Ava's eyes snapped open, her heart racing as she sat up in bed. The room was dark, but she could feel it – the power coursing through her veins like a storm about to break. She tried to calm herself, focusing on her breathing, but it was like trying to hold back a tsunami.
Suddenly, the air around her swirled, whirling her papers and clothes into a mini tornado. Ava gasped, her eyes wide as she tried to control the gust, but it was too late. The wind howled, books flew off her shelf, and her curtains billowed like wild flags.
"Ava, what's happening?" her mum shouted from the next room, as the sounds of chaos echoed through the flat.
Ava stumbled out of bed, panic setting in. "I don't know! I can't control it!"
Lena burst into the room, her eyes scanning the chaos. "Focus, Ava! Ground yourself!"
But Ava was beyond control. The air raged on, and then, like a switch flipped, water began to pour from the ceiling, drowning her bed. Ava shrieked as her mum grabbed her, pulling her to the door.
"Get out!" Lena shouted, pushing Ava into the hallway. "Now!"
Ava stumbled into the living room, the floor now shaking beneath her feet. Earth tremors? She couldn't keep track. Flames licked at the edges of her vision, catching the curtains on fire as she watched in horror.
Lena was suddenly beside her, her voice calm but firm. "Ava, listen to me! Focus on one element. Air. Control the air."
Ava gasped, trying to grasp onto the swirling winds. Slowly, the howling began to subside, the water stopped pouring, and the flames dwindled. The earth stilled.
Breathless, Ava collapsed onto the couch, her mum sitting beside her, a hand on her shoulder. "You did it, Ava. You stopped it."
Ava looked up, tears streaming down her face. "What happened?"
Lena's expression was a mix of concern and something else – something like pride. "Your powers are getting stronger, Ava. You've got all four elements. It's rare, but you're learning to control them."
Ava felt like she'd been punched again. All four elements? Water, air, fire, earth? "How do I... how do I stop it from happening again?"
Lena smiled softly. "You learn to harness it, Ava. I'll teach you. We'll work on it together."
The night wore on, with Ava asking questions, her mum answering, and the chaos slowly getting tidied up. As they sipped tea in the kitchen, Ava felt a sense of clarity she'd never had before.
"Mum?" she said, breaking the silence.
"Yeah?"
"I'm scared."
Lena reached out, pulling Ava into a hug. "Don't be, Ava. You're not alone. You've got me, and you've got your powers. And together, we'll figure it out."
Ava smiled, feeling a spark of determination ignite within her. She was done hiding. It was time to learn, to grow, and to unleash.
As they hugged, Ava felt a gentle breeze whisper through the room, like the elements themselves were acknowledging her.
The clock ticked past 2 AM, and Ava finally drifted off to sleep, her mum's words echoing in her mind: "You've got this, Ava."
The darkness closed in, but for the first time, Ava felt a sense of peace. She was ready to face whatever came next.
