Chapter 81 - Chapter 81 – The Choice to Live

The ocean chased them.

Water filled the tunnel behind the maintenance platform—

crushing stone—

tearing ancient seals from the walls.

Kushina's chains remained spread across the passage.

Gold wrapped in red.

Her chakra—

and Kurama's.

Together.

The flood struck again.

The platform lurched forward.

Minato's arm tightened around Kushina's waist.

Daichi drove another seal into the metal floor.

Hana held Renji against the platform as his broken core flashed beneath her hands.

"Faster!" Kushina shouted.

Daichi looked toward the controls.

"This is already beyond its intended speed!"

"Then stop telling it!"

"I am not the one arguing with machinery!"

Another section of the tunnel collapsed.

The force travelled through Kushina's chains.

Every link shook.

Pain tore through her shoulders.

One chain began to slip.

Then another.

Kurama's chakra surged.

Not taking control.

Not forcing itself through her seal.

Waiting.

"…the left wall…"

Kushina saw it.

A crack spreading through the ancient stone.

She moved one chain away from the flood—

and anchored it against the weakening wall.

Another golden link wrapped around the platform.

A third remained behind them—

dividing the rushing water.

Each chain moved separately.

Different purpose.

Different pressure.

Still hers.

Kurama noticed.

"…better…"

Kushina gritted her teeth.

"Was that a compliment?"

"…do not become distracted…"

The wall shattered.

Her anchored chain pulled.

Stone twisted away from the track—

missing the platform by inches.

Minato looked toward her.

"You redirected it."

"I noticed."

"You've never controlled that many chains separately."

"Not helping."

His hand remained against her back.

His chakra steady.

"It was not criticism."

The tunnel ahead curved sharply upward.

A crimson barrier appeared across the track.

Closed.

Daichi's face hardened.

"The next flood gate."

"Can it open?" Hana asked.

"It will not recognize us at this speed."

Kushina looked behind them.

The ocean had swallowed everything.

"Then it learns quickly."

The ancient barrier spoke.

"Reduce velocity."

Kushina stared at it.

"No."

"Reduce velocity."

"Open."

"Passage denied."

The ocean struck her chains again.

Several golden links bent.

Kurama's red chakra held them together.

Daichi formed hand signs.

"We cannot break it."

"I know."

"We also cannot stop."

"I know."

Minato looked toward the symbols surrounding the gate.

"It recognizes Guardian authority."

Kushina raised one hand.

A chain shot forward.

Not striking the barrier.

Entering the spiral at its center.

The ancient formula opened around the golden link.

"State authorization."

Kushina pulled against the flood.

"Kushina Uzumaki."

The barrier flickered.

"Guardian identity confirmed."

"Open the gate."

"Unsafe velocity detected."

"Behind us is an ocean."

A pause.

"Environmental threat confirmed."

Kushina's eye twitched.

"Open."

The barrier separated.

Barely.

A narrow gap appeared at its center.

Too small for the platform.

Minato looked ahead.

"We won't fit."

"We will."

Kushina's chains wrapped around both sides of the gate.

The ancient seal resisted.

She pulled.

The gap widened.

Slowly.

Her arms shook.

The flood pressed harder from behind.

Then Kurama's chakra moved through every chain.

Hot.

Dense.

Freely given.

"…pull…"

Kushina's eyes widened.

"You're helping."

"…I am preventing us from being crushed…"

"Still counts."

Together—

they tore the barrier wide enough.

The platform shot through.

Daichi struck the controls.

The gate slammed shut behind them.

The ocean hit the other side.

The barrier bowed inward.

Cracks spread through the crimson light—

but it held.

For now.

The maintenance platform continued into the darkness.

Slower.

The sound of the flood faded behind them.

Nobody moved for several seconds.

Then Kushina's chains disappeared.

Her knees hit the floor.

Minato caught her before she fell completely.

"Easy."

"I'm fine."

"You are shaking."

"I'm shaking successfully."

Hana remained beside Renji.

"Daichi."

He turned.

White light had begun spreading beneath Renji's skin.

The stabilizing tags across his chest were burning away.

One after another.

His eyes remained closed.

His breathing shallow.

The countdown above the platform changed.

Forty-six minutes.

Daichi moved beside him immediately.

"The pressure accelerated the core failure."

Kushina pushed herself upright.

"Can you slow it again?"

"The outer network is collapsing."

"Can you rebuild it?"

"Not with ordinary seals."

Renji's mismatched eye opened.

"You are discussing me as though I am unconscious."

Hana exhaled in relief.

"You almost were."

"A temporary condition."

Kushina crawled closer.

"You need a new sentence."

"I have been busy dying."

Silence followed.

Renji looked between them.

"That was intended as humour."

"It was terrible," Kushina said.

Hana gave a weak laugh.

"Still counts."

Daichi placed his hand above the cracked core.

The white sphere pulsed beneath Renji's artificial flesh.

Its light no longer remained inside the seal lines.

It leaked outward—

carrying pieces of stolen chakra with it.

Blue fire appeared around Renji's shoulder.

Gold flickered through his chest.

Purple moved beneath one arm.

Each fragment pulled in a different direction.

Toward the island.

Toward the echo.

Toward something older.

Renji clenched his teeth.

"They are becoming louder."

Kurama rose inside Kushina.

Not alarmed.

Focused.

"What are they saying?" she asked.

Renji closed his eyes again.

"Nothing I can understand."

A pause.

"They feel…"

His fingers curled against the floor.

"…called."

Hana tightened her hand around his.

"They don't belong to the Voice."

"They may not know that."

Kushina looked inward.

"Kurama."

His response came immediately.

"…I hear them…"

"Can you reach them?"

A long silence.

"…perhaps…"

"That doesn't sound confident."

"…they are fragments…"

His voice lowered.

"…memories torn from living chakra…"

"Then remind them."

"…it may expose me to the echo…"

Kushina remained quiet.

She did not call it fear.

Did not challenge him.

Did not push.

"You know what it does."

"…yes…"

"Then you know how to stop it."

Another pause.

"…perhaps…"

Kushina looked at Renji.

His body trembled as the stolen chakra pulled against the failing core.

"We need you."

Kurama did not answer.

But red chakra entered Kushina's hand.

Slowly.

Controlled.

Not forced through the seal.

Offered.

"…this time…"

His voice rolled through her mind.

"…I am giving it to you…"

Kushina stared at the red light surrounding her fingers.

For once—

she had no quick answer.

No joke.

No argument.

She placed her hand over Renji's core.

"I'll be careful."

Kurama growled.

"…you rarely are…"

But he did not withdraw his chakra.

Golden chains appeared around Renji.

Only three.

One wrapped around the damaged core.

One connected to the fragments moving through his body.

The final chain entered Kushina's own seal—

reaching toward Kurama.

A straight path.

No force.

No restraint.

An invitation.

Kurama's chakra moved through it.

The golden links turned crimson.

Renji screamed.

Blue fire exploded from his body.

Hana refused to release his hand.

"What's happening?"

"The fragments recognize him," Kushina said.

"Kurama?"

"Yes."

The blue chakra struck the chain.

Then stopped.

A shape formed inside the flame.

Not complete.

Two bright eyes.

A pointed silhouette.

A memory of a creature the stolen chakra had once belonged to.

Kurama's voice passed through Kushina.

Not loud.

Not gentle.

Certain.

"…Matatabi…"

The blue fire trembled.

Then settled.

Golden chakra surged next.

It moved like wings beneath Renji's skin.

Violent.

Desperate.

Trying to escape the failing body.

Kurama spoke again.

"…Chōmei…"

The golden light scattered—

then returned.

Gathering close to the core instead of pulling away.

The purple fragment followed.

Kurama remained silent.

Kushina felt his frustration.

"You don't know?"

"…I know the chakra…"

A pause.

"…there is not enough left to hear its name…"

The purple energy struck the chain.

Renji's body arched.

The core cracked farther.

Daichi reached toward him.

Kushina stopped him.

"Wait."

Kurama lowered his head inside her mind.

His red eyes fixed on the fragment.

"…you are not the Voice…"

The purple chakra paused.

"…you are not the humans who tore you away…"

Another pause.

"…you belonged to someone…"

The fragment flickered.

Weak.

Confused.

"…and whatever remains of you…"

Kurama's claws pressed into the ground.

"…is not empty…"

The purple light folded inward.

It settled beside the blue and gold chakra.

Not healed.

Not complete.

But no longer trying to escape.

Renji collapsed against Hana.

His breathing returned.

The white light from his core dimmed slightly.

The countdown stopped.

For one second.

Then changed.

Forty-three minutes.

Daichi examined the network.

"You stabilized the fragments."

Kushina looked toward the crimson chains.

"We did."

Kurama became quiet.

But his chakra remained inside them.

Renji slowly opened his eyes.

"What happened?"

"The fragments remembered they don't belong to the Voice."

"Did they remember who they belong to?"

"Some of them."

His gaze moved toward Kushina's chains.

"And the others?"

Kurama answered through her before she could.

"…we will find out…"

Renji became still.

"You can speak through her."

Kushina frowned.

"He usually speaks at her."

Kurama growled.

"…I am reconsidering my assistance…"

Renji's lips moved faintly.

A real smile.

Small.

Exhausted.

But his.

The platform continued through the ancient passage.

The walls were no longer metal.

Every surface was covered in old sealing formulas.

Some had been repaired by the organization.

Others remained untouched.

Names appeared between them.

Uzumaki Guardians.

Generations of them.

Each one followed by a date.

Then—

a final line.

Mitoha Uzumaki – First Guardian.

Kushina stared at the name as they passed.

The woman from the sanctuary's memory.

The one who had held the original seal together with her clan.

Daichi opened the inheritance scroll.

The map rose above it.

The crimson spiral of the First Seal pulsed ahead.

The echo's carriage had nearly reached the island.

Eight minutes away.

Their own platform remained twelve minutes behind.

Hana looked toward Renji's countdown.

"We may reach it."

Daichi did not answer.

Kushina saw his expression.

"Say it."

"The Guardian chamber is not at the entrance."

"How far inside?"

"Unknown."

"That is not helpful."

"It is honest."

Minato studied the core-division diagram.

"We need three anchors."

Kushina looked toward him.

"The scroll showed two smaller circles."

"The diagram was incomplete before Guardian authorization."

He turned the page toward them.

New symbols had appeared.

One surrounded the central core.

Three lines extended outward.

Daichi read them.

"Guardian."

"Identity."

"Structure."

Hana looked at Renji.

"What do they mean?"

Daichi pointed toward Kushina.

"The Guardian separates the Voice's influence from the core."

Then toward Hana.

"The identity anchor ensures Renji's consciousness remains inside the body intended for him."

Hana stared at the diagram.

"And structure?"

Minato followed the final line.

"Someone must hold the artificial chakra network together while the core is divided."

Kushina looked toward Daichi.

"You."

He shook his head.

"I know the original design."

"That sounds like yes."

"It means my chakra is too similar to the system that created him."

Renji's expression hardened.

"The organization used your formulas."

"Yes."

Daichi did not defend himself.

"If I become the structural anchor, the core may interpret my chakra as a recovery command."

"And return him to the organization's control," Hana whispered.

Daichi nodded.

Kushina looked toward Minato.

He was already reading the structural formula.

"You can do it."

Minato remained silent.

Not uncertain.

Calculating.

"The network contains several different Bijuu chakra signatures."

Kurama growled inside her.

"…his chakra is precise…"

Kushina raised an eyebrow.

"Was that another compliment?"

"…it was an observation…"

Minato looked toward her.

"What did he say?"

"He thinks you can do it."

A pause.

"He said it less politely."

Minato studied the diagram again.

"Then I will."

Renji looked between them.

"Kushina separates the influence."

"Hana protects my identity."

"Minato holds my body together."

His gaze moved toward Daichi.

"And you?"

Daichi closed the scroll.

"I keep the First Seal from using the division to open itself."

Renji stared at him.

"That sounds significant."

"It is."

"What happens if you fail?"

Daichi answered calmly.

"The main containment opens."

Hana's face went pale.

"And the Third returns."

"Possibly."

Kushina crossed her arms.

"You waited until now to mention that?"

"We only just received the complete diagram."

"You could have looked more concerned."

"I am extremely concerned."

"You hide it badly."

"I was not aware of that criticism before meeting you."

Renji pushed himself upright.

The crimson chain around his chest supported him.

"Destroy the core."

Kushina's expression changed.

"No."

"The division risks opening the First Seal."

"We knew there would be a risk."

"It risks every person connected to the fragments."

"No."

"It risks Kurama."

Kushina's chains tightened.

"I said no."

Renji looked at her.

"You cannot keep rejecting the simplest solution."

"Killing you is not simple."

"It removes the core."

"It removes you."

"The Voice cannot use a body that no longer exists."

Hana stepped closer.

"You do."

He looked toward her.

"What?"

"You still think of your body as an object."

"It was constructed."

"So was your name."

Renji's jaw tightened.

"I chose my name."

"Exactly."

Kushina knelt in front of him.

"What do you want?"

He stared at her.

"To stop the Voice."

"That isn't what I asked."

"To free Hana."

"Still not what I asked."

His shifting eye moved away.

The platform rushed beneath them.

The countdown continued.

Thirty-nine minutes.

Kushina did not look at it.

"What do you want for yourself?"

Renji remained silent.

The Voice whispered through the rails.

Distant.

Closer than before.

"He wants purpose."

Renji stiffened.

Kushina's chains struck the floor.

"Stay out of this."

The Voice laughed through the ancient stone.

"A tool without purpose is only waste."

The seal lines across Renji's face began glowing.

"He knows what he is."

Hana grabbed his hand.

Renji tried to pull away.

She held tighter.

The Voice continued.

"A body created to contain."

White light leaked from his chest.

"A core created to open."

His mismatched eye darkened.

"A life created to end."

Kushina caught his face between her hands.

"Look at me."

He resisted.

"Renji."

His eyes finally met hers.

"What do you want?"

His lips parted.

No answer came.

The Voice pressed harder.

"Nothing."

Kushina shook her head.

"Your answer."

Renji's breathing broke.

The artificial seams around his throat glowed.

His hands trembled.

He had offered his life again and again.

Because dying for someone required no future.

No uncertainty.

No decision about what came after.

Hana lowered her voice.

"You don't have to earn the right to stay."

Renji looked toward her.

The core pulsed.

Pain crossed his face.

"I do not know how to live like this."

Kushina's grip softened.

"Neither do we."

Minato stood beside her.

"We learn."

Daichi remained near the controls.

"You will have time to be difficult later."

Renji blinked.

Kushina looked toward Daichi.

"That was almost kind."

"Do not make it worse."

The Voice whispered again.

"Choose the useful death."

Renji closed his eyes.

The blue flame inside him moved.

Matatabi's fragment.

Gold followed.

Chōmei.

Pieces that had survived being torn away.

Incomplete—

but still refusing to disappear.

Kurama's voice reached him through Kushina's chain.

"…you were made as a cage…"

Renji's eyes opened.

"…so was she…"

Kushina frowned.

"Kurama."

He continued.

"…humans decided what both of you were meant to hold…"

Red chakra moved around the white core.

"…that does not mean they decide what you become…"

Renji stared at the crimson light.

For several seconds—

he said nothing.

Then his hand closed around Hana's.

His other hand caught Kushina's chain.

"I don't want to die."

The words were quiet.

Almost ashamed.

Kushina shook her head.

"Say it again."

His voice grew stronger.

"I don't want to die."

The Voice pressed against the rails.

"Then you will watch them die instead."

Renji's expression hardened.

"No."

A pause.

"I will help them live."

The core pulsed.

Not cracking.

Answering.

For the first time—

its light followed his heartbeat.

The platform's map flashed.

The echo's carriage reached the island.

Far ahead—

a violent impact travelled through the rails.

The entire tunnel shook.

Ancient formulas ignited across the walls.

One after another.

A warning repeated above them.

"Outer containment breached."

Hana's crimson mark burned.

She cried out.

Renji caught her before she fell.

The roles reversed.

Only for a moment.

But enough.

The map expanded.

The detached carriage had struck the first barrier surrounding the island.

Black chakra poured from it.

The crimson gate remained closed—

but a thin crack had formed through its center.

Daichi looked toward the countdown.

Thirty-six minutes.

Then toward the distance.

"Six minutes until we reach the barrier."

Kushina stood.

Her chains appeared behind her.

Gold and red.

Separate.

Controlled.

One remained around Renji's core.

One protected Hana's mark.

One anchored the platform.

The others waited.

Each with a purpose.

Minato moved beside her.

"What is the plan?"

Kushina stared at the crack ahead.

"The echo needs my Uzumaki chakra to open the barrier."

Daichi nodded.

"And we need to enter to reach the Guardian chamber."

Hana looked toward the Voice's carriage.

"So either way, the gate opens."

"No."

Kushina's chains spread.

"We open only our side."

Daichi's eyes narrowed.

"The barrier is a single formula."

"Then we change it."

"You have never altered a seal of this scale."

Kushina looked toward the inheritance scroll.

"Neither had the first person who built it."

Another impact shook the tunnel.

The crack in the outer barrier widened.

A black thread slipped through.

Only one.

Thin enough to be missed.

Kurama saw it.

"…the echo has entered the first layer…"

Kushina tightened her fists.

"Then we get there before the rest follows."

The platform accelerated.

Ancient stone gave way to crimson light.

Beyond it—

through the transparent walls of the underwater passage—

the island appeared.

Black rock rising from the ocean floor.

Covered in chains large enough to surround mountains.

At its center—

a sealed gate waited.

The echo's carriage struck it again.

The first barrier cracked.

And something on the other side—

knocked back.
