Chapter 9 - The Weight of A Name

ELARA POV

Hearing his name, I felt like rushing toward the lab to talk to him, to try to understand why exactly he wanted to tell me his name. Why he thought I was the right candidate to not only mind link with him but also to trust with his name, which could be very important information. He knew I was going to feed every detail back to Axiom Biotech. I did not know why he kept telling me things, but I decided I was not going to do anything as reckless as that.

I went back home, but my brain would not settle. His name kept ringing in my head, even though I did not know him from anywhere. I had never seen him before, but I felt like I was connected to him. Something very foolish of me to think. Why would I ever, in my wildest imagination, think that I was connected to a wolf? Very stupid of me. I decided to just let it go and not let it bother me anymore.

But I had to bring positive results if I wanted this case to ever be over. Because I knew I could not simply push it aside without bringing a solution to their problems. And I knew the only way to do it was by being kind to him. After all, I was the first person who had worked at that biotech company who actually knew his name, and I planned to keep it that way. I planned to be the only one he would tell everything to.

The next morning, I was already set and ready in my lab coat as I went straight into the lab to find the guards handcuffing him again. I could see some food on the ground, which clearly meant they were trying to feed him. I stopped in my tracks, looking angry, not because they were handcuffing him again, but because of the way they had thrown the food on the ground. I could tell they were forcing him to eat it like he was a baby, or some kind of dog.

I cleared my throat as one of the guards glanced at me and then looked away.

"Stop it," I said as they paused.

"Do you want him running away again?" they asked me as I laughed.

"He's not running away. If I were in his position and you treated me this way, I swear I would run. Believe me when I say I would actually run away. Why are you doing this to him? Why is there food on the ground?" I asked them as they looked at each other and laughed.

"He is an animal. We fed him the way animals are supposed to be fed," they said as I felt even more enraged, my hands balled into tight fists.

If only I could punch them and still keep my job.

"No, he is not an animal. He is just like you. Just because he was brought in here for an experiment and is speculated to be a beast or whatever you call him, he is still in his human form. At least treat him with dignity. What you're doing is not right. He is a king. Why do you keep forgetting that?" I said to them as they laughed again.

Clearly, they were mocking every word I said. Nobody could understand how I felt at this point.

"He's a king. Lions are also kings of the jungle, and yet we tame them so easily. I don't know why you keep forgetting that you are one of us and not an animal. Yes, you are a renowned veterinary surgeon or whatever you are, but here, you do what the company wants. The company wants him under control, and that is what we are going to do. I hope you understand. If you don't keep him under control, he's going to run away," they said to me.

I grabbed the wrist of one of the guards as I rushed toward him and held on to the one tightening the cuffs even further.

"Stop it. It's enough. Just because he doesn't shout out does not mean it is not painful," I said, flinging his hands away angrily.

"Fine, do whatever you want. If he runs away, you are going to pay with your life," they warned and then stormed off, leaving me alone with him.

"I told you not to come back," he said as I felt frustrated.

"You told me not to come back. I am frustrated coming back here. I actually wanted to take your advice to heart, but I couldn't. Why did you call my name? What do you want from me? I am doing everything and anything possible to make them stop what they are doing to you. But you are pushing me away, claiming I am not supposed to be in your life. I am the only one who can change the perspective of everything they are doing," I said angrily as he laughed.

"No, you can't change anything. You are the one they want. You really think this is the worst of how they torture me? They've done worse, and I bore it all. But knowing that you are going to be in this same company doing the same thing other scientists did? I don't want it," he said as I laughed.

"Your opinion does not matter now. Just let us get through this. Why are you mind linking with me?" I said angrily, but before I could utter another word, he pressed his lips against mine.

Oh my God. At that instant, I felt like pushing him away. But I was tempted. I did not know what was wrong with me. I grasped myself back to reality and pushed him away.

"What was that supposed to be about?" I said, wiping my lips as he smiled.

"I am just unable to stop myself," he said as I laughed, turning around in frustration, running my hands through my hair.

"No. You don't dare do something like that. Why would you? There are cameras in here. You want them to see that you kissed me? You are an animal, for God's sake," I said as he smiled again, always smiling.

"Oh, I'm an animal now, but I am in my human form, and I am not dirty. I am a king. Respect me for that. I only wanted to give you a little glimpse of what it felt like. I think I like having you around me. You don't want to leave? Fine. Stick with me and see what happens when you get involved with the werewolf realm."
