Chapter 28 - Chapter 27: “Almost Kiss”

Saturday night was still alive with the glow of our little living room lamps. The truth or dare game had escalated faster than I expected, hearts pounding and cheeks burning from every teasing dare.

"Alright, Lara," Ethan said, smirking as he drew a card. "Truth or Dare?"

I hesitated, then whispered, "Dare."

His grin widened, eyes darkening with mischief. "I dare you… to lean in closer to me. Just… for five seconds."

My chest skipped a beat. "F-Five seconds?!" I whispered, flustered.

"Yes. Five seconds. No more," he teased, inching closer himself, his leg brushing mine. "You can do it, can't you?"

I swallowed hard, heart racing, and leaned in slowly. Our faces were so close I could feel his warm breath mingling with mine. The world shrank to just us—the dim lights, the quiet apartment, the fluttering rain of emotion between us.

"Closer…" he murmured, teasing, though his eyes were intense.

I trembled, closing my eyes for a moment. I could feel his lips so near—too near—and my pulse was deafening. My hands rested lightly on my knees, unsure if I should move or stay frozen.

"Almost there," he whispered, voice low, sending shivers down my spine.

And then… we paused. Neither of us moved. Breath mingling, hearts pounding, but the rules of the contract held us back—just barely.

I opened my eyes, meeting his gaze. "Ethan… we shouldn't…" My voice trembled, betraying both fear and longing.

"I know…" he whispered, slowly pulling back, though not entirely. "But… it's so hard."

"I… I feel it too," I admitted, cheeks flushed, eyes shining with desire. "Every time you're close, I… I can't control it."

His thumb brushed lightly across my hand, lingering just a second longer than necessary. "Me neither," he said softly. "I want you. Right now. But… we have to be careful."

I nodded, my breath shaky. "Careful… but I don't want to stop feeling this."

He leaned slightly closer again, enough to feel the warmth radiating from his chest. "Neither do I," he whispered, almost daring, almost dangerous. "One day, Lara… one day soon, I won't hold back."

My stomach fluttered, and I realized I was smiling despite the tension. Contract marriage, rules, boundaries—they existed, yes. But tonight, with the teasing, the game, and the almost-kiss, none of it mattered as much as the pull between us.

"Five seconds are over," I whispered, trying to steady my racing heart.

He smirked, leaning back slightly, though his gaze never left mine. "And yet… it feels like it just started."

I laughed nervously, hiding my face in my hands, but my heart was screaming something else entirely.

Because in that near-kiss, in that tiny, suspended moment… everything changed.
