Elaris's POV
His eyes were blank as I approached him, no flicker of shock or surprise. No elements of recognition, nothing.
He adjusted on the bed, so he could turn fully in my direction, the bed squealing beneath him, an aching cry of metal scratching tiles.
Seeing him brought back memories of that awful might, the night my life changed for the worse. The night we fell from being important members of a pack we had given all our lives to, and became criminals.
I saw myself running down the dark corridor that night at the nose of Alpha Kurt's scream of pain. His last words echoed in my head, and I could almost believe it was real, like it was happening again around me.
"Are you okay, Doctor?" Nurse Mara called behind me.
It was then I knew I had stepped walking for the Head Guard'd bed.
I slanted her a warm, unrevealing smile. She tried to speak again, but I increased the wattage of my smile. That gave her the clue to what I thought of her next words. Her lips sealed shut.
