Chapter 79 - Chapter 79 – The Passenger

The lights remained dark.

Only the hollow circles glowed.

Thirty pale rings—

burning against thirty throats.

The prisoners sat throughout the train.

Some awake.

Some barely conscious.

All completely still.

Then every head turned toward Kushina.

At the same time.

"Thank you for carrying me."

The words came from every mouth.

One voice.

Dozens of bodies.

Golden chains erupted behind Kushina.

They spread across the compartment—

forming a barrier around Hana, Renji and the rescued prisoners.

"Get out of them."

The Voice laughed.

Not beneath the mountain.

Not inside the walls.

Everywhere.

"You opened them."

"I freed them."

"You connected them."

The circles grew brighter.

"You gave me a road."

Mika's body arched.

Hana caught her before her head struck the floor.

"Mika!"

Her eyes opened.

Black.

Not empty.

Filled with something too large to belong inside them.

"Hana…"

For a moment—

it was her own voice.

Then the Voice returned.

"She remembers you."

Mika's hand closed around Hana's throat.

Hana gasped.

Kushina's chain wrapped around Mika's wrist—

stopping her without tightening.

Mika began crying.

Her fingers still tried to close.

"I'm sorry…"

Hana held her arm.

"I know."

"I can't stop it."

"You did before."

The Voice forced Mika's grip harder.

Hana struggled to breathe.

"Do it again."

Mika screamed.

Her fingers opened.

Only slightly.

Enough for Hana to pull away.

Kushina drew Mika back with the chain.

The blackness in her eyes flickered.

Then moved.

Not disappearing.

Travelling.

The circle on the prisoner beside her ignited.

His body rose.

Then another.

Then five more.

Kurama growled inside Kushina.

"…it is moving between them…"

"How much of it escaped?"

His chakra pressed against the seal.

Listening.

Searching.

"…not all…"

A pause.

"…an echo…"

"An echo can't do this."

"…this one can…"

The train suddenly accelerated.

Metal screamed beneath the floor.

Everyone was thrown backward.

Kushina's chains struck the walls—

holding the prisoners in place before they could collide with one another.

Ren grabbed the doorway to the control chamber.

"We're moving too fast."

Minato appeared beside him.

"Can you stop it?"

Ren looked at the active formulas covering the controls.

"They're locked."

"By the researcher?"

Ren's face tightened.

"No."

The black circles pulsed again.

"By the Voice."

The train rushed through the tunnel.

White lights flashed past the windows.

Faster.

Faster.

The wheels no longer seemed to touch the rails.

Black seal lines had appeared beneath the floor—

running from every marked prisoner toward the front of the train.

Daichi dropped to one knee.

His palm pressed against the metal.

His expression changed.

"This is a transport network."

Kushina looked toward him.

"We noticed."

"Not only for people."

A formula spread beneath his hand.

Old.

Layered beneath the organization's control seals.

"It was designed to move sealed chakra."

Ren stared at the floor.

"The train itself is a vessel."

The Voice spoke through the prisoners.

"A road."

The train shook.

"A body."

Renji's cracked core flashed.

White light burst through the seal network around his chest.

He dropped to one knee.

Kushina's chain caught him.

"Renji!"

His mismatched eye turned black—

then blue—

then gold.

The stolen Bijuu fragments struck against his artificial chakra network.

"It is calling the core."

Hana placed a hand against his shoulder.

"Don't answer."

"I am not choosing to."

The Voice whispered through Mika.

"You were made for me."

Renji's fingers dug into the floor.

"No."

"Empty."

"No."

"Waiting."

His seal lines began to split.

White light leaked through his face and throat.

Kushina wrapped another chain around his chest.

"His name is Renji."

The Voice laughed.

"Names are sounds."

Renji lifted his head.

Pain twisted across his face.

"Then why…"

A pause.

"…do you keep trying to take mine?"

Blue fire erupted from his shoulder.

It travelled through Kushina's chain—

striking the black lines beneath the floor.

The train lights flashed blue.

For one heartbeat—

every hollow circle went dark.

The prisoners collapsed.

Then the marks ignited again.

Brighter.

Renji fell forward.

Hana caught him.

The crack in his core widened.

A small fragment of white light broke away—

and vanished into the floor.

Daichi looked at him.

"Two hours was optimistic."

Kushina's expression hardened.

"How long?"

"Less than ninety minutes."

The Voice moved again.

A young boy near the rear of the compartment opened his eyes.

He could not have been older than twelve.

His body rose unsteadily.

One hand formed a sharp chakra edge.

Then turned toward his own throat.

Kushina's chain caught his wrist.

"No."

The boy cried silently.

His arm continued pushing.

The Voice spoke through him.

"You cannot restrain every hand."

Another prisoner raised a weapon.

Then another.

Some turned toward the group.

Others toward themselves.

Kushina's chains multiplied.

One around every wrist.

Every ankle.

Every weapon.

Golden links filled the compartment.

The weight struck her all at once.

Thirty bodies.

Thirty struggles.

Thirty minds trapped behind the same command.

Her knees bent.

Minato placed one hand against her back.

His chakra entered the chains.

Calm.

Precise.

"I have you."

Daichi caught one of the links.

"So do I."

Hana wrapped both hands around the chain holding Mika.

Ren supported the young boy beside him.

Even the prisoners who could still move reached for one another.

The chains steadied.

The Voice became quiet.

Watching.

Then—

"You will tire."

Kushina breathed through the pressure.

"Probably."

"They will break."

"Maybe."

The golden links tightened.

"But not for you."

Ren called from the control chamber.

"The route has changed."

Kushina looked toward him.

"Changed to what?"

A map flickered above the controls.

The tunnel line stretched toward the eastern coast.

But instead of stopping at the underground harbour—

it continued.

Beneath the sea.

Directly toward the hidden island.

The crimson spiral appeared at the end.

The First Seal.

Minato's expression sharpened.

"The train can reach the island?"

Ren shook his head.

"It shouldn't."

Daichi looked at the old formula beneath the floor.

"The rails are part of the original containment route."

Hana stared at the map.

"The organization found the way to the island."

"No," Renji said weakly.

Everyone looked toward him.

His shifting eye remained fixed on the pulsing route.

"They built one."

The researcher's voice emerged from the control screen.

"More accurately…"

The image appeared.

The man with the burned Uzumaki spiral stood inside his laboratory.

"…we repaired what your clan abandoned."

Kushina's chains struck the nearest screen.

The image distorted—

then reappeared on another.

"You put the Voice on the train."

"No."

His gaze moved toward the prisoners.

"You did."

Kushina's anger surged.

The black lines beneath the floor brightened immediately.

The Voice pressed against every hollow circle.

Kurama snarled.

"…control yourself…"

"I am."

"…poorly…"

She forced one breath into her lungs.

Then another.

The chains stopped shaking.

Daichi faced the screen.

"This was the plan."

The researcher smiled faintly.

"Not the original one."

"You wanted the vessels synchronized."

"I wanted to know whether the fragment could exist across multiple identities."

"And Kushina proved it could."

"No."

His eyes settled on her.

"She proved they could resist it."

A pause.

"That is far more valuable."

Kushina stepped toward the screen.

"You used us to improve the network."

"I observed."

"You forced thirty people into it."

"They were already prepared."

Hana's face hardened.

"Prepared?"

The man looked toward her.

"You survived the first synchronization."

"That doesn't make what you did successful."

"No."

His voice remained calm.

"It made you useful."

Mika's hand tightened around Hana's.

This time—

by choice.

Kushina saw it.

So did the researcher.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

Ren looked at the controls.

"There are three passenger sections."

Minato followed his gaze.

"And a rear containment carriage."

Daichi understood immediately.

"The old transport seal."

Ren nodded.

"It was used for unstable chakra samples."

Kushina looked toward the black lines beneath the floor.

"Can it hold the echo?"

"Temporarily."

"How do we move it?"

Silence followed.

Everyone already knew the answer.

Through the network.

Through the prisoners.

Through Kushina's chains.

Daichi shook his head.

"The Voice is distributed across every marked vessel."

"Then we pull it out."

"It will try to enter the nearest compatible body."

Kushina looked toward Renji.

His core flashed in response.

He forced himself upright.

"Use me."

"No."

"It is already trying to reach the core."

"That is why we are not giving it easier access."

"If the core attracts it—"

"It could take your body."

"My body is failing."

Kushina moved closer.

"That does not make it available."

Renji met her eyes.

"You cannot reject every sacrifice."

"I can reject yours."

"Why?"

"Because you're only offering it because you think you were built to be used."

Silence.

The seal lines across his face stopped glowing.

Kushina lowered her voice.

"You don't belong to the Voice."

A pause.

"You don't belong to the organization."

Another.

"And you don't belong to us."

Renji stared at her.

"Then what am I supposed to do?"

"Choose to help."

A pause.

"Not choose to disappear."

Hana moved beside him.

"We use the core as a boundary."

Daichi looked toward her.

"Not a vessel?"

"A pattern."

She touched the faded circle on her neck.

"The core keeps identities separate."

Minato studied the white light beneath Renji's chest.

"If Kushina copies its stabilizing formula through the chains…"

"The Voice could be pulled out without taking their memories," Daichi finished.

Renji looked toward the control map.

"And moved into the rear carriage."

Kushina frowned.

"Will it work?"

Daichi answered honestly.

"I don't know."

"Good."

Ren looked toward her.

"Good?"

"At least nobody is pretending."

The Voice spoke through all thirty prisoners.

"You cannot remove me."

Mika's eyes turned black.

"I am already what they fear."

The young boy beside Ren began trembling.

"I am the anger they hide."

Hana's mark burned.

"The doubt they deny."

Renji's core pulsed.

"The emptiness they carry."

Finally—

the Voice spoke inside Kushina's mind.

Not through Kurama.

Through the chains.

You are the center.

Her breath stopped.

Break you—

The black lines rushed toward her.

—and they all belong to me.

Kushina released every chain.

The golden links vanished.

The prisoners dropped.

Minato caught her shoulder.

"What are you doing?"

"Changing the center."

Daichi stared at her.

"There must be an anchor."

"Then we make more than one."

The oath returned.

I will carry what must be carried.

But I will not carry it alone.

Kushina looked around the compartment.

At Mika.

The young boy.

The prisoners whose names she had heard inside the Constellation.

Taro.

Emi.

Sora.

Kaede.

Jun.

People still weak from years of captivity.

People who had already been connected without permission.

She would not do that again.

"The Voice is inside the network."

No one spoke.

"If we pull it out, it will fight through every one of you."

Mika slowly sat up.

"What do you need us to do?"

"Choose."

The researcher watched from the screen.

Kushina ignored him.

"I can connect us again."

A pause.

"But only if each of you agrees."

The young boy looked toward the mark on his neck.

"What happens if we say no?"

"We find another way."

Daichi looked at her.

"We do not have time."

Kushina did not turn toward him.

"They still get to choose."

Silence filled the moving train.

The Voice whispered through the circles.

"They are afraid."

Mika looked at Hana.

Then at Kushina.

"Yes."

Her voice trembled.

"I am."

She reached for the nearest golden chain as it slowly formed.

"But I'm still choosing."

Hana placed her hand beside hers.

Ren followed.

Then Renji.

Minato.

Daichi.

One by one—

the rescued prisoners reached for the chains.

Not all immediately.

Some hesitated.

Some cried.

One woman shook her head for several seconds—

then placed only two fingers against the golden link.

It was enough.

The young boy whispered:

"My name is Kaito."

Kushina nodded.

"Hold on, Kaito."

The chains spread.

But none led only to Kushina.

They connected every person to the next.

A circle.

No beginning.

No single center.

Golden links moved through the compartment—

hand to hand.

Name to name.

The researcher stepped closer to his screen.

"What are you doing?"

Daichi watched the formula form beneath them.

His expression changed.

"The Constellation."

"No," Kushina said.

A pause.

"Something better."

Renji placed one hand against his chest.

White light moved from the cracked vessel core—

into the golden network.

Every person became surrounded by a thin circle.

Not hollow.

Filled with their own chakra.

Their own memories.

Their own identity.

The Voice struck immediately.

Every black mark ignited.

Pain tore through the group.

Several prisoners screamed.

Kushina felt the echo move—

searching for the weakest point.

Mika saw the white room again.

Hana felt the facility restraints around her wrists.

Ren heard the researcher's commands.

Renji heard a number instead of a name.

Kushina stood alone in an empty forest.

Everyone gone.

Minato.

Daichi.

Hana.

All of them.

Only the Voice remained.

"You always end alone."

A hand closed around hers.

Minato.

The illusion flickered.

Another hand caught the chain.

Hana.

Then Renji.

Daichi.

Ren.

Dozens of separate chakras surrounded her.

Not depending on her.

Standing with her.

Kushina opened her eyes.

"No center."

The Voice pressed harder.

"Then no protection."

Mika lifted her head.

"My name is Mika."

A black line tore from her neck.

Kaito followed.

"My name is Kaito."

Another thread broke.

"Taro."

"Emi."

"Sora."

"Kaede."

"Jun."

Names filled the train.

Different voices.

Different rhythms.

No synchronization.

No command.

Choice.

The Voice screamed.

Black chakra erupted from every hollow circle.

It struck the golden network—

but could not decide where to enter.

Every person was connected.

Every person remained separate.

The echo moved faster.

Mika.

Kaito.

Hana.

Ren.

Renji.

Kushina.

Each time it entered one—

the others pulled it away.

Not carrying their pain for them.

Refusing to let it isolate anyone inside it.

Daichi pressed both hands against the floor.

The rear containment carriage opened.

Crimson formulas awakened behind the final door.

"Now!"

Kushina raised the chain.

Everyone pulled.

The black echo emerged from the marks.

Not like smoke.

Like threads.

Hundreds of them.

Tangled together.

Faces appeared within the darkness.

Mouths.

Eyes.

Memories that belonged to no single person.

The mass struck the walls.

The train shook violently.

The Voice screamed through every light.

"I AM WHAT REMAINS."

Kushina tightened her grip.

"So are we."

The group pulled again.

The echo slid through the compartment.

Toward the rear carriage.

It caught around Renji's chest.

His core blazed.

The darkness surged toward it.

Renji screamed.

Hana wrapped both arms around him.

"Renji!"

The Voice pressed into the crack.

"Body."

Renji's shifting eye turned completely black.

His hand closed around Hana's throat.

She did not release him.

"My name is Hana."

His fingers tightened.

"And your name is Renji."

The blackness reached the seal lines across his face.

Hana pressed her forehead against his.

"You chose it."

His hand trembled.

"You chose us."

The white core pulsed.

Once.

Renji gasped.

"My name…"

The darkness pulled harder.

"…is Renji."

The vessel core rejected the echo.

White light exploded from his chest.

The Voice was thrown backward—

directly into the rear containment carriage.

Daichi slammed his palm against the floor.

Crimson barriers rose.

Minato added four seal tags.

Ren closed the control route.

The final door began to shut.

Dark hands formed between the narrowing gap.

Reaching toward Hana.

Toward Renji.

Toward Kushina.

The prisoners pulled together.

Golden chains wrapped around the hands—

dragging them back.

The door slammed closed.

Silence.

Every hollow circle went dark.

The prisoners collapsed.

But this time—

their bodies remained their own.

Hana lowered Renji carefully.

His eyes were closed.

The core still glowed.

Barely.

Kushina reached him.

"Renji?"

His lips moved.

"I am…"

A weak breath.

"…still functional."

Kushina laughed once.

Relief breaking through exhaustion.

"You need a new sentence."

"I will consider it."

Ren looked toward the control panel.

"The echo is contained."

"For how long?" Minato asked.

Daichi studied the crimson seals around the rear carriage.

"Perhaps an hour."

Kushina looked toward the route map.

"That's enough to reach the harbour."

"We cannot bring it to the coast," Hana said.

Kushina nodded.

"We don't."

Ren's hands moved across the controls.

A coupling symbol appeared.

"The rear carriage can be separated."

Minato examined the tracks behind them.

"At this speed?"

"It will stop automatically once disconnected."

The researcher's image returned.

His expression had changed.

Not fear.

Concentration.

"Do not release that carriage."

Kushina looked toward the screen.

"Now I definitely will."

"You do not understand the transport system."

"You've said that a lot."

"The carriage is part of the containment route."

"Not anymore."

Ren pressed his palm against the release seal.

The system rejected him.

"Research authority required."

Minato placed a tag against the control panel.

"Again."

Ren's chakra entered the formula.

"Ren Uzumaki."

The release symbol flickered.

Daichi added his own seal.

The researcher's eyes widened.

"Daichi."

He ignored him.

Kushina connected one golden chain to the mechanism.

The surviving prisoners reached for it.

Their chakra entered together.

The system shook.

Then—

"Guardian authority accepted."

The coupling broke.

A violent impact travelled through the train.

The rear carriage fell away.

Kushina watched through the final window.

Its crimson lights grew smaller.

The dark shape slowed inside the tunnel.

Then disappeared.

The Voice struck the containment walls.

Once.

Twice.

The distance between them increased.

The marks on the prisoners remained dark.

Hana exhaled.

"It's gone."

Kurama remained tense.

"…no…"

Kushina's relief vanished.

"What?"

The route map changed.

Behind their train—

a second track illuminated.

The detached carriage did not stop.

Metal mechanisms awakened beneath it.

The rails pulled it sideways.

Onto another line.

Ren stared at the control panel.

"That route wasn't there."

Daichi looked toward the researcher's screen.

The man no longer appeared concerned.

He smiled.

"You improved the vessel network."

A pause.

"You isolated the echo."

Another.

"And now you have placed it exactly where I need it."

The second track extended beneath the sea.

Not toward the harbour.

Directly toward the crimson spiral.

The First Seal.

Kushina struck the screen with a chain.

It shattered.

But the map remained glowing above the controls.

Two routes.

Two trains.

Their group heading toward the coast.

The sealed echo racing toward the island.

Renji's core pulsed weakly.

A number appeared beside it.

Seventy-three minutes.

Hana's faded mark began to glow again.

Not black.

Crimson.

The Voice whispered through the distant rails.

"You carried me far enough."

The detached carriage accelerated.

And disappeared beneath the sea.
