Stella Sterling and Mr. Sterling stared at each other, the air utterly silent.
A half-minute later.
Stella sat down beside Mr. Sterling, head bowed, looking as meek as could be.
A strange tension froze the air in the back seat.
Mr. Sterling rubbed his chest, so angry he felt a sharp pain. "Home!"
The driver, Lane, quickly started the engine.
With a cold face, Mr. Sterling gave another order, "Head toward Seastar Road. I want to see just how bad the traffic is."
Stella shifted toward the car door, her head bowed, not daring to make a peep.
Mr. Sterling closed his eyes and took a slow breath, his voice drawn out. "Where were you in the middle of the night?"
Stella mumbled without looking up, "I was hungry. I went to the snack street to get something to eat."
"And the food you bought?"
"I... ate it on the way..."
Mr. Sterling shot her a dark, sideways glance.
