ELARA POV
I slammed the book shut angrily, clenching my hands into fists. I tried my best to act calm as I walked past everyone, making my way to where I needed to be. I stormed off directly there. I needed to see Raya.
She needed to explain herself to me. I had given her my documents, everything, my qualifications, everything. I handed it all to her just to make sure she understood that I do not work with superstitious things or things that do not exist.
Now she brings me a perfectly normal human being, shocks him a few times, and expects me to get scared and start investigating him. What exactly was I supposed to draw out of him? And then to make everything worse, she claimed he was a wolf. Very funny.
This was no child's play. She could not just call me here to deal with something that did not exist. I stood in front of the door with a huge sense of disappointment, straightening my jacket. At this point, I was ready to quit if I had to, just to prove that I do not believe in whatever she was forcing me to do. I did not mind doing it.
I raised my hand to knock, and at that moment, the doorknob turned and opened, leaving me standing in front of Raya as she folded her arms, looking at me.
"Aren't you supposed to be in the lab bringing good results? You don't have much time left, and we urgently need information concerning this creature," she said as I laughed.
I made sure to look around to confirm that nobody was nearby who might overhear.
"Should we talk about this inside? Because at this point, people are going to find out what is going on if I don't get a clear answer," I said to her as she nodded, making way for me.
I stepped in to see files scattered all over her desk and, of course, her huge screen displaying details about this same man. She seemed frustrated, even though she looked so agile, straightforward, and fierce in person. Her office alone told me she was frustrated, like she was trying to find answers so badly. I took my seat and she sat down, her arms always folded as usual, clearly waiting for me to give her a response.
"I know you guys did a huge thing for me," I started as she laughed.
"What? You are too scared to continue?"
"I have been on this case for months, and not once have I feared that man. You are not supposed to be scared of him because he is under maximum security. If he couldn't escape three months ago, he can't escape now," she said as I nodded.
"It's not about him escaping or me being scared. I am not scared of anything at this point. The only problem I have is that I went through the whole file you handed me to sign, which I didn't even get to scroll through at the time. At that point, you could actually have sold me off and I would not have known. So I decided to read it more carefully and found out that I am dealing with a creature named wolf. Come on, Ms. Raya. A wolf? Really? Of all the things in this world, you decided I should deal with something that doesn't exist?" I said as she stayed quiet, not blinking, not saying anything to me.
I couldn't help but wonder what exactly was going through her mind and why she was so quiet.
"So you think you are dealing with something that does not exist?" she questioned as I nodded, holding firmly to my position because this was nothing more than a fairy tale to me.
She laughed so loudly that I suddenly got scared. It seemed like she was pouring out all her frustration in that laughter.
"You think he does not exist? He is right there in front of you. Make him angry and you will see the wolf in him," she said as I shrugged.
"But your guards made him angry. Nothing happened; he was perfectly fine. Why am I the one who has to make him angry? I don't even need to do that. I can clearly see that he is not what you want him to be. He's just a normal human being with weird strength or whatever," I said to her.
She slammed her hand on the desk and suddenly moved so close to me, making sure our gaze was unbreakable as she wore a smirk on her face.
"I really see you are sticking to those words you gave me in your CV, telling me you don't believe in superstitious things and won't work with something like that. Believe me, this is not superstition. You have a time limit; I have a time limit. That is the reason why I brought you into this situation in the first place. That is the main reason why I gave you a second chance when everybody else did not want to. So don't disappoint me. Do something useful before you make me lose my job," she said, then returned to her seat, quickly calming herself, a smile returning to her face.
"So what do you say? Are you doing it or not?" she questioned as I fidgeted with my fingers, not knowing what answer to give her.
But I knew I could not back out just yet. I still had so many things to prove wrong.
"I'll do it. And I'll also prove to you that there's no such thing as a wolf," I said to her, and hoped to keep it that way.
