Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 3: The Girl who watches

Kael Draven did not like being watched because watching meant interest and interest meant trouble and trouble always came with consequences he could not control.

‎He felt her before he saw her again.

‎Nyra Voss.

‎The awareness of her presence clung to him as he moved through the hallway like a quiet pressure at the back of his mind refusing to fade no matter how many turns he took or how many faces passed between them.

‎She wasn't following him openly.

‎She didn't need to. Kael stopped at his locker his movements slow and deliberate as he opened it pretending to focus on something inside while his senses stretched outward picking up fragments of sound and movement around him until they found her again. Steady breathing. Unchanging rhythm.

Too controlled. She was close. Closer than before.

‎"You're tense." The voice came from behind him calm and smooth carrying no hesitation no fear no uncertainty.

Kael didn't react immediately.

‎He closed his locker gently then turned his head just enough to look at her over his shoulder his expression unreadable.

‎Nyra Voss stood a few steps away her posture relaxed but not careless her eyes locked onto his like she had been waiting for this exact moment. "Am I" Kael replied his tone flat. Nyra tilted her head slightly studying him in a way that felt too direct too intentional like she wasn't just looking at him but through him.

‎"Yes" she said simply.

‎Silence stretched between them but it wasn't empty it was filled with something unspoken something sharp and dangerous that neither of them acknowledged yet neither of them ignored.

‎Kael turned fully now facing her his gaze steady "You've been watching me."

‎Nyra didn't deny it. "I have." No excuses. No hesitation.

Just truth delivered without emotion.

‎That alone made Kael's guard rise higher.

‎"Why" he asked.

‎Nyra's eyes flickered briefly not away but inward like she was choosing her answer carefully before she spoke.

‎"Because you're different."

‎The words were simple but they carried weight more than they should have and Kael felt something inside him shift at the way she said it not curious not impressed but certain.

‎"You don't know me" he said quietly.

‎"I don't need to" Nyra replied.

‎Another pause. Longer this time.

Kael took a step toward her closing the small distance between them his presence sharpening as the air around him seemed to grow heavier without him even realizing it.

‎"Then say what you came to say" he said his voice lower now edged with something darker something that wasn't entirely under control.

‎Nyra didn't move. Didn't step back. Didn't flinch.

‎Instead she held his gaze and for the first time something almost unreadable flickered in her eyes not fear not weakness but something closer to recognition.

‎"You're changing" she said.

‎The words hit harder than they should have.

‎Kael's jaw tightened slightly his fingers curling at his sides as that familiar pulse stirred deep within his chest responding to her words like they had touched something real.

‎"You talk like you know what that means" he said.

‎"I do."There was no doubt in her voice. And that was the problem.

‎Kael searched her face for any sign of deception but found none only calm controlled certainty and that made something in him uneasy because people who were sure were usually dangerous.

‎"What do you want" he asked finally.

‎Nyra went quiet for a moment her gaze lingering on him before she answered.

‎"To see what you become." Not help. Not protect. Not stop.

Just observe. Like he was something already set on a path that couldn't be changed.

Something inside Kael reacted violently to that idea a sudden surge of heat rushing through him so fast it made his vision blur for a split second and when it cleared his eyes weren't the same.

‎Darker. Sharper. Alive with something that wasn't entirely human. Nyra saw it.

He knew she did because for the first time her breathing changed just slightly not fear but awareness sharpened to its peak.

‎"Careful" she said softly.

‎That one word almost sounded like a warning.

‎But not for herself. For him.

Kael forced himself to step back the moment stretching thin as he dragged that rising force back down into whatever place it came from his control slipping but not breaking.

‎Not yet.

‎"Stay away from me" he said quietly though the words lacked true conviction because even as he said them he knew she wouldn't listen.

‎Nyra's expression didn't change.

‎"I can't."

‎The honesty in that answer felt heavier than any lie.

‎Kael held her gaze for one last second then turned away before whatever was building inside him pushed any further because something about her presence made it harder to keep control and he didn't understand why.

‎But he would. Soon. Because this wasn't random.

‎None of it was. And deep down Kael could feel it. Something had already started.

‎...

‎Iron Dominion Territory

‎The training grounds were silent except for the dull sound of a body hitting the ground hard enough to crack the surface beneath it.

‎Riven Ashka stood over his opponent his chest rising slowly his expression cold and unimpressed as the defeated wolf struggled to breathe beneath him.

‎"Weak" Riven muttered before stepping back.

‎Around him others watched carefully none daring to speak because Riven was not someone you challenged unless you were ready to lose more than just a fight.

‎A figure approached from the shadows his presence alone enough to shift the atmosphere instantly.

‎Darius Voss.

‎Riven straightened immediately lowering his head slightly in acknowledgment though his pride never fully allowed submission.

‎"You're improving" Darius said calmly his eyes scanning the scene before settling on Riven.

‎"Not enough" Riven replied.

‎A faint smile touched Darius's lips "Good answer."

‎Silence followed for a moment before Darius spoke again his tone quieter now more deliberate.

‎"There's something you need to see."

‎Riven's eyes narrowed slightly but he didn't question instead he followed as Darius turned and began walking toward the inner structure of the Dominion.

‎They entered a dimly lit chamber where a single screen flickered to life casting a cold glow across the room.

‎On it was a figure.

‎Kael Draven.

‎Walking through the school hallway unaware of the eyes watching him from far beyond his world.

‎Riven stared at the screen his expression shifting subtly from indifference to interest then to something sharper something more dangerous.

‎"Who is he" Riven asked.

‎Darius's gaze remained fixed on Kael his voice calm but carrying something far heavier beneath it.

‎"He is the beginning of a war."

‎Riven's lips curved slightly not in amusement but anticipation.

‎"Then I'll end him before it starts."

‎Darius didn't respond immediately.

‎But when he did his voice was softer almost thoughtful.

‎"You can try."

‎The screen flickered again freezing on Kael's face his eyes dark and unreadable as if even through the image something deeper was looking back.

‎And somewhere far away in Gravehold City Kael Draven felt it.

‎That same quiet pull.

‎Like something had just set its sights on him.
