Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Crisis

Xie Ning's gaze lingered on the RV. She looked, and then looked again.

She squeezed her mother's hand. "Mom, let's go check it out."

Song You'ai nodded, following her daughter as she ran toward the convenience store.

Coincidentally, the man and woman who had fled the convenience store had drawn away several zombies, allowing the mother and daughter to reach the entrance quite smoothly.

The RV was about five meters long. It looked like it had been reinforced and modified, and its chassis was particularly high.

It had just rammed violently into the convenience store's shattered glass doors, yet its bumper was completely unscathed.

Clearly, the vehicle's quality was top-notch.

Its gas mileage might be terrible, but with a vehicle like this, they could live a bit more comfortably even if they were constantly on the run.

"Mom, be careful. There might be zombies inside. Don't move, just watch me."

Song You'ai nodded. "Be careful, honey."

Xie Ning slowly approached the vehicle, peering inside through the small window on the door.

Suddenly, an old, wrinkled face pressed against the small window, its grayish-white pupils staring right at Xie Ning.

Expressionless, Xie Ning yanked open the RV door. She deftly looped a coarse hemp rope—which she had taken from her Space beforehand—around the elderly zombie's neck.

With a powerful tug, she unceremoniously dragged it out of the RV and slammed it onto the ground.

Song You'ai didn't even see her daughter make a move before a long blade pierced through the back of the elderly zombie's head.

A shiver ran down her spine, and she looked away, unable to watch any longer.

Xie Ning had already moved to the driver's seat at the front.

Through the window, she saw a middle-aged man slumped back in the seat, his head tilted up. A bloody hole had been bitten into the left side of his neck, and blood was still gushing out, flowing down his body.

Xie Ning took a deep breath and closed her eyes for a moment.

She opened the door with one hand, unbuckled the seatbelt, and forcefully dragged the man out of the driver's seat, tossing him to the ground.

Before the man's grayish-white pupils could darken, she plunged her blade into his skull, putting him out of his misery.

Watching from the side, Song You'ai noticed that her daughter's expression was almost numb as she did all this, her demeanor remarkably calm and composed.

She didn't dare say a word, standing by uneasily.

Xie Ning pulled her usual plastic sheet from her Space and spread it over the bloodstained leather seat. She turned and urged her mother, "Mom, just make do with this for now. Let's go get Kexin."

With that, she hopped into the passenger seat and gestured for her mother to drive.

Song You'ai didn't dare to object. She could sense that her daughter was in a bad mood.

The RV turned around and sped toward the small box truck.

Before they even got close, they heard the ragged, guttural shrieks of the undead.

It seemed to be coming from the vicinity of the box truck.

Xie Ning's expression changed. Song You'ai slammed on the brakes, and the RV came to a screeching halt.

"Ningning, look over there."

With Xie Ning's current eyesight, she had, of course, already seen it clearly.

A man and a woman were standing on the hood of the box truck, throwing what little food they had left at the four zombies in front of them.

Things like potato chips and bread bounced off the zombies' heads. The creatures didn't even blink.

The woman shrieked in terror, "Don't come any closer! Don't come any closer!"

It seemed she could only repeat those same few words over and over. The tall, thin young man beside her looked incredibly pale as well.

He was even starting to regret it. 'Why did I turn back to save this stupid woman?'

'Now we're screwed.'

They were completely surrounded by zombies. Their only chance was to desperately scramble up onto the roof of the truck.
