Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: I'll Take Care of It

Outside the manor, reporters clamoring for an interview also blocked the gates.

Megan Kane rubbed her temples, her expression grim. The incident at the construction site was causing a massive uproar.

And now, she couldn't even get home.

The old butler sighed. Just as he was about to drive away, a heavy object slammed into the car window.

Before he could even react, the engine died.

The people outside were pounding on the windows and yanking hard on the door handles.

Megan Kane frowned. "Can you really not get the car started?"

'She didn't know what this group of people wanted, but they definitely weren't ordinary reporters.'

'Otherwise, they wouldn't have rushed to the manor's specific location.'

Rowan Monroe frowned, her heart hammering in her chest.

'She didn't know what the people outside wanted, but judging by their enraged expressions, they looked like they had completely lost their minds.'

Both women simultaneously looked toward the butler, who was still trying to start the car.

Before the butler could react, someone clambered onto the hood of the car.

"Get out of the car, now! Nobody's leaving until you explain what happened today!"

"Yeah! So many people died, and you're just raking in blood money! Do you have any conscience? How can you even sleep at night?"

The people outside had been sent by a rival company. They brought reporters with them, and their sole purpose today was to cause trouble.

Jason Forrester had already been taken in; otherwise, they never would have dared to storm the manor so brazenly.

"I'll go out and deal with them." Megan Kane pushed the car door open, but Rowan Monroe grabbed her wrist in a death grip.

"Are you crazy? You still want to go out there? Look at their faces! Do they look sane to you?"

"It's obvious our rivals sent them here just to cause a scene."

Rowan just felt that something unimaginable would happen if they got out. 'Why not just hide in the car?'

"But the car won't hold out for long if they keep pounding and smashing it like this." Before Megan Kane could finish, the old butler cut her off.

The old butler cleared his throat. "Actually, you can rest assured. The glass is bulletproof; it won't break."

The old butler figured they could pound on the car until their hands were raw and still not get it open an inch.

But the curses from outside were incessant. This couldn't go on forever; it wasn't a solution.

'Were they supposed to just sit here and have a standoff with them?'

Before Megan Kane could even collect her thoughts, the mob started trying to flip the car over.

Everyone was terrified. Megan Kane closed her eyes.

But then, the unbelievable happened right before their eyes.

Jason Forrester returned, holding a black umbrella. He pushed through the raucous crowd and came to a stop beside the car.

He had a smile on his face. Megan Kane pushed open the car door, saying nothing.

They both stood there looking at each other, but neither broke the silence.

"I hear you were moving heaven and earth to find me after I was taken in. Did you miss me that much?"

Jason Forrester wore a smile. Though he'd been on the inside, he was perfectly clear on everything that had happened on the outside.

After all, everyone knew that besides Mr. Forrester himself, he was the second-in-command of the Forrester family.

'Without a vast network of connections, how else could he have held his position so securely?'

"It's not like I missed you. You getting taken in had absolutely nothing to do with me."

"And another thing, your family has all these messes. You'd better deal with them quickly."

"Otherwise, don't blame me for ditching you."

Megan Kane's heart was a chaotic mess. She beat a hasty retreat toward the house, unwilling to linger for a second longer.

Rowan Monroe hurried after her best friend, having no desire to be left alone with Jason Forrester.
