Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Child

Rain fell softly over the city that afternoon.

Inside Bright Horizons Private School, children's laughter echoed through the hallway as classes ended for the day. Parents waited near the entrance while teachers helped students gather their bags.

Ethan sat quietly at his desk, swinging his legs while finishing the last line of his drawing.

"Your mom will be here soon," his teacher said with a smile.

Ethan nodded happily.

"My mom is always on time."

A few minutes later, the classroom door opened.

Elena Laurent stepped inside.

She had changed from her office suit into a simple cream blouse and dark trousers, but her confident presence still turned heads.

The teacher greeted her warmly.

"Good afternoon, Miss Laurent."

"Good afternoon," Elena replied politely.

Ethan immediately jumped from his chair.

"Mom!"

He ran across the room and hugged her tightly.

Elena bent down and wrapped her arms around him, her expression softening instantly.

"How was school today?" she asked.

"I drew airplanes!"

He held up the paper proudly.

Elena smiled as she looked at it.

"That's amazing."

The teacher chuckled.

"He's very talented."

Ethan beamed.

Elena thanked the teacher before taking Ethan's hand and walking toward the exit.

Outside, the rain had slowed to a light drizzle.

"Mom," Ethan said as they walked, "can we get ice cream?"

Elena laughed softly.

"In this weather?"

"Yes!"

She pretended to think for a moment.

"Alright. One scoop."

Ethan cheered.

Across the street, a black sedan waited at a red light.

Inside the car sat Adrian Kingsley.

He had just finished a meeting nearby when his driver stopped at the intersection.

Adrian leaned back in his seat, checking messages on his phone.

But something outside the window caught his attention.

A familiar figure walking along the sidewalk.

Elena.

Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly.

What was she doing here?

His gaze followed her as she walked toward a small ice cream shop.

Then he noticed something else.

A small boy walking beside her.

The child held her hand happily, talking excitedly while she listened.

Adrian frowned.

He had never seen her with a child before.

As the traffic light remained red, he watched them more closely.

The boy looked about three years old.

Dark hair.

Bright blue eyes.

Adrian suddenly leaned forward.

Blue eyes.

For a brief moment, something strange stirred in his chest.

The boy laughed as Elena wiped a bit of ice cream from his cheek.

The gesture was natural.

Comfortable.

Like something she had done a hundred times before.

"Who is that child?" Adrian murmured.

His driver glanced at the scene briefly.

"Looks like her son, sir."

Adrian's heart skipped.

"Her son?"

The words echoed in his mind.

But that didn't make sense.

Elena had never mentioned having a child.

Not during the dinner meeting.

Not during their conversation in his office.

Adrian's eyes returned to the boy.

Something about the child felt… oddly familiar.

Then the light turned green.

The car slowly began moving again.

Adrian twisted in his seat, watching them through the rear window as they disappeared behind the street corner.

A strange unease settled in his chest.

Inside the ice cream shop, Ethan happily finished the last bite of his cone.

"Mom, can we come here again tomorrow?"

Elena laughed.

"Maybe this weekend."

Ethan seemed satisfied with that answer.

They walked outside again, the rain finally stopping.

Lucas's car pulled up to the curb.

"Hey, little boss," Lucas greeted from the driver's seat.

Ethan grinned.

"Uncle Lucas!"

He climbed into the backseat.

Elena sat in the front.

As Lucas started the car, he glanced at her.

"You look relaxed today."

Elena smiled faintly.

"Spending time with him helps."

Lucas nodded toward Ethan in the backseat.

"He's getting bigger."

"Yes."

Lucas hesitated.

"Elena… we should talk about something."

Her smile faded slightly.

"What?"

Lucas kept his eyes on the road.

"You know Adrian will eventually see him."

Elena was quiet for a moment.

Then she said softly,

"I know."

Lucas glanced at her.

"And when that happens?"

Elena looked out the window.

The city lights reflected faintly in the glass.

"When that happens," she said calmly, "we'll deal with it."

Lucas wasn't entirely convinced.

But he didn't push further.

Across the city, Adrian sat in his office later that night.

The image of Elena with the child kept replaying in his mind.

Finally, he pressed the intercom.

"Send Daniel in."

A few minutes later, Daniel Carter entered.

"You look troubled," he said.

Adrian didn't waste time.

"Find out everything you can about Elena Laurent's personal life."

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"That's broad."

"I want to know where she lived for the past three years."

Daniel nodded.

"Anything else?"

Adrian hesitated for a moment.

Then he said quietly,

"And find out if she has a child."

Daniel looked surprised.

"A child?"

"I saw her today with a little boy."

Daniel considered that.

"I'll investigate."

After Daniel left, Adrian leaned back in his chair.

His mind raced with questions.

Why had Elena never mentioned the child?

Who was the father?

And why did the boy's eyes look so strangely familiar?

Across the city, Ethan slept peacefully in his bed.

Elena sat beside him quietly, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"You'll always be safe," she promised.

But somewhere deep inside, she felt the approaching storm.

Because if Adrian Kingsley discovered the truth…

The quiet life she had built for her son would never be the same again.
