Chapter 21 - Drifter Arc: Episode 4: Black Magic Preacher

[Cafe and Restaurant area, Sanji. Around 11AM]

Sanji is at the market, looking at the different local produce. "Hm... I'll take some of this." Sanji tells the merchant, pointing at the bottles of rare spice. "4000 beri." They tell him and Sanji frowns, "This is grown locally right?" he asks, "I don't need to tell an outsider where I get my merchandise. 4000." They say. Sanji's brow furrows, "I'm just asking a simple question!" he says trying to keep his cool but his outrage at the price is evident. "I could import it all the way from the west blue at that price!" he exclaims. "Then why are you here? Go to the damn west blue! Get off my island! Leave!" they retort angrily, "If the west blue has better produce then go there!" they exclaim. Sanji blinks surprised, "Fine! Be like that you damn sleazy bastard!" Sanji retorts. The enforcers come rushing at the growing commotion and restrain Sanji, "Calm down son!" one of the big enforcers holding his arms behind him says. Sanji inhales ahrply and composes himself. "I didn't do anything wrong. I was just asking where he gets his produce!" Sanji tells them. "well he has every right not to tell ya sonny." The skinnier enforcer with a mustache says. "Fine, fine! I'm sorry. I'll go." Sanji says, wriggling his arms free. He shoots one last glare at the merchant who smirks smugly and walks away before he gets provoked.

"Damn sleazy bastard!... Can't even answer a simple question.. 'outsiders!'..." Sanji mutters to himself, hands deep in his pocket and once away, leans against a wall and lights a new cigarette and blows out as he composes himself.

Nearby, a group of women pass by in church clothes, chattering eagerly as they head towards the large cathedral he saw on his way so he quickly puts his cigarette out. "The preacher's doing a big sermon today! Did you hear about it?" One of them says, "Yeah, I heard he's gonna talk about those outsiders everyone's talking about." A second one says. A third one shivers, "Have you heard? They have a skeleton AND a sea monster!" they say. Sanji's fists clench, hearing these things about his friends. As he does he then sees a poster on the other side of the alley advertising for cooks for the church kitchens. Suddenly, an idea hits him and he straightens confidently, "If I show how nice we are, then maybe he'll say nice things about how good we are and make these people less hostile toward us!" he says confidently, heading in the same direction now.

[30 minutes later, the cathedral]

Sanji enters with a determined look but freezes as he enters the grand cathedral. The cathedral is beautiful yet cold, with beautifully carved dark oak benches in contrast with the impossibly tall white columns resembling willows but of white stone with windows depicting heroes and also false windows that allow light hit the stand in all the right ways and polished white floors that you can see your reflection in. Sanji's jaw drops in awe as he looks around. After a bit more gawking, he snaps out of it and goes and offers his services to the head deacon. They most happily let him and show him to the kitchens.

After a bit, while Sanji is cooking contentedly with a smile, the head deacon approaches him, "Newcomer! Stop and come! the sermon is about to start!" they tell him. Sanji lowers his cooking utensils with a nod, and follows.

Sanji takes a seat in the second row, next to the deacon. Other people around them discuss in excited whispers about the upcoming sermon. "Did you hear, he's gonna talk about those outsiders!" a woman whispers. "Yeah, this gonna be good!" the man whispers back. Sanji's fists clench hearing it but he stays quiet.

Suddenly the heavy dark oak doors swing open and the cathedral falls silent, the only sound being the echo of footsteps. Sanji glances and sees him. The preacher is tall, with pristine white robes that reach his feet, short dark greyish hair, round spectacles and aura that made him seem almost... divine. The preacher's footsteps echo on the white floors, booming in the silent hall. When he reaches the stand there's a moment of silence then everybody stands, including Sanji and the pretty ladies he had seen earlier begin singing.

At the end of the songs, the preacher gestures to sit and everyone sits and silence returns momentarily. "People of Boot Town!" The preacher says opening his arms wide addressing them. "Today, I speak not the praises of our Lord." He declares dramatically, "A darkness has befallen us! They claim to be travelers, they rest at our inn, however they do not bring goodness. They are Pirates!" He exclaims. The crowd gasps but he continues "They bring chaos and death to our town!" he says dramatically. "I do not say this lightly, I am a preacher, I am one to always seek the light, however they mock Him and his glorious creations with creatures with metal where the heart should be, ones of bones that refuse to rest at the grave, a half man abomination disguised as a child and even have a monster of the depths!" He exclaims and the crowd gasps, The people look everything from anger to terror to horror and disgust. The preacher looks among them and his eyes land on Sanji. Sanji is gripping the bench, shocked and enraged but restraining himself. "You!" The preacher says pointing at him. "You snake of a man dare enter this sacred hall of peace and love with your salt and spices and cook for us while wearing a mask of false chivalry! With eyes like those, so full of lust and sin hidden underneath 'gentleness'? How dare you!" He says. "You even dare to tempt us, the pure, with the sin of gluttony and tempt them with pleasures of the tongue! How dare you put such filth on my table!" He shouts. All eyes are on this and Sanji can see the hate and fear and disgust aimed at him. The preacher straightens, resuming at a normal voice, trembling with anger and disgust, "How DARE you stand in the light while being a shadow of the hell that you bring." he says, "Leave this sanctuary at once! Spread the word to your other filth!" He shouts. Sanji shakily stands, eyes dark. "Leave this town you scum!" The preacher shouts, voice deep and powerful, eyes filled with hate and disgust. Sanji's shoulders slumber and he walks out with the people jeering and booing and shouting for him to leave.

[10 minutes later]

Sanji stands outside, eyes dark. His fists clench in anger at the unfairness. He lets out exhales shakily, unable to say anything. "I should go to the inn." he says and stands up. He straightens his tie and walks back toward the inn silently.
