Chapter 42 - Nova Arc 2 - The Weight of Ambition

[Crimson Citadel]

Elarion and Rhyzok sat stiffly on chairs fashioned from the cured hides of great beasts, their spiritual forms feeling alien in the heart of the demonic stronghold. Across from them, Xyne leaned back with a casual confidence that neither of them could match.

"Who was that girl?" Xyne asked, glancing toward the doorway where the young demon had just vanished.

"That's my sister, Elara," Ryvex answered, taking a seat beside Xyne.

"She tried to eat us," Rhyzok muttered, his energy pulsing with a nervous tremor.

Xyne chuckled, waving a hand dismissively. "Calm down, guys. It's not actually possible for her to eat a spiritual being."

"Actually," Ryvex interjected, his expression turning serious, "it is."

Elarion and Rhyzok exchanged a look of pure dread. "Okay," Elarion said quickly, "I don't want to know how. Xyne, what are we even doing here? We can't just sit in a demon's living room forever."

Xyne adjusted her position, her eyes tracking the flickering shadows of the room. "Well, I'm staying with Ryvex for a while. There's a lot to prepare for before the ceremony. But what about you two? Is there anything you actually want to achieve while we're here?"

Rhyzok leaned in and whispered something into Elarion's ear. Elarion nodded, a look of grim determination settling over his face. He looked at Ryvex. "I want to get stronger. I want to reach the rank of the Harbingers."

Ryvex stared at him for a long moment, his gaze unblinking. "If that's what you want, fine. But your energy is far too weak. As you are now, you wouldn't survive the first trial of the Rankspire."

Elarion sighed, shifting to the edge of his seat. "Then tell me. How do I become strong enough?"

"What about your friend?" Ryvex asked, nodding toward Rhyzok. "Doesn't he want the same?"

"No," Rhyzok said immediately. "I'm perfectly happy with my life exactly as it is."

Before the conversation could continue, Elara stomped back into the room. She marched straight up to Rhyzok and leaned in close, her glowing eyes wide with curiosity. "What's your name?"

"Rhyzok," he answered, his form flickering.

Elara smiled, a sharp, predatory expression. She reached out, stopping just short of his translucent skin. "Can I touch you?"

Rhyzok hesitated, then focused his will, turning his hand into solid physical matter. The moment he did, Elara grabbed his hand and began dragging him out of the room. "Come on! I want to show you something!"

Ryvex shook his head as they disappeared down the hallway. He turned back to Elarion. "So, you want the truth about getting stronger?"

"Yes," Elarion said, his voice steady.

"To gain massive amounts of energy quickly," Ryvex said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous register, "you have to consume the essence of other Spiritual Beings. You take their energy and make it your own."

Elarion blinked, his form recoiling. "I don't understand. You mean... kill them?"

"If you want to reach the top, you do whatever is necessary," Ryvex replied. "You can stay weak forever, or you can become a god. You could start with your friend, Rhyzok. If you were to consume the essence of just six Spiritual Beings, you would have enough raw power to challenge a Harbinger."

Elarion looked at Xyne, his eyes wide with shock. Xyne broke the silence, her gaze fixed on Ryvex. "Are you sure there's no other way?"

Ryvex stood up, his aura flaring slightly. "None. So, Elarion... do you want to start, or not?"

[The Hollowroot Forest - En Route to Astravon]

The carriage rumbled along a path of ancient stone, pulled by a team of low-rank beasts. Inside, Nova sat by the window, her gaze fixed on the strange landscape passing by. Kaelvyr sat opposite her, cradling the sleeping Astra in his arms.

Nova pushed aside the beast-hide curtain, looking out at the twisted, glowing trees. "It's so quiet here," she whispered. "I'm guessing this isn't your first pilgrimage, Kaelvyr?"

"Hardly," Kaelvyr replied, his voice a low hum. "I've seen the rise and fall of nations across Orynx."

"Where are we now?"

"The Hollowroot Forest," Kaelvyr said, gently petting Astra's head. "It's the final stretch before we reach the borders of the Astravon Empire. Why? Are you scared?"

Nova gave him a sharp look. "No. But the energy here... it's purple. It feels different from the rest of Orynx." She looked back out the window. "If we Spiritual Beings are the creators of all life here, then why does this forest feel like it belongs to something else?"

Kaelvyr smiled. "You have a mind for mysteries, Nova. But for now, let's focus on the journey. Look, Astra is waking up."

Astra's eyes fluttered open—pure, brilliant white orbs. She giggled and began to climb onto Kaelvyr's shoulder, tugging at his hair. Nova watched them, a sudden warmth filling her chest. She focused her will, and in a flash of intense violet light, she manifested a physical body.

Her hair was a slick, deep blue, her skin glowing with a healthy, stone-like resilience that was surprisingly soft to the touch. She reached out and took Astra from Kaelvyr, cradling the child against her solid form. Kaelvyr stared at her, his eyes wide with shock at the beautiful, physical woman standing before him.

"Nova... what are you doing?" he managed to ask.

Nova smiled, her physical voice sounding rich and resonant. "Calm down. I have more than enough energy to sustain this for a while. I just wanted to feel her... to hold her properly."

She held Astra for a moment before handing her back to Kaelvyr. In another flash, she dissolved back into her shimmering spiritual form. Kaelvyr sat in silence for a moment, the word *beautiful* echoing in his mind.

Nova turned back to the window. she reached out her hand, packing a small amount of spiritual energy into a delicate, star-shaped snowflake. She turned it into physical matter and brought it inside. "Kaelvyr, can I borrow a tiny bit of your energy?"

"For what?"

"Please," she insisted.

Kaelvyr sighed and released a spark of his Holy Energy. Nova touched it to the physical snowflake, and *boom*—it exploded into a shower of glowing light, like falling snow inside the carriage. Nova laughed, her eyes bright. "I can create things! Real, physical things!"

Kaelvyr watched her, a sense of wonder growing in his heart. *She's doing the impossible as if it were a game,* he thought.

The forest began to thin, replaced by a road of smooth, blue stone that glowed under the carriage wheels. The sounds of a bustling civilization began to drift through the air.

"We're here," Kaelvyr said.

The carriage slowed to a halt before a massive, golden gate. A beast-guard opened the window, his eyes widening as he saw Kaelvyr and the shimmering girl beside him. He immediately bowed his head.

"You must be the new Spiritual Origin," the guard said, his voice full of awe. He turned to the gate and shouted, "Let them in! The Origins have arrived!"

The gates groaned open, and the carriage began to move again, entering the heart of the Astravon Empire.
