Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: A New Comfort

The days after that quiet agreement began to change… slowly.

Not in a way others could notice.

But for Airi Takahashi—

Everything felt slightly different.

🏫 A Normal Day… Not So Normal

"Airi, can you check this?"

"Sure."

Her voice was calm, her smile perfect—just like always.

From the outside, nothing had changed.

But inside—

Her eyes kept drifting.

Toward the window.

Toward him.

Ren Kuroda sat in his usual spot, lazily flipping through a book. Same bored expression. Same quiet presence.

Like nothing in the world mattered.

"…Liar," Airi thought.

She knew better now.

That wasn't the real him.

⏳ After School Routine

That afternoon, Airi finished her chores faster than usual.

Cooking.

Cleaning.

Organizing everything.

"…Done."

She wiped her hands and looked around the quiet house.

Empty.

Like always.

She sighed.

"…I guess I'll go out for a bit."

But deep down—

She already knew where she was going.

🌆 The Meeting Spot

The same quiet street.

The same soft evening light.

And—

He was there.

Ren leaned casually against a wall, scrolling through his phone.

Like he expected her.

"…You're late," he said without looking up.

Airi frowned.

"I didn't say I was coming."

"…You came anyway."

"…That's not the point."

He glanced at her—and a faint smile appeared.

"…Sure."

🚶 Walking Side by Side

They started walking together naturally this time.

No forcing. No awkwardness.

Just… comfortable silence.

"…Did you finish your work?" Ren asked.

"Of course."

"…Of course."

She glanced at him.

"What about you?"

"I did enough to not fail."

"That's not something to be proud of."

"…I'm not proud."

Airi sighed.

"You're impossible."

"And you're too serious."

"…Someone has to be."

🏠 An Unexpected Turn

As they reached a small intersection, Airi suddenly stopped.

"…Do you want to come over?"

Ren blinked.

"…Your house?"

"…Yes."

"That's… sudden."

Airi crossed her arms.

"Don't misunderstand. I just made too much food."

"…That sounds like an excuse."

"…Do you want to eat or not?"

Ren looked at her for a moment—

Then nodded.

"…Fine."

🍳 Inside Airi's World

The moment they entered—

Ren noticed everything.

Clean.

Organized.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

"…You live alone?" he asked.

"Not exactly. My parents are just… busy."

"…I see."

Airi walked into the kitchen.

"Sit. I'll bring the food."

Ren sat down, watching her.

The way she moved—

Efficient.

Familiar.

Like she had done this a thousand times.

"…You do this every day?" he asked.

"Yes."

"…That's tiring."

"…I'm used to it."

Ren didn't reply.

But his expression softened slightly.

🍽️ Dinner Together

Airi placed the food on the table.

"Eat before it gets cold."

Ren took a bite.

Then paused.

"…This is really good."

Airi blinked.

"…It's normal."

"No, it's not."

She looked away slightly.

"…Thanks."

For a moment—

Everything felt warm.

Not the room.

Not the food.

But the atmosphere.

💬 Real Talk

"…Why do you hide?" Airi asked quietly.

Ren leaned back slightly.

"…Why do you?"

"…I asked first."

"…So did I."

She clicked her tongue.

"Fine. I'll answer."

He waited.

"…People expect things from me," she said.

"To be perfect. Responsible. Reliable."

She clenched her hand slightly.

"…If I stop being that… I don't know what I am."

Silence.

Ren looked at her.

Then spoke softly—

"…You're just you."

Airi froze.

"…That's easy for you to say."

"…It's not."

She looked at him.

For the first time—

His eyes felt… heavy.

"…People judge quickly," he continued.

"So I stopped giving them anything to judge."

"…By acting cold?"

"…By acting empty."

Airi stared at him.

"…That's kind of sad."

"…Yeah."

🌙 A Quiet Moment

After dinner—

They sat on the floor, leaning against the couch.

No talking.

Just silence.

But not the lonely kind.

The comfortable kind.

Airi glanced at him.

"…You should come again."

Ren looked at her.

"…Are you inviting me?"

"…Don't make it weird."

"…Too late."

She rolled her eyes.

But—

She smiled.

✨ Ending Scene

As Ren stood near the door to leave—

He paused.

"…Takahashi."

"…What?"

"…Thanks."

She blinked.

"…For what?"

"…For letting me be normal."

Her heart skipped.

"…You were already normal."

"…Not to anyone else."

Airi watched as he walked away.

And for the first time—

Her house didn't feel empty anymore.

She looked at the door quietly.

"…A new comfort…"

A small smile formed on her lips.
