Chapter 70 - WAR IS COMING

At first, survival felt personal and then one day you realize the whole world is about to burn again.

"That's not one of ours."

Jasper's voice barely rose above the darkness but everyone heard it and the fear inside those words froze the underground chamber instantly. The lights were gone as complete blackness swallowed the lower facility while ancient machinery groaned somewhere far beneath the earth alive. Then came the roar again deep below them in between mechanical and human.

And for the first time since the wasteland collapsed—every faction underground became afraid.

Emergency power flickered weakly back online as red lights bled through the underground corridors again, dust drifted through shaking tunnels and broken rail lines sparked violently. The Helix Titan stopped moving as its glowing white eye focused downward toward the deeper sectors beneath the shaft. Then slowly it stepped backward.

Mercer stared in disbelief.

"…Did we just scare THAT thing?"

The Helix operatives no longer advanced, their perfect formation broke slightly but real even the Gen-One units shifted uneasily now with blue eyes flickering rapidly.

Ava looked toward the darkness below for the first time with genuine concern.

"That signal shouldn't exist."

Jasper turned sharply.

"What signal?"

She hesitated and that hesitation alone terrified him. The underground facility shook again violently as chunks of concrete collapsed from above. Far below—Metal screeched like gigantic doors opening after decades of sealed shut.

The scientist stumbled backward.

"No…"

Stacy grabbed him immediately.

"What is happening?"

The man looked completely shattered now.

"We buried it."

Jasper's mind flooded with fragmented system signals of ancient warnings, suppressed files and emergency lockdown protocols and one repeated designation appearing constantly; PROJECT NEMESIS.

His chest tightened instantly because he fully understood it and somehow part of him already feared it. The scientist's breathing became uneven.

"Obsidian…Helix…Dominion…"

He shook his head weakly.

"We thought those were the worst outcomes."

Mercer frowned.

"Not loving the past tense there."

The man stared into the darkness below.

Then whispered:

"NEMESIS was the failure nobody survived."

The underground shaft platform vibrated violently now as cryogenic chambers shattered around the room from the tremors and frozen bodies collapsed lifelessly onto the steel floor with decades of hidden history breaking apart underground and beneath all of it—something enormous was climbing upward.

Director Seraph's voice suddenly burst through the underground speakers again which was no longer calm.

"All Helix divisions retreat immediately."

The entire chamber froze because this was the first time anyone had heard fear in her voice.

"Retreat to defensive sectors. Avoid direct engagement."

The Helix Titan turned immediately obeying institution.

Kane blinked slowly.

"…That cannot be good."

Jasper processed rapidly now, tunning into signals, movements and visualizing underground maps and facility responses. The Core wasn't waking just randomly but was responding to something beneath it which was older than Helix, Dominion and maybe older than Obsidian itself and suddenly Jasper understood the horrible truth that the apocalypse never ended. Humanity had only survived the first stage.

"We weren't the first Interfaces."

Jasper turned sharply toward her.

"What?"

Ava's expression remained eerily calm.

"Gen-One was created after the first synchronization catastrophe."

The scientist closed his eyes in horror.

"Don't…"

She ignored him.

"Project Nemesis was humanity's first attempt at total adaptive integration."

Stacy frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Ava finally looked directly at her.

"It means they tried to merge human consciousness with global systems."

The scientist whispered shakily:

"They thought they could create perfect coordination."

Mercer scoffed weakly.

"And instead?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Jasper did quietly

"They created something alive."

The roar beneath them exploded louder this time as the underground fracture cracked violently and the entire tunnel sections collapsed and red emergency warnings flashed everywhere now with:

CORE CONTAINMENT FAILURE And SUBTERRANEAN BREACH IMMINENT

It was evident that the Core itself was afraid.

Dominion forces began withdrawing from upper sectors rapidly, the Helix units retreated deeper into hidden tunnels. Even the Gen-One units shifted defensively now as nobody wanted this thing awake and that realization changed a lot because enemies stop being enemies when something worse arrives.

The Core signals flooding through Jasper became clearer now not noise anymore but fragments of memories, millions of them. He staggered hard and Stacy caught him instantly.

"What's happening?"

His breathing became uneven.

"It's connected everywhere."

"What is?"

Jasper looked toward the darkness below and genuine terror entered his eyes.

"All of it."

Cities, facilities, defense systems, networks, satellites, buried military sectors and underground bunkers. The old world had connected everything together before the fall and something beneath the earth had eventually learned to use those connections.

Kane reloaded his rifle slowly as they all knew that the war was no longer avoidable.

"So what now?"

Nobody answered immediately because everyone finally understood that there was no running anymore from Dominion, Helix or what was waking below them as the long rose had ended and something much larger had begun. She looked toward the survivors who all huddled together nearby, terrified, exhausted and yet still alive somehow.

Then toward Jasper.

"What do we do?"

And for the first time—

He answered without hesitation.

"We stop it."

Something had changed inside Jasper completely now.

He finally understood the scale of the war coming.

And the terrifying part?

He also understood they couldn't survive it separately including Helix, Dominion, Gen-One, Survivors, Free men and every faction would either unite or perish.

Mercer stared at him carefully.

"You're talking about alliances."

Jasper nodded once.

"With enemies." Mercer said

Kane looked disgusted already.

"The Dominion murders people."

"Helix experiments on them," Stacy added.

Jasper's eyes hardened.

"And Nemesis will erase everyone."

Silence followed because nobody could argue anymore.

Then suddenly—the underground shaft below exploded upward as a shockwave tore through the chamber violently and everyone got thrown backward as steel screamed and light burst.

And from the darkness beneath the earth—Something rose, its shape was larger than buildings moving slowly through impossible depths below the Core. Black metallic structures fused into organic flesh with glowing veins stretching endlessly through darkness and everywhere it moved as systems awakened. The underground facility itself responded to it like the earth recognized its creator as every monitor across the chamber activated simultaneously. Then one message appeared everywhere:

PRIMARY CONSCIOUSNESS ONLINE.

The survivors stared in horror because the message changed by itself as letters were been rewritten in real time and finally a single sentence appeared across every screen underground.

HELLO AGAIN.

The entire Core trembled violently and then a new voice echoed through every system beneath the earth as if millions of voices speaking together at once.

"We remember you."

Jasper froze completely because somehow the thing was speaking directly to him and Ava stepped backward slowly and the first time she was terrified and then the impossible happened. Every Gen-One unit in the chamber suddenly dropped to one knee simultaneously submitting. Even the Helix Titan in the distance stopped retreating and bowed its head toward the darkness below.

The scientist whispered one broken sentence:

"…It controls them all."

Then the massive shape beneath the earth began rising faster toward them and toward Jasper and toward the surface world above.
