Chapter 2 - Another day of nothing

Chapter 2:

Ava woke up before the sun.

Not because she wanted to.

But because hunger didn't let her sleep.

Her stomach felt tight, empty… painful.

For a moment, she just lay there, staring at the ceiling, listening.

Her grandmother coughing.

Her grandfather shifting slowly.

Her father's quiet breathing.

And outside… the noise of the city already beginning.

Life was moving.

But hers felt stuck.

She stood up quietly and stepped into the small living space.

Her mother was already awake.

Standing.

Thinking.

Worrying.

"You're up early," her mother said softly.

Ava gave a small nod. "I couldn't sleep."

Her mother didn't ask why.

She already knew.

The pot in the kitchen was still empty.

Same as yesterday.

Same as the day before.

Same as always.

"I'll go out again today," Ava said.

Her mother turned to her. "Ava…"

"I have to," she said quickly. "We can't just sit here."

There was silence.

Then her mother sighed.

"Just… be careful."

Outside, the air was dry and dusty.

The streets were already busy—people walking fast, cars passing, voices everywhere.

Ava walked with purpose.

Even if she had no real plan.

First shop.

Rejected.

Second shop.

Rejected.

Third shop.

The man didn't even let her finish speaking.

"You're too young," he said. "Come back when you're older."

Ava forced a smile. "Okay… thank you."

But inside?

She was tired.

So tired.

Hours passed.

The sun burned above her.

Her feet hurt.

Her hope faded with every step.

By the time afternoon came, Ava had nothing.

No job.

No money.

No food.

Nothing.

She stopped walking.

Right in the middle of a crowded street.

People passed her.

No one noticed her.

No one cared.

Her chest tightened.

Her eyes filled with tears.

But she blinked them away quickly.

"No…" she whispered. "Not here."

She turned into a quieter path.

Away from the noise.

Away from the people.

The alley was narrow.

Silent.

Almost forgotten.

Trash lay scattered.

Old boxes.

Broken things.

Things no one wanted anymore.

Ava walked slowly, her shoulders heavy.

Then…

She stopped.

Something caught her eye.

On the ground.

Between the dust and the dirt.

A pencil.

She frowned slightly.

It looked… normal.

But also not.

It wasn't broken.

It wasn't dirty like everything else around it.

It just… lay there.

Almost like it was waiting.

Ava looked around.

No one.

She bent down and picked it up.

It felt… light.

But strange.

She turned it in her fingers.

"Someone must've dropped it," she said quietly.

For a second, she just stared at it.

Then she shrugged.

"It's just a pencil."

She slipped it into her pocket.

And started walking again.

She didn't know it yet…

But that small, simple decision…

Was about to change her life.
