Chapter 41 - Nova Arc 2 - The Crimson Citadel 2

[Crimson Citadel - The Demon Highlands]

As the massive gates of the Crimson Citadel groaned shut behind them, Elarion and Rhyzok felt the weight of the demonic realm descend upon their spiritual forms. The atmosphere here was unlike anything they had ever experienced. It was thick with the scent of iron and ozone, a heavy, blood-red mist of demonic energy clinging to every surface. The buildings were jagged and imposing, constructed from dark stone and reinforced with the obsidian scales of fallen beasts.

Demons of all shapes and sizes paused in their work, their glowing eyes following the trio with a mixture of curiosity and predatory intent. They had never seen Spiritual Beings walk so openly in their territory.

"I don't think we're supposed to be here, Xyne," Rhyzok whispered, his form flickering with a nervous, translucent light. "The energy here... it's corrosive."

Xyne didn't break her stride, her expression calm and authoritative. "Relax, Rhyzok. It's normal to feel that way. This is a demon's home—mostly Specter-rank warriors. They know better than to touch you while I'm here."

She gestured toward a jagged hill in the distance. Atop its peak sat a massive, castle-like structure that seemed to grow out of the very rock. "That's where we're going."

Suddenly, a black-feathered arrow hissed through the air, aimed directly at Elarion's head. Before he could even blink, Xyne's hand shot out, catching the projectile mid-air. She didn't drop it; she crushed the shaft in her grip, her eyes narrowing as several demons began to emerge from the shadows of the nearby buildings.

"Xyne," Elarion said, his voice trembling. "Maybe we should just go."

Xyne didn't answer. Instead, her body began to undergo a violent transformation. Hard, red scales erupted along her right arm, her fingers lengthening into razor-sharp claws. Her eyes shifted, the pupils turning into vertical slits of burning crimson. She stood tall, her aura flaring with a dangerous heat.

"How dare you attack without knowing who you face!" she roared.

**BOOM.**

A sudden, catastrophic pressure slammed into the area. It was so massive, so absolute, that Elarion and Rhyzok were instantly knocked unconscious, their forms collapsing to the ground. Even Xyne was forced to her knees, her breath hitching as her lungs struggled against the weight of the aura. *What the hell is this?!* she thought, her vision blurring.

The demons who had been stalking them immediately threw themselves to the ground, bowing in terror. Xyne forced her head up, her gaze landing on a figure walking slowly toward her.

"What is your name?" the figure asked, his voice a cold, resonant echo.

"Xyne," she managed to gasp out.

The figure stopped a few feet away, his presence so intense it felt like standing before a collapsing star. "You know Spiritual Beings are not welcome here," he said, his gaze drifting to the unconscious Elarion.

Before Xyne could respond, a boy came running out of the castle atop the hill, his face lighting up with excitement. "Zarek! You're back! I knew I felt your presence!"

The figure, Zarek, turned his gaze toward the boy. "Take care of your guests, Ryvex. I must depart again. If I stay here any longer, these fragile spirits will simply cease to exist."

Without another word, Zarek vanished, the crushing pressure lifting as quickly as it had arrived.

Ryvex turned his attention to the cowering demons in the shadows and gave a sharp hand signal. They vanished instantly, retreating back into the darkness. He then looked at Xyne and offered a wide grin. "Xyne! What are you doing here?"

Xyne stood up, brushing the dust from her clothes as she looked at the unconscious Elarion and Rhyzok. "Ryvex... I came to see you. I didn't want to miss the ceremony for the Cursed Blades." She looked back at the spot where Zarek had been standing. "Who was that?"

"That's my older brother," Ryvex said, his tone casual. "He holds the rank of the **2nd Harbinger**." He saw the lingering fear in Xyne's eyes and chuckled. "Don't worry. He won't kill you. He's just... intense." He looked at the two Spiritual Beings on the ground. "How are we going to move these two?"

"I'll handle it," Xyne said. "I gave them a purifier before we entered, so the demonic energy won't corrupt them for a while." She channeled a small amount of energy into her hands and carefully lifted their forms, following Ryvex toward the castle.

The interior of the castle was a testament to the family's long and violent history. The walls were lined with rows of ancient swords and suits of armor, each one carrying the weight of countless battles. Xyne looked around in awe as they entered a grand living room, where she gently laid Elarion and Rhyzok on a stone bench.

"Wow," she whispered. "This place is incredible."

"Thanks," Ryvex said. "Come on, let me show you the collection."

They walked down a long, dimly lit hallway. Ryvex pointed to a massive blade hanging on the wall. "That's the **Doom Blade**. It has no energy of its own, but the steel is forged to slice through the toughest beast hides like paper." He then pointed to a sword that seemed to pulse with a low, angry heat. "And that is the **Crimson Blade**. It burns with a literal fury, though it scorches the user every time it's drawn. It belonged to one of our ancestors."

"I'm not usually a fan of weapons," Xyne admitted, "but these are something else. So, which one are you inheriting?"

Ryvex grabbed her hand, his expression turning serious. "Come. I'll show you the real treasure."

They walked deeper into the castle, the hallway growing darker and colder with every step. Finally, Ryvex reached a heavy, iron-bound door. He turned the handle and pushed it open.

Xyne stopped dead in her tracks. The room was divided perfectly in two. One side was bathed in a brilliant, glowing red light, while the other was swallowed by a pitch-black void.

On the dark side sat a set of dual katanas, encased in a specialized sheath that seemed to absorb the very light around it. On the red side sat an identical set, glowing with a fierce, incandescent energy.

"The Cursed Blades," Xyne whispered.

"I'm supposed to inherit both," Ryvex explained. "But my mother is about to give birth again. My new sibling and I will each take one. I'm hoping for the Dark one."

Xyne walked closer, her eyes narrowed. "I have a question, Ryvex. Why can't I sense any energy from them? And I thought the 2nd Harbinger—your brother—was the one who wielded the Dark Blade."

"Oh, he does," Ryvex said, rubbing his chin. "Maybe that's why he came back... to collect it. But wait, why didn't he take it before he left again?"

Xyne's mind raced. *Zarek was emitting an insane amount of Dark Energy, but he wasn't even carrying the blade. How is that possible?* She looked back at the swords. "And my other question? Why is there no aura?"

"The sheaths," Ryvex said simply. "They are designed to seal the energy completely. If you were to remove the blades here, the sudden release would kill your friends instantly. It's a death sentence for anyone nearby."

"You've never drawn them?" Xyne asked.

"Never," Ryvex admitted. "Neither of them."

Suddenly, a panicked shout echoed from the living room. "XYNE! WHERE ARE YOU?!"

Xyne jumped, hitting her head on the low doorway. "Damn! I forgot they were awake!"

She and Ryvex ran back to the living room, where they found Elarion and Rhyzok staring in terror at a young demon girl who was watching them with an awkward, curious expression.

"Oh," the girl said, looking back at Ryvex. "They're your guests? I thought they were lunch." She shrugged and walked out of the room.

Elarion grabbed Xyne's arm, his form still shaking. "Xyne! Where have you been?! And who was that monster outside?!"
