Chapter 80 - Chapter 80 – The Junction

The detached carriage disappeared from the map.

Not because it had stopped.

Because it had entered the older tunnels beneath the sea.

The crimson route remained.

A thin line stretching toward the island.

Toward the First Seal.

Kushina stared at the empty space where the carriage had been.

"How far ahead is it?"

Ren's hands moved across the control panel.

The damaged screen flickered.

"Eleven minutes."

Daichi looked toward Renji.

"And how long does he have?"

The number beside the vessel core changed.

Sixty-eight minutes.

Renji leaned against the wall.

White light escaped through the cracks beneath his chest.

"I preferred seventy-three."

Kushina tightened the golden chain supporting him.

"You're still complaining."

"I assume that is encouraging."

"It is."

The main train continued toward the coast.

Too quickly.

Metal screamed beneath them.

The rescued prisoners remained scattered throughout the compartments.

Some slept.

Others sat close together—

hands wrapped around one another.

Their hollow marks were dark now.

But not gone.

Hana remained beside Mika.

Every few seconds—

her fingers moved toward the faded circle on her own neck.

Kushina noticed.

"It's reacting again."

Hana nodded.

"Not to the train."

A pause.

"To the carriage."

Even at this distance—

the vessel seals could feel the echo moving closer to the First Seal.

Kushina closed her eyes.

"Kurama."

A low rumble answered.

"…I am here…"

"You know what happens if the echo reaches the island."

Silence.

The train shook around them.

"Kurama."

His chakra moved behind the seal.

Not retreating.

Thinking.

"…it will search for what remains of itself…"

"The main consciousness?"

"…whatever your clan sealed there…"

His voice became lower.

"…the fragment beneath the sanctuary called itself the Voice…"

A pause.

"…an echo returning to the whole may become more than a voice…"

Kushina opened her eyes.

"And the Bijuu fragments inside Renji?"

Kurama growled.

"…a path…"

Her stomach tightened.

"A path to what?"

"…to us…"

The stolen chakra inside Renji had come from several Bijuu.

Pieces of their power.

Pieces that remembered where they belonged.

If the Voice reached them—

it could follow those memories.

From one fragment—

to the Bijuu it had been torn from.

Kushina looked at Renji.

He had heard none of the conversation.

But the shifting colors beneath his skin had begun moving faster.

As though the fragments already sensed what was waiting ahead.

"You're afraid of it," Kushina whispered.

Kurama's presence surged instantly.

The seal trembled.

"…do not mistake knowledge for fear…"

The words struck with enough force to make her breath catch.

"…fear belongs to those who do not understand what stands before them…"

A pause.

"…I understand it too well…"

Kushina remained silent.

His voice lowered.

No anger now.

Only certainty.

"…I remember what it does when it is given a way inside…"

She felt something beneath the words.

Not fear.

Memory.

The kind that never stopped being dangerous simply because it was old.

Ren called from the control chamber.

"There's a junction ahead."

Kushina moved toward him.

The route map expanded.

Their train continued east toward the underground harbour.

A second line separated from it—

descending beneath the ocean.

The same line carrying the echo.

Minato studied the map.

"Can we switch tracks?"

Ren shook his head.

"Not with this train."

"Why?"

"The containment route is narrower."

Daichi examined the old symbols beside the junction.

"It was never designed for passengers."

"It transported sealed objects," Ren said.

"Chakra samples."

"Artifacts."

A pause.

"Things they didn't want travelling through populated areas."

Kushina looked toward the compartments behind them.

"And we can't bring everyone."

"No."

Silence filled the control chamber.

More than thirty rescued prisoners.

Most of them could barely walk.

The main train could take them to the harbour.

To safety—

or something close to it.

But the echo was already heading toward the First Seal.

Renji would not survive long enough for them to reach the coast and search for another route.

They had to divide.

Again.

Ren looked toward the prisoners.

"I'll take them to the harbour."

Kushina turned toward him.

"You just escaped."

"Yes."

"You can barely stand."

His body still carried the remains of the command seals.

Dark lines surrounded his wrists and throat.

But his eyes were clear.

"My chakra core is stable."

He glanced toward Renji.

"His isn't."

Hana stepped closer.

"The organization may be waiting at the harbour."

"I know the facility."

Ren's voice remained steady.

"And the prisoners know me."

Mika slowly rose from her seat.

"They know us."

Hana looked at her.

"Mika—"

"We can help."

Mika's legs trembled.

Another prisoner supported her.

Kaito stood beside them.

The young boy still appeared exhausted—

but his eyes were his own.

Mika looked toward Kushina.

"You reached us once."

A pause.

"You don't have to carry us forever."

Kushina's chains shifted behind her.

Not appearing.

Almost.

Mika noticed.

"We'll stay together."

"Through the Constellation?" Daichi asked.

"No."

Mika touched the dark circle on her neck.

"By choice."

Kushina looked around the compartment.

The rescued prisoners were frightened.

Wounded.

Some had no idea where they were going.

But none of them looked empty anymore.

They had names.

They had one another.

And for the first time—

Kushina understood that protecting someone did not always mean keeping them beside her.

Sometimes it meant trusting them to keep moving without her.

She looked toward Ren.

"Get them to the harbour."

He nodded.

"Find somewhere defensible."

Another nod.

"And if the researcher is there—"

"I know."

Kushina narrowed her eyes.

"I was going to say don't fight him alone."

Ren almost smiled.

"I know that too."

Minato pointed toward a smaller symbol beside the junction.

"There's another vehicle."

Ren enlarged the map.

A narrow service platform rested between the two tracks.

"Maintenance transport."

Daichi studied its specifications.

"It can carry six people."

Kushina counted without needing to.

Herself.

Minato.

Daichi.

Hana.

Renji.

Five.

The sixth space remained empty.

Ren looked toward her.

"You'll need someone who understands the organization's systems."

"You're staying here."

"I know."

His gaze moved toward the figure lying beside the far wall.

A former prisoner named Sora.

Older than most of the others.

Thin metal seals covered his fingers.

"He maintained the lower transport lines."

Sora slowly lifted his head.

"They made me repair them."

His voice was hoarse.

"I know the old routes."

Kushina looked at his injuries.

"You're in no condition to travel."

"Neither is anyone going."

Renji opened one eye.

"I believe that was directed at me."

"It was directed at all of us."

Sora attempted to stand.

His legs immediately failed.

Mika caught him.

He shook his head.

"I can guide you from here."

Ren looked toward the control system.

"The trains share a communication seal."

"For how long?" Minato asked.

"Until the underwater barrier separates the routes."

Sora pointed toward a cluster of symbols.

"I can open the first three junction locks remotely."

"And the rest?" Kushina asked.

His expression tightened.

"The old line decides whether you belong there."

"That sounds familiar."

"The First Seal was built to reject unauthorized chakra."

Daichi looked toward Kushina, Hana and Renji.

"They carry every signature."

"Yes," Sora said.

A pause.

"That may be the problem."

The train alarm changed.

One long tone.

The junction was approaching.

The route map showed two white lines moving toward a central point.

Their train.

The maintenance platform.

They had less than four minutes.

Daichi opened his pack.

"We stabilize Renji before transferring."

Kushina looked toward the countdown.

Sixty-two minutes.

"We don't have time."

"We will have less if his core breaks while changing vehicles."

Renji pushed himself away from the wall.

"I can walk."

Kushina's chain caught him before his first step ended.

"You lasted longer that time."

He glared at her.

"Release me."

"No."

"I am not entering the First Seal suspended from a chain."

"You may not get a choice."

"That seems inconsistent with your philosophy."

Hana covered her mouth.

Kushina looked toward her.

"Are you laughing?"

"No."

"You are."

"It was a little funny."

Daichi placed three stabilizing tags across Renji's chest.

The white light dimmed slightly.

Not healing.

Slowing.

Minato examined the seals.

"How long will they hold?"

"Twenty minutes."

"That's not enough."

"It is what we have."

Renji looked down at the formulas.

"And after twenty minutes?"

Daichi did not answer.

Renji's expression remained calm.

But the chain connecting him to Kushina carried the truth.

His pulse had changed.

Faster.

He was frightened.

Not of the Voice.

Of time.

The train entered a wider tunnel.

Three sets of rails appeared beneath them.

Metal platforms rushed past the windows.

The junction.

Ren moved to the controls.

"I can slow us for thirty seconds."

"Only thirty?" Kushina asked.

"The system does not want us stopping."

"Then make it want something else."

Ren looked at Minato.

"I understand why she threatens buildings now."

Minato nodded.

"It happens frequently."

Ren pressed both palms against the panel.

His chakra entered the system.

The remains of the command seals across his arms glowed.

The train rejected him.

"Subject authority denied."

His jaw tightened.

"Ren Uzumaki."

The controls flickered.

"Secondary identity recognized."

The brakes activated.

The train screamed.

Every compartment shook violently.

Kushina's chains spread through the carriages—

holding the prisoners in place.

The maintenance platform appeared beside them.

Small.

Open.

Barely more than a metal carriage surrounded by seal barriers.

The train doors opened.

Wind tore through the compartment.

The rails moved beneath them.

Not slowly enough.

Minato stepped to the edge.

"I'll go first."

He vanished.

A moment later—

he appeared on the maintenance platform.

A yellow seal flashed beneath his hand.

"Stable."

Daichi crossed next.

Then Hana.

The mark on her neck ignited the moment she stepped toward the second track.

She gasped.

Kushina caught her waist with a chain.

"Hana!"

"I'm fine."

The crimson circle continued glowing.

"It can feel us changing routes."

Renji stood at the open door.

The maintenance platform rushed beside the train.

His face had become almost colorless.

Kushina wrapped a chain around his waist.

He looked down at it.

"Do not throw me."

"I wasn't planning to."

A pause.

"Minato will catch you."

"That is throwing me."

The train shook.

Ten seconds remained.

Kushina smiled faintly.

"Try not to be difficult."

"I learned from you."

She pulled.

Renji left the train.

For one second—

his artificial body hung above the rushing tracks.

Then Minato caught him on the other side.

The impact sent both of them against the platform wall.

The core flashed violently.

White light filled the junction.

Every rail seal reacted.

A deep mechanism awakened beneath them.

The Voice whispered through the metal.

"Body."

Renji screamed.

The stolen fragments surged beneath his skin.

Blue flame burst across the platform.

Gold struck the barrier.

Purple chakra crawled through the floor.

Hana grabbed Renji's hand.

"Stay here."

His mismatched eye turned black.

The maintenance platform began pulling toward the underwater track.

Too early.

Kushina remained on the main train.

"Kushina!" Minato shouted.

The distance between the vehicles widened.

Daichi threw a seal tag toward her.

It landed against the train door.

A yellow formula appeared.

Kushina grabbed the inheritance scroll.

Then turned toward Ren.

The rescued prisoners stood behind him.

Mika.

Kaito.

Sora.

Dozens of people who had been numbers only hours ago.

Ren held the control panel with both hands.

Blood ran from the seals across his wrists.

"Go."

Kushina hesitated.

Not because she doubted him.

Because leaving felt too much like abandoning them.

Ren saw it.

"We chose this."

The words reached deeper than he knew.

The Voice pressed through the rails.

The hollow marks across the prisoners' necks flickered.

Only once.

Mika caught Kaito's hand.

Sora reached for the person beside him.

The marks darkened again.

They held one another.

Without Kushina.

The junction had almost passed.

"Bring them back," Ren said.

Kushina looked toward Hana and Renji.

Then at Minato and Daichi.

"All of them."

Ren nodded.

"All of them."

Kushina stepped onto Minato's seal.

Yellow light pulled her across the gap.

She appeared on the maintenance platform as the main train accelerated away.

The doors closed behind Ren.

For a moment—

Kushina could still see them through the windows.

Mika lifted one hand.

Kaito did the same.

Then the train disappeared toward the harbour.

The maintenance platform entered the second track.

Steel barriers rose behind them.

The route to the coast vanished.

Only the downward tunnel remained.

Dark.

Narrow.

Leading beneath the sea.

The Voice's carriage was somewhere ahead.

Waiting at the end of the line.

Hana remained beside Renji.

His body shook beneath her hands.

The blackness slowly left his eye.

He looked toward the tunnel.

"I heard it."

Kushina knelt beside him.

"The Voice?"

"No."

A pause.

"The fragments."

Kurama became still inside her.

"What did they say?"

Renji struggled to breathe.

"Not words."

The same answer Hana had given before.

"What, then?"

His fingers pressed against the cracked core.

"They want to go home."

Kurama's growl filled Kushina's mind.

"…they do not know what home means…"

She closed her eyes.

"You do."

"…yes…"

"Then help them."

His chakra shifted.

"…they are pieces…"

"They're pieces of your siblings."

"…I know…"

"Then stop acting as though knowing makes you separate from this."

Silence.

The platform descended faster.

Kushina found Kurama behind the bars.

He stood now.

His enormous form filled the darkness.

Tails raised.

Eyes fixed on her.

"You said you understand the Voice."

"…I do…"

"Then tell me what it wants from the fragments."

Kurama's claws pressed into the ground.

"…it does not see them as pieces of my siblings…"

"What does it see?"

A pause.

"…pieces of itself…"

Kushina stared at him.

"And you?"

His eyes narrowed.

"What do you see when you feel them?"

Kurama did not answer immediately.

The darkness around him moved.

Faint lights appeared.

Blue.

Gold.

Purple.

Fragments of Matatabi.

Chōmei.

Others he had not named.

Kurama watched them.

Not with fear.

Not with disgust.

With anger.

And grief.

"…I see what humans tore away…"

His voice shook the water beneath Kushina's feet.

"…and forced to forget their names…"

Kushina stepped closer to the bars.

"Then help them remember."

Kurama looked down at her.

"…if I reach through you…"

A pause.

"…the Voice may reach back…"

"You told me not to confuse knowledge with fear."

His teeth showed.

"…careful…"

"I am."

For once—

she did not sound sarcastic.

"I know the risk."

Another step.

"But they don't have anyone else who can reach them."

Kurama's gaze remained fixed on her.

"…and if I refuse…"

"I'll still try."

A long silence followed.

Then he lowered his head toward the bars.

Not surrendering.

Not agreeing completely.

But listening.

The platform shook.

Kushina opened her eyes.

The tunnel walls had changed.

Metal disappeared.

Ancient stone replaced it.

Uzumaki formulas covered every surface.

The organization had not created this route.

It had only repaired it.

Minato studied the glowing symbols.

"We've entered the original containment passage."

Daichi looked behind them.

"The communication link to Ren's train is gone."

They were alone now.

The route map appeared above the platform.

The echo's carriage pulsed ahead of them.

Seven minutes away.

The island rested beyond it.

Renji's countdown changed.

Fifty-four minutes.

Hana stared at the number.

"We won't reach the Guardian chamber in time."

Daichi studied the distance.

"Not at this speed."

Kushina looked toward the platform controls.

"Then make it faster."

"The barriers regulate movement."

"Break them."

"They are keeping the ocean outside."

Kushina lowered her hand.

"Don't break those."

"Excellent adjustment."

A crimson symbol appeared on the track ahead.

The first underwater barrier.

The platform slowed.

A voice emerged from the stone.

Older than the sanctuary.

Rougher.

"State the burden you carry."

Nobody answered.

The platform stopped completely.

Water pressed against glass-like seals surrounding the tunnel.

Dark shapes moved beyond them.

The ocean.

Miles of it.

Kushina stepped toward the symbol.

"I carry the Uzumaki inheritance."

Nothing happened.

Hana moved beside her.

"I carry the vessel mark."

The barrier remained closed.

Renji forced himself upright.

"I carry the core."

Still nothing.

Daichi frowned.

"It isn't asking what allows us through."

Minato looked at the ancient words surrounding the symbol.

"It's asking what we refuse to leave behind."

The Voice whispered faintly through the rails.

"Each other."

The crimson symbol flickered.

Hana's mark burned.

Renji's core answered.

The echo already knew the test.

Kushina looked toward the darkness ahead.

Then placed one hand around the golden chain connecting them.

"Lives."

The barrier pulsed.

"All of them."

Minato touched the chain.

Daichi followed.

Hana wrapped her hand around Renji's.

He hesitated—

then held on.

The ancient voice returned.

"Burden accepted."

The barrier opened.

The maintenance platform shot forward.

The ocean surrounded them.

Black water pressed against the glowing tunnel.

Behind them—

the crimson gate began to close.

Then the rails turned dark.

The Voice struck from ahead.

Black chakra travelled through the track—

straight toward the barrier mechanism.

Daichi's eyes widened.

"It's attacking the seal."

Minato threw three tags toward the closing gate.

Too late.

The barrier shattered behind them.

Ocean water exploded into the tunnel.

The force raced toward the platform.

Kushina's chains filled the passage.

Golden links struck the walls—

forming a net against the flood.

The water hit.

Her body nearly left the platform.

Minato caught her waist.

Daichi reinforced the chains with seal formulas.

Hana held Renji against the floor.

The maintenance platform continued moving.

Faster than the collapsing tunnel.

Barely.

Stone broke behind them.

The route vanished beneath the ocean.

No return.

No connection to the coast.

No way back to Ren and the prisoners.

Only the island ahead.

The echo's carriage.

The First Seal.

Kushina's chains strained against the flood.

Kurama's chakra stirred.

Not taking control.

Waiting.

For her decision.

She felt him watching the fragments inside Renji.

Remembering what had been taken.

Understanding exactly what followed them.

Kushina gritted her teeth.

"Kurama."

His answer came immediately.

"…I am here…"

Not afraid.

Not hiding.

Here.

Red chakra entered the golden chains.

The links strengthened.

The rushing ocean split around the platform.

And together—

they raced into the darkness.
