Chapter 14 - Alone In The Ashes

Jasper survived the soldiers but out here, alone in the ashes…there was nothing left to fight except himself. The world went quiet again, too quiet with no gunfire or voices or even a single movement. Just the wind dragging ash across the ground like ghosts that refused to rest. Jasper kept walking but slower now and something worse which was the weight that he was carrying inside

Every step echoed louder than it should, the crunch, the ash and gravel. It filled the space where sound used to be. Where people used to be and life used to exist. Jasper's eyes moved out of habit scanning, calculating and measuring but there was nothing to calculate anymore and nothing immediate to react to and that was dangerous because when survival paused…thoughts took over. Stacy's face hit him without warning. Her voice was alive and clear

"Jasper…"

He stopped mid-step like something had physically pulled him back his jaw tightened and his eyes shut briefly, no, not now. He exhaled slowly and opened his eyes and then started walking again faster As if speed could outrun memory. Anthony's voice came next laughing and confident.

"Man, you always think too much."

Jasper's pace slowed again.

His breathing shifted slightly and quite unsteady and just for a second and then controlled again. He looked around and there was nothing and no one, just vast emptiness but it didn't feel empty anymore. It felt crowded. The land ahead was burned flat with charred earth and blackened debris the fragments of things that used to matter. Houses reduced to outlines, vehicles melted into shapes that didn't make sense anymore, everything was broken and everything was finished and for the first time, Jasper didn't just see it he felt it. He slowed and then stopped completely and no threat was forced or danger demanded it. This time he chose to stop and the moment he did, It hit him. His breathing deepened and then broke his rhythm completely, hands clenched slowly and then harder, his chest rose sharply again and again and then suddenly he couldn't control it anymore. A sound escaped him, low like something in between, Something pulled from a place he had been suppressing since the world ended.

The calls that didn't connect, Stacy not answering and Anthony gone. The bodies in the streets and the people he walked past, the man begging for waters and the boy asking what to do. The soldiers pulling the trigger without hesitation. All of it at once, there was no escape. Jasper dropped to his knees from the overload as his hands pressed into the ash-covered ground and his head lowered, his breathing was uneven, sharp and uncontrolled. For the first time since it all began…Jasper wasn't surviving, he was breaking.

"Why?"

The word came out barely audible but it carried everything. Why them? Why now? Why this? Why him?

Why was he still here when everything else was gone?

There was no answer and that was the worst part. His head snapped up suddenly and his eyes were sharp and wide as anger surged through the cracks left by grief. His fist slammed into the ground, once, twice and agian. Ash scattered into the air in a useless and meaningless manner but he kept going because it was something and something he could control. His movements slowed and stopped as his hands stayed pressed into the ground.l and slowly the anger faded. Leaving something colder behind. The realization settled in fully now as truth. The world didn't end for a reason because there was no fairness or justice, just alance. People didn't survive because they deserved to. They survived because they could or because they got lucky and Jasper was still here.

His breathing steadied now slowly and controlled gain. He pushed himself up slightly, still on his knees but more stronger and more stable. The storm inside him didn't disappear but it changed from chaos to weight. Something he could carry.

Stacy's memory refused to leave again, it was different this time more like a memory, calm and steady. looking at him like she always did, like she believed in something he didn't fully understand. Jasper's eyes focused.l on what it meant that she wasn't there. Maybe, Maybe not he didn't know but the idea of her did something to him, it grounded him emotionally because now survival had direction again.

"If she's alive…"

He didn't finish it.

Didn't need to.

Because the rest followed naturally, to find her.

Jasper stood up slowly fully this time his body was much steadier and his breathing controlled, his eyes were different and less empty more focused and fully intentional. The breakdown didn't destroy him. It refined him. He looked around again, same destruction, semptiness but now It wasn't overwhelming. He treated it like an information, the terrace and space as an opportunity. And then he spoke again quietly but firmly.

"I move forward."

As Jasper started walking again, this time, there was purpose behind it not just an escape or survival, it was a direction to find Stacy and Anthony or find the truth. As he moved forward, a figure appeared in the distance, standing still and watching him Jasper slowed slightly ready for what was ahead because breakdown or not the world didn't pause and neither could he. Alone in the ashes, Jasper didn't lose himself. He faced the part of him that was breaking… and decided what was worth carrying forward because survival wasn't just about staying alive anymore.

It was about choosing what kind of person walked through the end of the world and as he stepped out of the silence and toward whatever came next, one thing was clear: He wasn't just surviving the ashes anymore he was rising from them.
