Chapter 37 - The thread that reaches

The forest blurred past them.

Kai didn't slow down.

Didn't think.

Didn't breathe properly.

All he could feel was her.

Faint.

Distant.

But still there.

A thread.

Thin—

But unbroken.

"I can feel her," he said under his breath.

Leo glanced at him while keeping pace. "Are you sure that's her… or that thing?"

Kai didn't answer.

Because he knew the difference.

And this?

This was Nancy.

Weak.

Fading.

But still fighting.

Inside — The Call

Darkness pressed in on her from every side.

Heavier now.

Closer.

Nancy could barely move.

Barely think.

The entity's presence lingered just beyond her, watching… waiting.

"You're getting tired," it said softly.

Nancy didn't respond.

Didn't have the strength.

"Let go," it continued. "It will stop hurting."

Her fingers twitched weakly.

"No…"

The word barely existed.

Then—

Something cut through the darkness.

A voice.

Distant.

Familiar.

"…Nancy…"

Her breath caught.

Her head lifted slowly.

"…Kai?"

The darkness trembled slightly.

The entity went still.

"Interesting," it murmured.

Outside — The Bridge

Kai stopped suddenly.

Leo almost ran into him. "What—?"

"She can hear me."

Silence.

Evan frowned. "You're guessing."

Kai shook his head.

"No."

His voice steadier now.

Certain.

"I'm not."

The Alpha stepped closer, watching him carefully.

"Say her name again."

Kai didn't hesitate.

"Nancy."

Inside — The Crack Widens

This time—

It hit harder.

Clearer.

Stronger.

Nancy gasped.

"I hear you…"

The darkness around her flickered.

Not breaking—

But reacting.

The entity's expression darkened slightly.

"You're reaching too far," it said coldly.

Nancy ignored it.

"Kai… I'm here…"

Her voice echoed weakly—but it was real.

Outside—

Kai's chest tightened.

"She's alive."

Leo exhaled sharply. "We know she's alive—"

"No," Kai snapped.

"I mean she's still her."

That changed everything.

The Truth — The Only Way

The Alpha's expression hardened.

Then he spoke—

Quick.

Precise.

Because now time mattered.

"There's only one way to separate them."

All of them stilled.

Evan's voice dropped. "Say it."

The Alpha didn't soften it.

Didn't hesitate.

"You don't remove the entity."

A beat.

"You force Nancy to reject it."

Silence.

Leo frowned. "That's what she's been doing—"

"No," the Alpha cut in.

"She's resisting."

A pause.

"That's not the same thing."

Kai's eyes narrowed slightly. "…explain."

The Alpha looked directly at him.

"She's fighting it like it's external."

"But it's not."

Those words landed heavy.

Because they already knew that part.

"You said it yourself," Kai muttered. "It's part of her."

"Yes."

The Alpha stepped closer.

"And that's exactly why she can't just push it away."

Evan's voice tightened. "Then what does she do?"

A beat.

The answer came quiet—

But devastating.

"She has to face it."

Leo's jaw clenched. "She's already doing that."

The Alpha shook his head.

"No."

"She has to accept that it exists…"

His gaze sharpened.

"…without letting it define her."

Kai went still.

Because that?

That was different.

That wasn't a fight.

That was—

Control.

Inside — The Choice

Nancy's breathing steadied slightly.

Kai's voice still echoed faintly around her.

Anchoring her.

Holding her together.

The entity watched her carefully now.

"You're holding on," it said.

Nancy swallowed.

"…I'm not alone."

A pause.

Then the entity stepped closer.

Not attacking this time.

Not forcing.

Just… present.

"And that changes nothing," it replied.

Nancy shook her head slowly.

"It changes everything."

The entity tilted its head.

"Then prove it."

The darkness around them shifted again—

But this time—

It didn't close in.

It opened.

A space formed between them.

A confrontation.

Clear.

Direct.

No running.

No hiding.

Nancy pushed herself to her feet.

Weak.

Shaking.

But standing.

"I'm not getting rid of you," she said.

Outside—

The Alpha's eyes sharpened instantly.

"…that's it."

Kai frowned. "What?"

"She's starting to understand."

Inside — The Line

The entity's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Careful," it warned.

"You don't know what you're saying."

Nancy took a step forward.

Slow.

Deliberate.

"I do."

Her voice steadier now.

"You're part of me."

The darkness reacted violently—

But didn't attack.

Didn't consume.

It hesitated.

"You feel everything I feel," she continued.

"And I feel everything you do."

A pause.

"That doesn't make you me."

The entity went still.

Something shifted.

Subtle—

But real.

Nancy's chest rose slowly.

Controlled.

"I'm not your vessel."

A step closer.

"I'm your limit."

Silence.

Heavy.

Then—

For the first time—

The entity didn't smile.

Outside — The Shift

A pulse hit the forest.

But this time—

It wasn't destructive.

It was… controlled.

The wind slowed.

The pressure eased.

Leo blinked. "…wait."

Evan looked around. "Did it just—?"

Kai's voice was quiet.

"…she's pushing back."

The Alpha didn't look surprised.

But there was something else now.

Respect.

"She's not losing anymore," he said.

A pause.

"She's learning."

Yeah…
