Chapter 13 - Borders of Fear

Jasper thought the world had collapsed until he found the men still trying to control it. The air even changed before the danger appeared. Jasper felt it, the kind that didn't belong in a dead world. He slowed instinctively. Lowered his profile as he moved along a broken stretch of road cutting through a wide, open plain. His eyes narrowed as he scanned and Listened and then he saw it. Vehicles, military that was positioned across the road ahead like a wall, armored trucks, barricades and metal spikes with lots of armed soldiers organized and much alive. Jasper stopped instantly and dropped low behind a ridge of dirt as he watched and measured he figured out that it asn't chaos but structure and that meant power. They were at least eight soldiers quite disciplined with their weapons ready, they didn't panic but looked controlled and disciplined and one stood slightly forward giving orders. Jasper focused on the leader observing his body language, authority and confidence he sensed that the danger level as high. A civilian approached the checkpoint with his ands raised desperate. Jasper shifted slightly to get a clearer view. The man was talking pleading but he was too far to hear the words but the tone was obvious that he was actually begging. The soldier in front didn't respond immediately, he just watched him and then raised his weapon slightly. Jasper's eyes hardened because he lready knew what was coming.

Gunfire cracked through the open air, sharply and the civilian dropped instantly without hesitation or mercy. These weren't rescuers he thought and the weren't protecting people either rather they were controlling territory and anyone outside their control was a threat or considered irrelevant which meant one thing tha Jasper was a target the moment he stepped into view. He stayed still and watched everything. Two soldiers on the left flank, two on the right and three near the vehicles with one leader in front, there weapons were standard military rifles which was deadly in an open terrain and no cover if exposed he concluded that direct approach meant death Another figure approached from the opposite direction, it was a woman holding something like food and offering it, she seemed to be trading it trying to survive. Jasper leaned slightly forward, watching closely now this time the soldiers didn't shoot immediately but they took the food and spoke briefly and then pointed, directed her away, they allowed her passage as Jasper's mind processed it instantly he thought of submission. The value placed on exchange which was obedience.

Those who offered something had a chance but those who didn't had none This wasn't protection, it was control through fear. For the first time in hours, Jasper hesitated because this changed things. He could avoid them, tay invisible and continue alone or he could engage, learn adapt faster but risk everything. Just then, one of the soldiers turned suddenly scanning the ridge toward Jasper his eyes sharp and too alert, immediately Jasper froze completely and his breathing slowed but his body was still, and invisible as seconds passed. The soldier looked away and dismissed it but not fully, in silence and control this wasn't the fight to take not yet but it was a lesson a critical one. As he moved further along the ridge he saw more markers, flags and signs of territory. These soldiers weren't isolated, they were part of something larger more of a controlled zone, expanding and claiming land which meant that the orld wasn't just collapsing but was being rebuilt by force.

A voice was heard from behind him

"Stop."

Jasper turned instantly and saw two soldiers much closer than expected with weapons raised, locked on him with no escape distance and cover cover.

"Hands where I can see them," one soldier ordered.

Jasper raised his hands slowly in a controlled but not submissive manner, his eyes moved quickly.

"Where are you coming from?" the second soldier asked.

Jasper didn't answer immediately but measured his response.

"Passing through."

Wrong answer.

The first soldier stepped closer.

"No one passes through."

Jasper thought of a wrong move and everything ends but Jasper wasn't the same man anymore. He say everything, the gap and angle and timing and in that split second he made a decision. Jasper moved really fast and he grabbed the barrel of the nearest rifle and redirected it as he forced it downward, a shot was fired into the ground and there was chaos before the second soldier reacted Jasper struck really hard and direct, disabling with precision with no wasted motion or hesitation. The second soldier dropped and the first stumbled back disoriented, Jasper didn't finish them and he idn't stay either he ran. Gunfire erupted behind him with shouts and commands.

"Stop him!"

"Take him down!"

Jasper sprinted across the uneven terrain very fast and unpredictable bullets tore through the air around him. He changed direction suddenly, cutting left and then right, using terrain, breaking line of sight and then forcing them to adjust while slowing their aim. Jasper dove behind a rock formation, rolled, got up and kept moving. The gunfire faded gradually an as the sistance grew, voices faded and then silence again. Jasper didn't stop immediately, he didn't trust it, he kept moving until his body forced him to slow donwn and then he stopped.

His chest rose and fell steadily as he looked back once, just once not at the soldiers but what they represented. This wasn't just survival anymore. It wasn't just avoiding death and for the first time Jasper had fought back out of necessity. He looked at his hands again and they were steady, capable and dangerous and now he knew something he didn't before that he could take on more than just the environment and that he could face people, armed people and survive. The world didn't belong to the weak anymore. It didn't belong to the desperate. It belonged to those who could take it or move through it without being caught and as Jasper disappeared deeper into the unknown one truth followed him like a shadow, that the end of the world didn't erase power. It reshaped it and sooner or later he would have to decide… if he was going to keep running from it or become part of it.
