Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Name No One Wanted

Crestview High never really slept.

Even in the early hours of the morning, before the first bell rang and before the teachers took their positions, the place already breathed with quiet tension. Expensive cars lined the front gates like a silent show of power, black, silver, polished to perfection. Students stepped out of them one after the other, uniforms crisp, shoes spotless, voices low but confident.

Everything about Crestview said one thing clearly:

You either belonged… or you didn't.

Inside the main building, the halls gleamed under soft lighting. Lockers shut with neat clicks, heels tapped rhythmically against the tiled floor, and laughter echoed in small, controlled bursts. Nothing here was chaotic. Nothing was out of place, except, maybe, the whispers.

"They're actually doing it this year?"

"I heard it's already confirmed."

"No way… Crestview doesn't just take in people like that."

The whispers traveled quickly, slipping from one group to another like something alive.

At the center of it all stood three girls.

They didn't need to raise their voices. They didn't need to demand attention. It came naturally, drawn to them like gravity.

Vanessa Crowne leaned casually against a row of lockers, her arms crossed, her expression unreadable. Everything about her was precise, from the way her uniform fit perfectly to the way her eyes scanned people without really seeing them.

Beside her, Bianca Frost adjusted her sleeve with a small, impatient sigh. Her sharp gaze flicked toward a group of girls nearby who immediately lowered their voices.

Lila Hart stood on the other side, soft smile in place, but her eyes didn't match it. They never did.

"So it's true?" Bianca finally said, her tone edged with disbelief. "They're bringing in a scholarship student."

Vanessa didn't answer immediately. She pushed herself off the locker slowly, her gaze drifting toward the far end of the hallway where a few juniors had gathered, whispering like they were afraid to be heard.

"It's not just a rumor," Lila added gently, though there was nothing gentle about the way her fingers tightened around her books. "My father mentioned it last night. Something about 'diversity' and 'opportunity.'"

Bianca scoffed under her breath. "At Crestview? That's a joke."

Vanessa's lips curved slightly,not quite a smile.

"Let them bring her," she said calmly.

There was something in her voice that made the air feel thinner.

"It won't last."

The bell hadn't rung yet, but the hallway had already begun to shift. Conversations softened, movements slowed.

Someone important was coming.

It wasn't announced. It didn't need to be.

You could feel it.

From the far entrance, three figures walked in, not hurried, not hesitant, just steady. Certain

Ethan Vale walked at the center, his expression calm, unreadable. He didn't look around much, but somehow, he noticed everything. People moved out of his way without being told, like it was instinct.

To his right was Ryan Blake, hands in his pockets, his posture relaxed but his presence anything but. His eyes lingered longer than necessary, sharp and assessing, like he was always measuring something no one else could see.

And then there was Kai Hunter.

He walked slightly behind them, slower, almost careless. His tie was loose, his sleeves rolled just enough to break the rules without getting called out. There was something unpredictable about him, something that made people look away too quickly when his gaze passed over them.

The whispers died down completely.

Vanessa watched them approach, her expression unchanged, though Bianca straightened slightly beside her.

"Well," Bianca muttered, "looks like they've heard."

Ryan's eyes flicked briefly toward the three girls, a small smirk playing at the corner of his lips.

"Hard not to," he said casually. "Everyone's talking about it."

"A scholarship case?" Bianca tilted her head. "Are you interested now?"

Ryan didn't answer directly. Instead, his gaze drifted past them, thoughtful.

"Depends," he said after a moment. "Might be entertaining."

Ethan remained silent, though his eyes shifted slightly, like he was listening to something beyond the conversation.

Kai let out a quiet laugh.

"Crestview's getting generous," he said. "Didn't think I'd see the day."

Vanessa stepped forward slightly, her presence steady, controlled.

"It's not generosity," she said. "It's a mistake."

For a brief moment, no one spoke.

Then Kai's eyes met hers, something unreadable flickering in them.

"Guess we'll see," he replied.

Before anything else could be said, the sharp sound of heels echoed down the hall.

Not rushed. Not hesitant.

Measured.

The students nearest the corridor instinctively straightened as a figure approached tall, composed, carrying an authority that didn't need to be announced.

Mr. Adrian Wolfe.

His presence didn't demand attention the way the others did. It pulled it in quietly, like a current beneath still water.

"Good morning," he said, his voice smooth, controlled.

Students greeted him back almost automatically.

"Morning, sir."

"Good morning, Mr. Wolfe."

He moved past them with ease, his gaze sweeping across the hallway not lingering, not searching, just… observing.

For a brief second, his eyes paused on a girl standing near the edge of the corridor. She stiffened almost immediately, her grip tightening on the strap of her bag.

It lasted less than a moment.

Then he continued walking.

If anyone noticed, they didn't say anything.

They never did.

Vanessa's eyes followed him for a second longer than necessary before she looked away.

"Creepy," Bianca muttered under her breath.

Lila gave a soft laugh. "He's just strict."

But her voice lacked conviction.

The tension in the hallway lingered even after he disappeared around the corner.

Like something had shifted slightly… just enough to be felt.

A sudden buzz of movement broke the stillness.

Near the administration office, a small crowd had begun to gather. Students leaned in, trying to see past each other, curiosity written openly across their faces.

"What's going on?"

"Did they post it already?"

"No way, it's too early."

But it wasn't.

A sheet of paper had been pinned neatly to the board, clean and official.

The crowd grew thicker.

Vanessa didn't move at first.

She didn't need to push through people to see.

Bianca and Lila followed closely behind her as she stepped forward, the crowd parting just enough to let them through.

Ryan and the others weren't far behind.

There was something almost… expectant in the air now.

Vanessa's gaze lifted to the paper.

For a second, nothing changed.

Then a subtle shift.

Bianca leaned closer. "Well?"

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

Her eyes stayed fixed on one name.

Just one.

And then, slowly, she exhaled.

"Interesting," she said quietly.

Ryan stepped up beside her, glancing over the list.

His expression didn't change much.

But his eyes did.

Kai tilted his head slightly, reading it with a faint, almost amused look.

Ethan said nothing at all.

Around them, whispers started again, faster this time, sharper.

"That's her?"

"That's the one they chose?"

"Seriously?"

The name sat there, simple, almost unimpressive compared to everything around it.

But somehow… it didn't feel small.

Not anymore.

Because now everyone was looking at it.

Everyone was talking about it.

And whether they liked it or not Crestview High had just made space for someone new.

"Maya Cole".
