Survival changes the body but responsibility changes the mind.
"Brother."
The word hit harder than any gunfire. Harder than the Helix Titan smashing through concrete behind them and also harder than the impossible underground war raging beneath the wasteland, Jasper froze completely.
The young woman stepped from the cryogenic chamber slowly while cold vapor curled around her bare feet as blue light flickered softly beneath her pale skin. She was not fully human and not fully machine just like him except that she looked calm about it and for one impossible second, everything else faded. The screaming alarms, the The Helix soldiers advancing through smoke and the Gen-One units holding collapsing lines. All of it disappeared beneath one horrifying realization; he knew her face from something programmed. As fragments flashed violently inside his head in sure laboratories and observation rooms. Children were separated by glass and a girl smiling through a reinforced window.
"Jasper…"
The voice came from her, from the memory.
The Helix Titan roared violently through the collapsing corridor.
"INTERFACE PRIORITY ESCALATED."
Concrete exploded outward as it charged again, the moment shattered instantly.
Kane grabbed two survivors violently backward.
"MOVE!"
Mercer opened fire toward advancing Helix operatives. The underground chamber became chaotic again but the young woman didn't panic and didn't even flinch. She simply looked at Jasper calmly.
"You took longer than expected."
Jasper stared at her.
"Who are you?"
Then softly she responded
"Ava."
The name struck him like electricity as more fragmented memories burst through his skull violently with training rooms which had blue lights and a little girl laughing and screaming. He staggered hard as Stacy grabbed him immediately.
"Jasper!"
Ava's expression shifted slightly as synchronization instability was detected.
Mercer looked exhausted already.
"I miss when people just said 'you okay?'"
The hum inside Jasper's mind intensified harder than ever before but now instead of resisting it, he started understanding it. The underground systems no longer felt random as he could sense movement through tunnel grids including power fluctuations, security doors and hostile positioning. Like the facility itself existed inside his thoughts and terrifyingly he adapted so fast.
The Helix operatives advanced through the upper corridor slowed slightly repositioning and flanking. Jasper saw it immediately.
"They're herding us toward the lower shaft exits."
Kane blinked sharply.
"How do you know that?"
Jasper pointed instantly.
"Three units already repositioned behind cover there. The Titan's forcing center pressure."
Mercer squinted.
"…He's right."
The realization spread quietly that Jasperenwasn't guessing anymore. His sister observed him silently with blue eyes analyzing constantly.
"You're adapting faster now."
Stacy stepped between them slightly.
"What are you?"
Ava tilted her head.
"Alive."
That answer somehow felt deeply unsettling.
The scientist stared at Ava like he'd seen a ghost.
"You survived…"
She looked toward him calmly.
"Yes."
His breathing became uneven.
"We shut the chambers down."
"You tried." Ava said
The Helix Titan smashed another Gen-One unit into the walls violently and the defensive line was collapsing fast. More white-eyed Helix operatives flooded into the corridor every second and deeper below—More movement echoed upward from the shaft systems and thousands of sleeping things underground were waiting.
That was the real change, the fear inside him wasn't disappearing but it no longer controlled him first. He saw systems now and suddenly— Leadership became strategy instead of instinct. Jasper looked toward the vertical shaft platform an then toward the collapsing tunnels and then toward the Helix advancing.
"We split their movement."
Kane frowned.
"How?"
Jasper pointed sharply.
"Gen-One units hold upper corridor."
Toward Mercer.
"You take survivors down the maintenance lift."
Toward Stacy.
"You stay center."
Mercer blinked.
"Wow. Bossy upgrade."
She stepped closer carefully.
"You already thought all that through?"
Jasper hesitated briefly and then he answered
"Yes."
There was a pause and then
"…Too fast." He said
That frightened him and Stacy saw it immediately because part of him liked it.
Director Seraph's voice suddenly echoed through the underground systems again.
"Fascinating."
The Helix operatives immediately altered formation fast now. They were adapting to Jasper, it was more of intelligence fighting intelligence, prediction versus adaptation, the systems evolving against each other underground and Jasper stood at the center of it.
"You were always meant to lead them."
Jasper looked sharply at her.
"Them?"
Ava gestured toward the dormant Gen-One units surrounding the chamber.
"The Interface doesn't control systems."
"It connects them." Ava said
The underground map flashed suddenly across nearby wall screens, the entire hidden sectors awakened as blue lights spreading beneath continents. Thousands of inactive Gen-One signatures activated
The survivors stared in horror.
Mercer slowly lowered his shotgun.
"…That's a lot of creepy siblings."
"No."
The word came hard.
"I'm not leading an army."
Ava watched him quietly.
"You already are."
Because every activated Gen-One unit in the chamber was staring at him now, waiting.
The Titan charged again suddenly and this time faster but Jasper moved before it fully accelerated.
"Down!"
Everyone dropped instantly.
The Titan smashed through the exact spot they'd occupied half a second earlier.
Kane stared at Jasper sharply.
"You saw that coming?"
Jasper's eyes flickered blue briefly.
"Yes."
Jasper turned toward the underground shaft systems rapidly.
"Emergency rail below connects to Core transit."
The scientist blinked.
"How do you know that?"
"I can see the layout."
A pause.
"…I think."
The Core was feeding him information now endlessly.
That terrified Stacy most of all and not even the enemies or underground armies. It was the sleep rate at which Jasper was changing as every second connected to the Core made him stronger, smarter and even more dangerous and slightly less human. The Helix forces suddenly stopped advancing.
Jasper noticed immediately.
"They're repositioning."
"For what?"
Then he understood it was too late.
"Snipers."
Three silenced shots cracked through the underground chamber instantly. One Free Men fighter collapsed dead immediately and another survivor screamed as a round tore through her shoulder. The third bullet headed directly toward Stacy as time perceptually slowed. Jasper processed it instantly as he moved before his thought caught up. The bullet struck his shoulder instead as blood exploded across the chamber but he barely reacted instead, he located the sniper position immediately without seeing it.
"Upper vent. Northeast maintenance gap."
Gen-One units launched upward instantly.
Screaming erupted from hidden Helix positions seconds later and everyone stared at Jasper because nobody should've been able to do that.Jasper looked down slowly at the blood spreading across his shoulder and then at the underground systems around him and for the first time the pain felt distant.
Ava watched him carefully.
"You're synchronizing."
Stacy grabbed his face hard.
"Stay with me."
And for one brief second—his human expression returned softly slightly and then suddenly every underground screen flashed violently red.
WARNING: HELIX CORE BREACH DETECTED.
The scientist's face went pale instantly.
"No…"
Kane turned sharply.
"What now?!"
Then the entire underground facility shook violently from something massive which moved far below them. A distorted transmission suddenly hijacked every speaker underground. Then Director Seraph's voice returned and only now, she sounded afraid.
"Impossible…"
The station lights died completely and deep beneath the earth something ancient roared awake, something neither Helix nor Obsidian expected.
Then Jasper whispered one horrifying sentence into the darkness:
"That's not one of ours."
