An hour later.
Jude Langley drove back to Waterside Gardens.
Sylvia Sterling had calmed down a lot.
But she still felt bad and, mustering her spirits, said, "I'll treat you to a meal some other day."
Jude Langley parked the car on the side of the road. "Come on, I'll walk you in."
"There's no need."
"Just say I've got time on my hands."
In a rare show of forcefulness, Jude Langley unbuckled his seatbelt.
Sylvia Sterling looked at him, amused. Not wasting any more words, she nodded and got out of the car first.
A few minutes later.
The two of them strolled along the community's walking path.
The autumn sunlight, mixed with a cool breeze, fell gently all around.
Jude Langley discreetly studied Sylvia Sterling's weary features.
He didn't stop until they reached the entrance to her apartment building. Lifting his head, he said, "Go on inside. I'm heading out."
Sylvia Sterling waved without looking back and walked into the building.
