Chapter 15 - The Cave Of Silence

Jasper didn't run from the world, he disappeared from it… because silence was the only place left where he could still think. The figure in the distance didn't move and neither did Jasper. For a long second, they just stood there watching and measuring. Two survivors, two unknowns, two potential threats or two decisions waiting to happen.

Jasper stepped back first not because he was afraid but because he thought he could handle it and to him distance meant he had options and options meant survival. The figure didn't follow and didn't speak to him or even reacted. It Just stood there too still. Jasper didn't like that, Stillness like that meant patience and patience meant danger. Jasper turned and walked away because whatever that figure was, It wasn't worth the risk not now and not when his mind was still recovering or still adjusting and rebuilding.

The land changed again as he moved, now it was less open and more broken. Rock formations were rising unevenly from the earth, Jagged, and sharp with natural cover. Better than the open ash fields. Jasper's pace slowed slightly as his eyes scanned the environment searching for something specific now like an isolation. He found it by accident, there was a narrow opening between two large rock faces, it was large and deep. Hidden from an open view, a cave. Jasper stopped at the entrance, studied it and listened and there was no sound but caves weren't safe. They were unknown and unknown, it could kill you just as easily as anything else. He stood there longer than usual weighing it. If he has to be inside the cave there will be protection, concealment and stillness but outside will require exposure, unpredictability and continuous movement, as his mind runs the scenarios fast. He stepped inside, darkness swallowed him almost immediately as the temperature dropped much cooler. The air didn't move there and there was no ash or sound either. It was like stepping out of the world entirely. Jasper paused just inside and his eyes adjusted shapes formed slowly with rough walls and uneven ground very visible, nothing was living and moving too.

He moved deeper, just enough to disappear from the entrance but close enough to escape if needed. Always leave an exit and always maintain options. He sat down slowly against the stone wall and his back supported him, his front was open as a line of sight toward the entrance was visible. The defensive position, without thinking he had chosen the perfect spot. For the first time in what felt like forever. Jasper didn't move, the stillness was overwhelming. At first, it felt peaceful and then it got louder outside and inside his thoughts came back stronger than before and much clearer than before because now…There was nothing to drown them out.

Jasper leaned his head back against the cold stone and closed his eyes to shut out everything else. Images surfaced again but slower this time not attacking him but waiting and envisioning images of Stacy and Anthony. Fragments of a life that felt distant now. Quite unreal, like something that belonged to someone else. Before, it was:

"Why did this happen?"

Now…

It changed.

"Who am I without them?"

The question sat there, unavoidable.

Jasper opened his eyes suddenly and suddenly because of the answer forming. If they were gone…If everything was gone…Then what was left? Just survival? Just breathing? Was that enough?

He felt it happening again, the pull to shut everything down completely and to remove emotion entirely and to become purely functional, efficient, untouchable and unbreakable. His jaw tightened. His hands clenched slightly because a part of him small but present didn't want that, didn't want to lose everything and didn't want to become nothing but survival. Two versions of him stood in that silence. The one who felt and the one who survived and only one could lead. Jasper sat forward slowly with elbows resting on his knees and his hands clasped. Actually thinking and then he made a decision.

"I won't lose it."

His voice echoed softly in the cave.

"I use it."

Emotion wasn't weakness and attachment wasn't death, they were risk but also direction, meaning and fuel. As Jasper stood slowly, the cave no longer felt like escape. It felt like a checkpoint, A place where something inside him had reset. He walked toward the entrance. Light bleeding in from outside, was quite dim but present. He stopped just before stepping out. Looked back once at the darkness and at the silence and the place where he almost disappeared completely. Because staying would mean hiding without purpose and everything he just rebuilt. Jasper stepped out of the cave and got right back into the broken world but not the same as before, his eyes were sharper and his mind was clearer than it had ever been. He wasn't running anymore. He had already chosen and made his decision.

The cave didn't save Jasper or protect him nor did it change the world outside but inside, It did something far more dangerous. It gave him control over himself and in a world where everything else had collapsed, that was the most powerful weapon he could have but because now Jasper wasn't just surviving the end of the world. He was becoming something the end of the world couldn't break.
