Chapter 36 - The hunt begins

She didn't run.

She disappeared.

One second she stood there—calm, controlled, terrifying—

The next—

The space around her folded.

A violent ripple tore through the forest, bending light, distorting air—

And then she was gone.

Silence crashed down.

Kai's heart dropped instantly.

"No."

He turned sharply, scanning the trees like he could force her to reappear.

"Where did she go?!"

Evan exhaled hard. "That wasn't speed… that was something else."

Leo's voice was tight. "She didn't just leave—she shifted."

All eyes turned to the Alpha.

Because if anyone knew—

It was him.

And his expression?

Said everything.

Grim.

Certain.

"We don't have time," he said. "If she's fully awakened, distance won't slow her."

Kai stepped forward. "Then we track her."

The Alpha shook his head once.

"You don't track something like that."

A beat.

"You survive it."

That didn't sit well.

Not with Kai.

"Explain."

Inside — The Cage

Nancy floated in darkness.

But now—

She could see it.

Not just emptiness anymore.

Bars.

Not physical.

But real.

Energy. Chains. Something ancient binding her in place.

Her breathing came fast.

Uneven.

"…no…"

She pushed against it.

Nothing.

Not even a crack.

Outside—

She could feel everything.

The movement.

The power.

The control.

But she wasn't the one doing it.

Tears burned her eyes.

"I'm still here…" she whispered.

No one answered.

Then—

A voice.

Right behind her.

"You are."

Nancy froze.

Slowly turned—

The entity stood there again.

Clearer now.

More solid.

More real.

Because it wasn't hiding anymore.

"You're watching, just like I said."

Nancy's hands shook. "Give it back."

A small smile.

"Why would I?"

Outside — The Truth

Kai grabbed the Alpha's shirt.

Hard.

"You knew about this and said nothing?!"

The Alpha didn't react.

Didn't flinch.

"Because you wouldn't have believed it."

Leo stepped in. "Try us now."

A pause.

Then—

The Alpha spoke.

And this time—

He didn't hold anything back.

"Centuries ago," he began, "before our packs, before the current bloodlines… there was something else."

Evan frowned. "Something else?"

"Not wolf," the Alpha said.

"Not human."

His eyes darkened slightly.

"Something that could control both."

Silence settled heavy.

Kai's grip loosened—just slightly.

"It didn't hunt with claws," the Alpha continued.

"It hunted with emotion."

"Fear. Pain. Obedience."

Leo's expression tightened. "Like what she did to that boy…"

The Alpha nodded once.

"It didn't need strength."

"It made others use theirs for it."

Evan muttered, "That's not power… that's control."

"That's dominance," the Alpha corrected.

"A different kind of Alpha."

That landed.

Hard.

Kai shook his head. "Then why isn't it ruling everything now?"

The Alpha's voice dropped.

"Because it was sealed."

A beat.

"Into blood."

Leo went still. "…bloodlines?"

"Yes."

"Split. Weakened. Passed down through generations until it became nothing more than a dormant fragment."

Evan's eyes widened slightly.

"…until Nancy."

The Alpha looked toward the forest.

Where she had vanished.

"She's the first in centuries strong enough to awaken it completely."

Inside — The Breaking Point

Nancy shook her head violently.

"I'm not your vessel."

The entity stepped closer.

"You already are."

"I didn't choose this!"

"No," it agreed calmly.

"But you opened the door."

Nancy's breath hitched.

That again.

"You felt it," it continued.

"When you told that boy to stop."

"When you felt his fear."

"When it answered you."

Nancy's voice broke. "That doesn't mean I'm you."

The entity leaned in slightly.

Close.

Too close.

"No," it whispered.

"It means you're finally becoming what you were meant to be."

Something inside Nancy snapped.

"I don't want it!"

For the first time—

The entity paused.

Really paused.

And when it spoke again—

Its tone shifted.

Not mocking.

Not cruel.

Something… quieter.

"You will."

That scared her more than anything else.

Outside — The First Sign

A distant explosion echoed.

Not sound—

Energy.

All of them felt it.

At the same time.

Kai's head snapped toward the direction instantly.

"…that's her."

The Alpha didn't hesitate.

"She's testing the control."

Leo exhaled sharply. "On what?!"

Another pulse hit.

Stronger.

Closer.

Evan's voice dropped. "…not what."

A beat.

"…who."

Silence.

Then Kai moved.

Fast.

This time—

No hesitation.

No waiting.

"I'm bringing her back."

The Alpha followed.

"So you'd better be ready," he said darkly.

"Because if she doesn't come back—"

His eyes hardened.

"We may have to stop her."

Kai didn't respond.

But the tension in his body said everything.

He wasn't accepting that option.

Not now.

Not ever.

Inside — The Crack

Nancy dropped to her knees.

Breathing hard.

Shaking.

"I won't disappear…" she whispered.

The entity watched her quietly.

Then—

"You don't have to."

Nancy froze.

"…what?"

A slow step forward.

"You're fighting me like I'm separate from you."

A pause.

"I'm not."

Nancy's heart pounded.

"That's a lie."

"Is it?"

The entity tilted its head.

"Then why can you still feel everything I do?"

Nancy went still.

Because—

She could.

The power.

The movement.

The awareness.

It wasn't cut off.

It was shared.

And that realization?

Terrifying.

"You don't have to lose," it said softly.

"You just have to stop resisting."

Nancy's fingers curled into fists.

Trembling.

Torn.

Because a small—

Dangerous—

Part of her…

Was starting to understand.

Yeah…
