A cage?

I slowly turned to the window, and suddenly, the strange lattice of lines and energy I had glimpsed in the distance made sense. She had put that barrier there. Why?

It was a barrier. A massive one, encasing the entire castle grounds.

I turned and walked toward the entrance without another word.

"Where do you think you're—"

I didn't hear the rest. I didn't want to. His irritation flared hot, but I shoved it aside and reached for the handle.

The door swung open before I could pull it, and Slin stood there.

I stopped, relief flooding through me at the sight of him.

His eyes widened when they landed on my face, and I watched the tension drain from his shoulders. He looked so relieved, so genuinely happy to see me, that something in my chest loosened.

He immediately became more guarded when he glanced at Fashire.

"Where are your manners?" Fashire grumbled.
