Chapter 2 - Graveyard Of Bones

She stared at the paper for a while, she moved forward and then she remembered something. If she told the truth, she would not be immune from death. Also she would not be immune from jail either and so she thought it would be best to settle this issue with a simple bargain.

"I've got an idea." She requested softly.

"What?" Clifford asked.

"Whatever I'll be writing here will lead to my death and of course if I don't die, I'll definitely be in jail. So I would like to ask for something? Immunity from death and proper protection from the remaining part of the mafia."

Clifford responded, "Listen properly Sarah Rivers Lanco. You don't make the rules here and trust me when I say this, you don't have the right to even ask for immunity from jail term or even death. You can't possibly think you'd be immune because you have access to the highest office. It doesn't work that way."

Manchester spoke from behind, "She could access it."

Clifford turned to stare at him, "Excuse me Reed? What was that?"

Reed stepped forward to him, he repeated, "I don't think you heard me correctly. Well speaking from equal ranks, you should be able to give her access to some sort of immunity for this case. It's sensitive enough for us to grant her that."

"If you do this, you risk not just your position but also your life, for what? For who?"

"Her." He said firmly.

"Her? And who is she to you? Who could she possibly be to you?"

He stayed mute.

Sarah stared at him. He stared deeply into her eyes. He said briefly, "Give it."

Clifford turned to stare at her for a while and made sure she didn't flinch anyway. She sat there waiting for their final answer.

Andrew replied, "Sarah you'll need to start writing."

"If I don't get my immunity then I'll get my lawyer right now."

They all turned to her. Did she really think she had that right to get a lawyer, she didn't but then she did by a slight chance.

Manchester walked closer to her, "Sarah? You are with the highest force currently. Your lawyers are useless here. You have the right to do as you are told or you get thrown into the cell till you feel like you've learnt your lesson. Do you understand?"

She sat silently. He continued talking? "Now you have the immunity of the team and of course the entire unit but don't play with this little privilege. You are only alive because you have something we need. Like he said earlier, start writing all you know as we grant you your sacred immunity for now."

She sat calmly. She slowly reached for her pen, crying wouldn't make anyone feel pity for her. She had to use two things, her intelligence and her ability to give them what they wanted through the act of diplomacy simply.

She wrote down all she knew.

Clifford stared at the paper. He walked out of the room with it, Andrew stood by her side and Manchester sat right in front of her. She sat there nervously at the table, a few minutes later Andrew left the office building on command.

After a while, Manchester noticed the strange silence and knew he could speak to her calmly again. "Sarah?"

She noticed a change in his tone. It was simple, softer and more enchanting compared to a few minutes past. She answered, "Yes."

"West of the city right? The graveyard for the book. The bones issue you mentioned earlier? Also the drug you had in your hand?"

"It's the south of the city."

"How can you lie twice?"

"I'm not. That's what I know and that's what I wrote down."

"Sarah? I need you to talk truly. Don't make things difficult for you. I'm free and you are not."

"Really? You are not taking my words seriously? I know the place you don't and right now I sit on this chair risking my life trying to make sure you find the other members of my family. Don't you consider that to be betrayal? I'm living and breathing by chance. So if you don't take it? You might as well just get me killed then." She concluded.

"And you think I can't do it. Get you killed? I can kill you if I want to and I'll do it without any remorse in my eyes or heart. I want you alive for a reason."

"What reason? You could end it all here. Right now."

"Do I need to darling?"

"I'm Sarah and I'm definitely not your darling, Manchester."

"So you are trying to be stubborn to me? Darling?"

"Stop it. This is not a romance franchise. It's a secret room in a government building. Don't skip that."

He smiled at her.

She stopped talking. She was kept in a place of confusion.

He smiled again. "Why are you smiling?"

"You are spicy. Why not?" He teased.

"Manchester I need to leave. I've got work."

"Leave. You are placed under arrest until Clifford says no."

"I thought you were the boss around here?"

"Me? I am. A boss of a field but I respect the other bosses of the other field. It's diplomacy at its finest."

The door opened. It was Andrew. "Sarah, you are free to go."

She stood but he blocked her path. "I'll be paying you a visit later tonight. Okay?" He touched her cheek softly.

"You don't know my house or apartment."

"Don't get cute. I watched you for eight months before attempting to arrest you. Don't underestimate my abilities of years inbuilt for force tactics." He warned softly.

She replied, "My bad." and she walked out of the room.

He smiled at her.

She walked out of the building as fast as she could. She ran out to get a cab. And she did. She gave him the address, she drove off without looking back. The man asked, "What happened? Lady you look tensed."

"Oh nothing, I nearly got my ass whooped by a couple of officers over a night party. I didn't know shit. What else?" Of course she lied. And guess what she had a fake identity card in her panties just in case cases like this arose.

"Damn. You got caught up. I've been there. I understand you." He drove off.
