I stopped. "What?"
I stared at her, genuinely stunned. I had not seen that question coming. And it was so absurd, so utterly backwards, that for a moment, I couldn't find the words.
"You—"
"Nothing." Her voice cracked on the word. She took a step forward. "I did nothing to you. I committed no crime against you or your people. I understand the deception. I lied about who I was. What I was. I worked in that castle under false pretences. But I was only trying to survive!"
Her chest heaved. "None of it was planned. None of it was deliberate! I came there to work! To earn money for my father's treatments. I schemed against no one. I plotted no one's downfall. I just simply existed! And yet you—" She pressed her lips together, fighting for control. "I—"
"Eno—"
"I am not finished!"
The audacity of her command silenced me.
