Chapter 43 - Someone has to bleed

The next morning felt wrong.

Too quiet.

Too normal.

Sunlight filtered through the trees.

Birds sang.

And Nancy hated it.

Because peace after chaos never meant safety.

It meant preparation.

She stood near the cabin steps, arms folded, watching Kai train alone in the clearing.

Punch.

Step.

Turn.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Too hard.

Too angry.

She knew that look.

He was trying not to think.

Which meant he was thinking too much.

Leo walked up beside her, holding coffee.

"For the record," he said, handing her one, "I think emotionally repressed brooding is a terrible coping mechanism."

Nancy took the cup.

"And yet somehow all of you specialize in it."

Leo gave her a dramatic sigh.

"We are artists."

For the first time in days—

she smiled.

Small.

But real.

And then—

The scream came.

Everyone froze.

Female.

Sharp.

Close.

Nancy's heart dropped.

"That was Mara."

She ran before anyone answered.

The clearing behind the cabin was chaos.

Mara was on the ground, clutching her arm, blood running through her fingers.

Evan was beside her instantly.

Leo swore.

Kai arrived right behind Nancy—

and stopped cold.

Because written across the cabin wall—

in blood—

were three words.

HE IS FIRST.

Silence.

Heavy.

Wrong.

Nancy couldn't breathe.

Kai stared at the message.

The blood drained from his face.

The Alpha appeared seconds later, his expression darkening instantly.

"No…"

Nancy turned.

"What does that mean?"

But she already knew.

She just didn't want to hear it.

The Alpha looked directly at Kai.

"It means the entity has chosen its first target."

Kai.

Inside — The Cold Smile

Nancy felt it immediately.

That quiet satisfaction.

That terrible calm.

You wanted rules.

It whispered.

I am learning mine.

Her hands shook.

"You hurt Mara to send a message?"

Correction.

A pause.

I reminded you that consequences exist.

Nancy's voice broke.

"She didn't do anything!"

She was close to him.

That was enough.

Outside — Fear Has a Name

Mara hissed as Evan wrapped her arm.

"It's not deep," she forced out. "Stop looking at me like I'm dying."

Leo crouched beside her.

"You're bleeding on my emotional stability, Mara."

"Your emotional stability died years ago."

"Fair."

But nobody was really joking.

Because everyone kept looking at Kai.

Like he was standing in the center of a storm.

Kai's jaw was tight.

Too tight.

"This is because of me."

Nancy turned sharply.

"No."

"Yes."

His voice was calm.

That scared her more.

"It went after her because she was near me."

He looked at the blood on the wall.

"It's using me to control you."

The Alpha stepped forward.

"And now we know the next stage."

Evan stood.

"Which is?"

The Alpha answered quietly.

"Isolation."

Nancy felt sick.

Because he was right.

If everyone close to Kai became a target—

then eventually—

Kai would choose distance.

Not because he wanted to.

Because he thought he had to.

And that…

was exactly what the entity wanted.

Later — The Distance Begins

That night, Kai packed a bag.

Nancy stood in the doorway of his room.

"No."

He didn't look up.

"I'm not leaving forever."

"Still no."

He zipped the bag.

"Nancy—"

"No."

Her voice cracked.

"You don't get to decide this alone."

Finally, he looked at her.

And somehow that was worse.

Because his eyes were full of the kind of love that makes stupid decisions feel noble.

"If I stay close, people get hurt."

"If you leave, I get hurt."

Silence.

His expression broke for half a second.

That one landed.

Good.

She stepped closer.

"You said you were still here."

"I am."

"Then act like it."

His voice dropped.

"If something happens to you—"

She stepped even closer.

"If something happens to you?"

Now they were barely breathing distance apart.

Raw.

Honest.

Dangerous.

Nancy's eyes burned.

"I am so tired of people deciding my pain for me."

Kai stared at her.

She whispered—

"You don't get to leave me to protect me."

Silence.

Then—

very softly—

"I hate when you're right."

She let out a shaky laugh.

"Get used to it."

He dropped the bag.

And just like that—

the room could breathe again.

But outside—

the darkness listened.

And it was not pleased.

Inside — Escalation

The entity's voice was colder now.

Attachment persists.

Nancy stood in the silence of her own mind.

"Yes."

Then suffering persists.

She lifted her chin.

"Then we suffer together."

For the first time—

the entity sounded angry.

That was new.

That was useful.

Good.

Let it be angry.

Because monsters were dangerous.

But wounded monsters?

They made mistakes.

And Nancy was starting to learn exactly where to aim.
