paused.

Then nodded quickly.

"…YES! EXACTLY! I MEAN WELL!"

A beat.

Kevin spoke calmly.

"…We are not here for conflict."

Usopp blinked.

"…You're not pirates invading the mansion?"

Carina raised a hand.

"…Technically we are pirates but emotionally we're booked and busy."

Usopp processed that.

Failed.

Processed again.

Failed harder.

"…That doesn't help!"

Nami stepped forward.

"…We're here for Kaya."

That name changed the air slightly.

Usopp straightened.

"…You… know her?"

Nami nodded.

"…I do."

Usopp hesitated.

Then slowly lowered his arms.

"…Then… you're not bad people…"

Carina pointed.

"…We've been saying that for a while, thank you."

He reluctantly stepped aside.

"…She's inside… but she's sick."

Kevin's gaze sharpened slightly.

"…Illness?"

Usopp nodded.

"…Yeah… she's been weak for a long time."

A pause.

"…But she's really kind."

Nami looked toward the mansion.

Softly:

"…She always was."

Inside.

The mansion was quiet.

Warm.

But fragile.

And there—

on a bed near the window—

Kaya.

She looked smaller than expected.

Not weak in spirit.

But in body.

Tashigi slowed slightly.

"…Condition is chronic."

Carina whispered.

"…Okay yeah this is sad immediately."

Kuina stayed silent.

But her expression softened slightly.

Kevin stepped closer.

Watching her carefully.

Nami moved first.

"…Kaya."

Kaya turned her head slowly.

And smiled.

Weakly.

But real.

"…Nami…"

A pause.

"…You came back."

Nami nodded.

"…Yeah."

Silence.

Not awkward.

Just long.

Carina stood awkwardly in the background.

"…I feel like we shouldn't be here but also we're already here so—"

Usopp peeked in from the doorway.

"…SHE SMILED! SEE? I TOLD YOU SHE SMILES!"

Carina sighed.

"…He is emotionally narrating reality."

Kaya's eyes shifted to the others.

Curious.

Gentle.

"…Friends of Nami?"

Nami hesitated.

Then nodded.

"…Yes."

Carina waved immediately.

"…Hi, I'm Carina, I specialize in chaos management."

Kuina gave a small nod.

"…Kuina."

Tashigi followed.

"…Tashigi."

Kevin paused slightly.

Then:

"…Kevin."

Kaya smiled faintly.

"…Thank you for coming here."

That simple sentence landed heavier than expected.

Silence followed.

Usopp scratched his head awkwardly.

"…So uh… are you all staying long?"

Carina answered instantly.

"…Depends how emotionally complicated this island becomes."

Usopp blinked.

"…That sounds like a yes?"

Kevin looked at Kaya again.

And something inside him stirred.

Not power.

Not hunger.

Not instinct.

Recognition.

Fragile life.

Quiet existence.

Still holding on.

"…She is weak," Kevin said softly.

Tashigi nodded.

"…But stable."

Nami added quietly:

"…She's always been like that."

Kevin paused.

Then:

"…It can be changed."

Everyone looked at him.

Even Kaya.

Carina squinted.

"…That sounded medically dangerous."

Kevin continued calmly.

"…Not forcefully."

A pause.

"…But life responds to balance."

Silence.

Not everyone understood him.

But no one interrupted.

Kaya smiled gently.

"…That sounds like something only you would say."

Kevin didn't answer.

But he didn't deny it either.

Outside the mansion—

a shadow watched from afar.

Unseen.

Unannounced.

Waiting.

Not yet moving.

Just observing.

And the wind shifted slightly again.

As if the island itself had remembered—

this was where the next story truly began.
