The dinner meeting replayed in Adrian Kingsley's mind long after the restaurant lights had gone dark.
He sat alone in his office, the city skyline glowing through the tall glass windows. A half-finished glass of whiskey rested on his desk, untouched.
Elena's words echoed in his head.
"You believed what you were shown."
At the time, he had brushed it off.
But now the sentence refused to leave him alone.
Adrian opened the drawer of his desk and pulled out an old file.
Inside were printed photographs.
Grainy images taken three years ago.
Elena walking into a hotel.
Elena entering a room with a man.
The same photographs that had destroyed their marriage.
He stared at them carefully.
At the time, his anger had blinded him.
But tonight… something felt different.
Something didn't add up.
His phone buzzed.
Daniel Carter's name appeared on the screen.
Adrian answered.
"What did you find?" he asked immediately.
Daniel's voice came through calmly.
"I checked the investor Elena supposedly met that night."
"And?"
"There was a meeting scheduled."
Adrian straightened in his chair.
"With who?"
Daniel hesitated.
"With Kingsley Group."
Adrian froze.
"What?"
Daniel continued.
"It was supposed to be a confidential meeting between the investor and your company."
Adrian's mind raced.
"That's impossible. I never scheduled that."
"You didn't," Daniel replied.
"But someone in your office did."
Adrian's grip tightened around the phone.
"Who?"
Daniel's voice lowered.
"The meeting request was sent through Sophia Bennett's assistant."
Silence filled the office.
Adrian slowly leaned back in his chair.
Three years ago, Sophia had been the one who brought him the photos.
Sophia had been the one who insisted Elena was cheating.
Sophia had been the one who comforted him afterward.
A cold realization began forming in his mind.
"Keep digging," Adrian said quietly.
The call ended.
Adrian stared at the photographs again.
For the first time, doubt crept into his thoughts.
What if Elena had been telling the truth?
---
Across the city, Elena Laurent sat in the living room of her penthouse apartment.
A small boy ran across the carpet holding a toy airplane.
"Mommy! Look!"
Elena smiled as Ethan lifted the toy into the air.
"It's flying!"
"That's amazing," she said warmly.
Ethan made a loud engine noise as he ran around the couch.
Lucas sat nearby, watching the scene with amusement.
"You know," he said, "for someone who terrifies billionaires, you're surprisingly soft at home."
Elena laughed quietly.
"That's because he's the only boss I listen to."
Ethan suddenly ran over and climbed onto the couch beside her.
"Mommy, are you working tomorrow?"
Elena brushed his hair gently.
"I have a meeting in the morning."
Ethan frowned slightly.
"Again?"
She smiled apologetically.
"But I'll pick you up from school."
That seemed to satisfy him.
"Okay!"
He jumped off the couch and ran back to his toy airplane.
Lucas watched Elena carefully.
"You're hiding him well."
Elena's smile faded slightly.
"I have to."
Lucas leaned forward.
"Adrian will find out eventually."
"Not yet."
"You can't keep it secret forever."
Elena didn't respond.
Instead, she watched Ethan playing happily across the room.
Her heart softened slightly.
"He deserves peace," she said quietly.
Lucas nodded.
"I agree."
"But the truth always finds its way out."
Elena knew that.
She had learned that lesson the hard way.
Just then, her phone buzzed on the table.
A notification from her assistant appeared.
Kingsley Group requested a meeting tomorrow morning.
Lucas saw the message too.
"That didn't take long."
Elena picked up the phone slowly.
"He's reacting faster than expected."
Lucas frowned.
"Are you going?"
Elena thought for a moment.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Her eyes turned toward the window overlooking the city.
"Because something has changed."
Lucas studied her carefully.
"What do you mean?"
Elena remembered the look on Adrian's face during dinner.
The confusion.
The doubt.
For the first time in three years, he didn't look certain anymore.
"That man always trusted his instincts," she said quietly.
Lucas crossed his arms.
"So?"
Elena placed the phone down.
"So if he starts asking the right questions…"
Lucas finished the thought.
"…he might discover the truth."
Elena nodded slowly.
Across the room, Ethan crashed his toy airplane into a pillow and laughed loudly.
Elena smiled again.
But deep inside her chest, unease slowly began to grow.
Because if Adrian discovered the truth about that night…
Everything would change.
Not just for her.
But for the small boy laughing across the room.
And Elena wasn't sure if she was ready for that moment yet.
