Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 : A Sin Shared in Silence

The convent bell rang sharply through the quiet morning air.

5:00 a.m. prayer.

The sound echoed through the stone halls, waking the nuns from their rooms as they slowly made their way toward the chapel. The early morning air was cool and still, carrying the faint scent of candle wax and incense.

Christiana walked calmly among them.

Her white habit flowed neatly around her as she kept her head slightly bowed, just like the others. To anyone watching, she looked like the picture of discipline and devotion.

But inside, she felt something very different.

Her mind drifted back to the night before to the moment John had stopped her at the door, the tension between them, and how easily she had turned the situation in her favor.

A faint smile almost touched her lips.

Almost.

She quickly hid it as they entered the chapel.

Rows of wooden benches stretched across the quiet room. The soft glow of candles lit the altar while the sisters settled into their places. Murmured prayers slowly filled the space.

Christiana knelt.

Calm.

Composed.

Untouched by guilt.

Across the chapel, John stood near the altar.

From the outside, he looked exactly as he always did calm, serious, devoted. But inside, his thoughts were anything but peaceful.

He had barely slept.

Every time he closed his eyes, memories from the night before rushed back into his mind. The way Christiana had looked at him, the confidence in her voice, the feeling that he had completely lost control of a situation he should have stopped.

He forced himself to focus on the prayer book in his hands.

But then

His eyes lifted.

And landed on her.

Christiana remained perfectly still as she prayed, her head bowed slightly. She didn't look at him once.

Yet something about her calmness unsettled him even more.

How could she act like nothing had happened?

As if sensing his gaze, Christiana slowly raised her head.

Their eyes met for only a brief moment.

But it was enough.

A subtle, knowing smile flickered across her lips before she lowered her eyes again.

John quickly looked away, his jaw tightening.

Not far from them, Sister Maria, one of the older nuns, had noticed something unusual.

She had been in the convent long enough to read people well. And right now, something about the atmosphere felt… strange.

Her gaze moved between John and Christiana.

The way his attention kept drifting toward her.

The way Christiana looked completely unbothered.

Maria frowned slightly.

Something was wrong.

But she couldn't quite place it yet.

The prayer continued, voices rising softly together in devotion.

Yet beneath the peaceful surface of the chapel, a dangerous secret had already begun to grow.

And secrets inside a convent ..

Never stayed hidden forever
