Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: After Lights Out

The gates of Crestview High didn't just open, they parted.

Maya felt it the moment the car rolled through, the world outside slipping away like something unfinished. The road inside curved neatly, lined with trimmed hedges and tall trees that cast long shadows across the pavement. Everything was too perfect. Too controlled.

She tightened her grip on her bag.

Students were everywhere, walking in groups, laughing, dragging suitcases behind them. Their uniforms were sharp, clean, and effortless. No one looked confused. No one looked out of place.

Except her.

The car came to a stop near the main building.

"This is as far as I go," the driver said.

Maya nodded. "Thank you."

Her voice sounded smaller than she expected.

She stepped out, the air different here, cooler, quieter, like it carried secrets she wasn't meant to understand yet.

No one noticed her.

Or maybe they did… and chose not to.

She adjusted her bag and started walking.

Every step felt louder than it should.

The girls' hostel stood a little away from the main building, a tall structure with glass windows that reflected everything but revealed nothing. A sign at the entrance read:

Crestview Girls' Residence.

Simple, elegant and cold.

Inside, the air smelled faintly of perfume and polished wood. A woman at the front desk barely looked up as Maya approached.

"Name?"

"Maya… Maya Cole."

A pause. Then a glance.

Not warm. Not welcoming.

Just… measured.

"Room 3B. Second floor," the woman said, sliding a key across the desk.

Maya took it. "Thank you."

No response.

She turned and headed for the stairs.

Room 3B was already occupied.

The door was slightly open, voices drifting out, soft laughter, the rustle of movement.

Maya hesitated before knocking.

The voices stopped immediately.

Then,

"Come in."

Maya pushed the door open slowly.

Three girls.

Three different expressions.

The first one sat on the bed by the window, her posture straight, her gaze sharp. She looked Maya up and down in one quick motion, unimpressed.

The second girl lay on her bed, scrolling through her phone. She glanced up briefly, then went back to her screen like Maya didn't exist.

The third smiled.

Too quickly.

"You must be the new girl," she said, standing up. "Maya, right?"

Maya nodded. "Yes."

"I'm Tessa," she said warmly. "That's Nadia" she gestured to the one on the bed "and that's Chloe."

The sharp-eyed girl didn't speak.

She just kept looking at Maya like she was trying to figure something out.

"Nice to meet you," Maya said quietly.

"Mm," Chloe finally responded, her tone flat.

Nadia didn't even look up this time.

Tessa clapped her hands lightly. "You can take that bed," she said, pointing to the one near the door. "We already arranged everything."

Maya nodded again, moving toward it.

As she set her bag down, she could feel it.

The silence.

The kind that wasn't empty, but filled with unspoken things.

"You're the scholarship student, right?" Chloe asked suddenly.

Maya paused.

"…Yes."

Another look.

This one lingered longer.

"Thought so," Chloe said, leaning back slightly.

Tessa laughed softly. "Ignore her," she said. "She's always like that."

"I'm just saying," Chloe replied, her eyes still on Maya. "Crestview doesn't just let anyone in."

Maya didn't respond.

She just continued unpacking slowly, carefully.

Nadia finally spoke, her voice lazy. "Relax. If she's here, she passed whatever test they gave her."

"Or someone pulled strings," Chloe muttered.

Tessa shot her a look. "Enough."

Silence fell again.

Maya folded her uniform neatly, placing it on the bed.

She didn't know what to say.

Didn't know what was expected.

So she said nothing.

Night came faster than she expected.

By the time lights-out was announced, the entire building had gone quiet.

Too quiet.

Maya lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling.

She wasn't asleep.

Not even close.

Her roommates had settled in quickly, soft breathing, occasional movement, but something about the silence kept her awake.

It didn't feel peaceful.

It felt… watchful.

Her eyes drifted to the window.

Dark.

Nothing outside.

Just then a sound, soft, barely there.

Maya froze.

It came again.

A faint shuffle, like footsteps.

Not inside the room.

Outside.

In the hallway.

She held her breath.

Another step.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Her heart began to pound.

She turned her head slightly, glancing toward the door.

No light underneath it.

Just darkness.

The sound stopped.

For a moment, everything went still.

Then, a whisper.

Maya sat up immediately.

Her pulse spiked.

She strained to listen.

Nothing.

Maybe she imagined it.

Maybe it was just the building settling.

She lay back down slowly.

Closed her eyes.

Tried to breathe.

Then,

A thud, this one louder, clear, right outside.

Maya's eyes snapped open.

She sat up again, this time faster.

Her gaze locked on the door.

No one else in the room stirred.

Not Tessa.

Not Nadia.

Not Chloe.

Like they couldn't hear it.

Or…

Like they were used to it.

Maya swallowed.

Her feet touched the floor before she could stop herself.

Slowly, quietly, she stood up.

Each step toward the door felt heavier.

Her hand hovered over the handle.

She hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then she turned it.

The door creaked open slightly.

The hallway was dim.

Only a few lights were on.

And at first nothing, empty.

Maya stepped out just a little.

Her eyes adjusted.

Then she saw it.

At the far end of the hallway

Movement.

Two figures.

One standing.

One… not.

Her breath caught.

The standing figure was holding the other.

No

Dragging.

Maya's heart slammed against her chest.

She couldn't move.

Couldn't look away.

The person being dragged didn't fight.

Didn't scream.

Just… limp.

Like they had no strength left.

The standing figure paused suddenly.

Maya froze.

Slowly

Very slowly

He turned.

Even from a distance, she could feel it.

His eyes.

On her.

Her body went cold.

For a second, neither of them moved.

Then

He let go.

The other person dropped to the floor with a dull sound.

And he started walking toward her.

Not fast.

Not slow.

Just… certain.

Maya stepped back instinctively.

Her hand hit the door.

Her mind screamed at her to run.

But her legs wouldn't move.

The closer he got, the clearer his face became.

And when she recognized him

Her breath stopped.

Kai Hunter.

But something was wrong.

Very wrong.

His expression was empty.

Cold in a way that didn't match the boy she had seen earlier.

Like this was a different version of him.

A real one.

He stopped a few steps away.

Close enough now.

Too close.

Maya couldn't speak.

Couldn't think.

His gaze flicked briefly behind her toward the room.

Then back to her.

Silence stretched between them.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Then he tilted his head slightly.

And spoke.

Low.

Calm.

Terrifyingly steady.

"You're new."

It wasn't a question.

Maya forced herself to nod.

He took one step closer.

Her back pressed fully against the door now.

Her heart wouldn't slow down.

For a moment, he just looked at her.

Like he was deciding something.

Then

A faint smirk touched his lips.

Gone as quickly as it came.

"You didn't see anything," he said.

Maya didn't respond.

Didn't move.

Couldn't.

His gaze held hers for one last second.

Then he turned.

Just like that.

And walked away.

Leaving her standing there.

Frozen.

Shaking.

And completely aware of one thing

Crestview High wasn't just hiding secrets.

It was built on them.
