Chapter 2 - Chapter 2- Weight of secrets

Ava trudged through the front door, her backpack slipping off her shoulder as she dropped onto the worn couch. Her mum, Lena, looked up from the sewing machine, a thread of concern weaving into her voice.

"Hey love, rough day?" she asked, pausing to snip a thread.

Ava shrugged, letting her hair fall like a curtain around her face. "Just school stuff."

Lena nodded, her eyes knowing, but she didn't press. Instead, she went back to stitching, the hum of the machine filling the small flat.

The silence stretched, with only the sounds of fabric moving under the needle and Ava's thoughts screaming to break free. Finally, she blurted, "Mum, can I ask you something?"

Lena's hands stilled, and she looked up, her dark eyes sharp. "Anything, Ava."

Ava hesitated, her fingers twisting in her lap. "Did you... did you have powers when you were young?"

Lena's expression flickered, just for a moment, before she smiled softly. "Why do you ask?"

Ava bit her lip. She hadn't meant to tip her hand, but now she was in it. "Just wondering," she mumbled.

Lena set down the sewing, her movements slow as she pulled up a chair next to Ava. "Ava, I know things have been... weird for you lately. You can talk to me, you know that, right?"

Ava nodded, feeling a lump form in her throat. She wanted to tell her mum everything – about the swirling winds, the heat pricking her fingertips sometimes, the fear of being found out. But the words stuck.

Lena sighed, her eyes clouding with memories. "I had... abilities, when I was younger. Not exactly like yours, but... different. I was taught to control them, to keep them hidden."

Ava's head snapped up. "You were?"

Lena nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "Yes. My mother – your grandmother – she taught me how to harness them. It's not always easy, but it's manageable."

Ava felt like she'd been punched in the gut. Her mum had powers too? Why hadn't she told her? "Mum—"

The doorbell cut her off, and Lena stood up, a look of mild surprise on her face. "I'll get it. You stay here."

Ava barely registered the interruption, her mind racing. Powers ran in the family? What did that mean for her?

Lena returned with a quiet smile. "Ava, it's Mrs. Patel from next door. She's bringing over some extra food for dinner."

Ava nodded, tuning out the small talk as her thoughts swirled. Powers. Family. Secrets.

As Mrs. Patel left, Lena turned back to Ava, her expression serious. "We need to talk more about this, okay? Your... abilities. They're not something to be afraid of."

Ava felt a mix of relief and anxiety. She wanted answers, but she was scared of what she might learn.

"Mum?" she said, as Lena turned to head back to her sewing.

"Yeah, love?"

"Do you think... do you think I'm like you? With the powers?"

Lena's face softened, and she came back to sit with Ava. "Ava, you are so much more than just your powers. But yes, I think we share... something. We'll figure it out, okay?"

Ava nodded, a tiny spark of hope igniting in her chest. Maybe, just maybe, she wasn't alone in this.

The evening drew in, with dinner, homework, and the usual routine. But Ava's mind was elsewhere, caught in the undertow of her new reality. Powers, family secrets, and a mum who understood.

As she lay in bed later, Ava felt a whisper of wind stir her hair. She closed her eyes, focusing on the breeze, and for the first time, didn't fight it.
