I was speechless.

Then the fury came back cold, precise and familiar.

"Who do you think you are?"

She didn't flinch. She didn't even step back. Her chin remained lifted, her eyes still blazing through the drying tears, and that refusal to cower only made the anger burn hotter.

Along with a lingering feeling I refused to acknowledge.

"Where exactly did you get this insolence?" I stared down at her. "This inflated confidence of yours. Do you think your insolence absolves you of punishment? You just did something very foolish."

I tilted my head, studying her. "The King could have easily smite you on the spot for that foolish little display of yours. Walking out of a royal address without permission. A switch must have flipped in your head when you lost that old man. Do you want the same vision for your friend?"

The blow landed. Her expression cracked, just for a heartbeat, before the fury rushed back in to fill the gap.

She laughed.
