Hope becomes dangerous when you haven't felt it in too long. The earth was still shaking when they all escaped.
Concrete collapsed behind them in thunderous waves as Jasper led the survivors through ancient maintenance tunnels beneath the Core. Red emergency lights flashed violently overhead as dust choked the air and metal screamed deep underground. And somewhere below them—Nemesis was rising.
"MOVE!" Kane shouted.
The survivors stumbled forward through darkness while the facility collapsed section by section behind them and children cried, people limped as blood streaked the tunnel floors, nobody stopped running because nobody wanted to know what would happen if the thing beneath the earth reached them first.
The emergency hatch exploded open beneath a ruined highway miles away from Obsidian territory as cold night air rushed into the tunnel. Rain hammered the broken surface world above.
The survivors climbed out one by one into the storm looking exhausted, soaked and barely alive. The wasteland stretched endlessly around them again with collapsed cities in the distance. Burning skies beyond the horizon.
The remains of highways twisting through dead forests as the apocalypse felt smaller now somehow because after seeing Nemesis—Even the end of the world no longer looked like the worst thing possible. The group moved silently through the storm and no one wanted to discuss the underground not ye not the Gen-One army, not even Helix or the giant thing rising beneath the earth and definitely not the voice that had spoken directly to Jasper.
We remember you and that sentence still echoed inside his skull. Rain slid down his face while he walked ahead of the group. Signals still flickered at the edge of his thoughts constantly now with pieces of broken transmissions.
Fragments of old-world systems awoke across the wasteland as the Core connection hadn't faded but had grown stronger and he hated how natural it was beginning to feel.
"You okay?"
The question pulled him back slightly and he looked toward her with tired eyes and concern hidden beneath exhaustion.
"No."
For once she appreciated that answer more than reassurance because nobody was okay anymore. By dawn the storm finally weakened and the survivors stopped briefly near the ruins of a collapsed fuel station. People rested against broken concrete barriers, some slept of immediately while others just stared blankly at the gray wasteland.
Mercer sat heavily beside an overturned truck.
"You know…"
He rubbed mud from his face.
"…I really thought giant underground apocalypse monsters would be my limit."
Kane snorted weakly.
"And yet here you are."
"Unfortunately."
Even exhausted laughter sounded fragile now. Three kilometers northeast, far ridge there seemed to be some certain kind of movements that watched and Jasper noticed it first as his eyes narrowed instantly.
"Get down."
The group reacted immediately now whenever his tone changed, weapons were raised abruptly as children his behind cover.
Kane scanned the ridgeline.
"I don't see anything."
"They're there."
Then slowly, figures appeared along the ridge. About twenty armed survivors stood overlooking the ruined highway as weatherproof armor pieced together from military gear and scavenged equipment and that alone made them dangerous. Their weapons looked maintained as well as the or formation also looked unlike wasteland scavengers—These people looked healthy.
Mercer frowned.
"Well that's concerning."
The armed strangers didn't open fire and didn't threaten either that was the strange part. They simply observed carefully. Then one figure stepped forward slowly, He was tall, had broad-shoulders and wore a heavy dark coat despite the rain, a rifle strapped across his back and when he removed the hood—Jasper froze.
The man looked familiar and harsher, he had a scar.
Stacy noticed Jasper's reaction immediately.
"What is it?"
Jasper's breathing slowed as his eyes locked onto the stranger.
"I know him."
The man stared back from the ridge silently and the. his expression changed both in recognition and disbelief.
"…Jasper?"
That moment it felt as if the world stopped all over again as the survivors exchanged confused looks immediately.
Mercer blinked twice.
"Oh you have GOT to be kidding me."
The stranger descended the ridge slowly now yet still staring at Jasper like he'd seen a ghost.
"You're alive…"
Jasper couldn't move.
Couldn't think properly because buried beneath years of survival and beneath the experiments of running and death. One memory had remained untouched, his brother.
"Elias…"
The name left Jasper's mouth quietly.
Almost uncertain.
The older man stopped a few feet away as rain poured around both of them and suddenly—Elias grabbed him hard pulling him into a brutal embrace.
"You idiot…"
His voice cracked slightly.
"I thought you were dead."
For one dangerous moment—Jasper almost forgot the apocalypse entirely. The connection inside Jasper's head quieted briefly, the systems, the signals and endless pressure all faded beneath something painfully human which was family.
Stacy watched silently nearby with relief mixed with caution because she already knew that nobody survived this long unchanged and especially not the leaders.
Elias's people escorted them through the wasteland by afternoon. The route stayed hidden through canyon ruins and broken highways until finally—The camp appeared.
And it was unlike anything they'd seen, it was an actual settlement and had its walls reinforced with salvaged steel and concrete. They had guard towers, water filteration systems, solar arrays and farms growing beneath patched greenhouse structures with people, dozens of them—including families, children running through muddy pathways as watch patrols rotated properly, it was more like a community. The survivors stared openly because hope had become unfamiliar.
Elias noticed their reactions.
"We built this over six years."
Mercer looked genuinely emotional.
"You have vegetables."
"Some."
"I could cry."
The camp guards remained cautious though especially around Jasper as everal people whispered quietly while watching him and that bothered Stacy immediately.
Inside the command building Anthony studied Jasper carefully like confirming if he was real.
"You disappeared after Blackpoint."
Jasper frowned.
"What?"
"The evacuation."
Anthony leaned forward slowly.
"The explosion seperated us." And there were soldiers who shot me.
Fragments hit Jasper instantly of Anthony disappearing. It was him revisiting the beginning.
"You were there?"
Anthony nodded once.
"I tried getting to you."
Pain crossed his face briefly
"They shot me."
He pulled back part of his coat revealing an old scar near his ribs.
Stacy exchanged a quick glance with Kane because suddenly Jasper's past wasn't abstract anymore, it had witnesses. Anthony became serious again quickly.
"You can stay temporarily."
Jasper noticed that immediately.
"You don't trust outsiders."
"We can't afford to."
There was a pause.
"Especially now."
The atmosphere changed slightly.
Kane leaned forward.
"What happened?"
Anthony's expression hardened instantly.
"People started disappearing."
"At first we thought it was just raiders."
Anthony shook his head slowly.
"But raiders leave bodies."
Stacy frowned.
"So what's taking them?"
Anthony looked toward the walls outside and toward the wasteland beyond.
"We still don't know."
That familiar pressure returned inside Jasper's mind with signals like something was nearby already watching. His eyes shifted toward the camp perimeter instinctively. Then beyond it, into the distant dead forest and for one horrible second—He saw white lights moving between the trees which was Helix.
Jasper stood instantly.
"They found us."
Everyone in the room froze.
Elias frowned sharply.
"Who?"
Before Jasper could answer—Alarms exploded across the camp as sirens screamed through the settlement instantly. People rushed toward defensive positions and children were pulled indoors. Guards raised rifles toward the outer walls and then came heavy gunfire at close range.
The camp shook violently as explosions erupted near the eastern barricades. Smoke rose into the gray sky as screaming spread through the settlement.
A terrified guard burst into the command room.
"They're inside the perimeter!"
Elias grabbed his rifle immediately.
"How many?!"
The guard looked pale.
"Not people…"
Then the power across the entire settlement suddenly died as everything went dark and beyond the walls—Rows of white lights slowly appeared in the forest hundreds of them moved silently toward the camp. Helix had found them but then something even worse happened. Every radio in the settlement activated simultaneously with violent static and through the distortion—A familiar voice echoed softly, it was from Director Seraph
"You brought the Interface directly to them."
Jasper's blood ran cold because she sounded pleased. Then from somewhere deep beneath the camp—something answered her which was low mechanical roar coming from underground.
And Anthony whispered one terrified sentence:
"…What did you bring here?"
