The next day, 7:30 a.m.
Sylvia Sterling had been up all night. After getting out of bed and showering, she planned to go to the kitchen to whip up a simple meal to tide her over.
KNOCK KNOCK—
A knock came from the entryway.
Sylvia peeked through the peephole and saw a delivery driver.
She opened the door, and the driver handed her a food container. "Hello, your breakfast."
Sylvia smiled and said he had the wrong address.
The driver looked at the order, then glanced at the apartment number. "It's not wrong. This is the place. A Mr. Langley ordered it."
Sylvia thanked him, went back into the living room, placed the container on the table, and dialed Jude Langley's number.
He picked up before the third ring.
"I got the breakfast. Thank you."
"Don't mention it." Jude exhaled a puff of smoke. "Take your time eating. I'll pick you up at nine."
Sylvia glanced back at the breakfast container on the table, wanting to say something but holding her tongue.
