Vee sat on the edge of her bed, her fingers tracing the edge of her phone as she stared at the message Rui had sent her. He'd been so patient, so understanding. She had been dancing around his offer for the weekend getaway for what felt like ages. The idea of stepping away from her responsibilities, her projects, her carefully laid-out plans was terrifying. But then, there was Rui, offering her something simple, something she couldn't quite refuse anymore. A weekend away to just be.
It had been a few days since their double date, and she had to admit, things felt different. She wasn't sure if it was because of the easy rapport they'd shared or the way Rui made her feel seen and understood, but something inside her had shifted. Maybe it was time to stop overthinking everything and just take a leap. What was she really afraid of? The worst that could happen was that she would enjoy herself.
Vee took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her decision. She had spent so long trying to maintain control, to keep her life structured and predictable. But life wasn't supposed to be about following the rules all the time but sometimes, sometimes it was about stepping off the beaten path and seeing where the journey took you.
She unlocked her phone and typed out a message to Rui:
"I've been thinking about it... I'll go. I'm ready for the weekend getaway."
Her heart raced as she hit 'send,' almost immediately regretting the decision. But the more she thought about it, the more it felt right. Rui had been patient, kind, and understanding. Maybe this was the chance for her to let go of the walls she had built up. A weekend with him wouldn't ruin her life. A few minutes later, her phone buzzed. It was Rui.
"You don't know how happy this makes me. I promise you, this weekend is going to be just what you need. I'm looking forward to it."
Vee smiled, a certain warmth spreading through her chest at his words. Maybe it wasn't such a crazy idea after all.
She sat back against her pillows, closing her eyes for a moment. She had finally said yes to something outside of her plans. For once, she was choosing to listen to her heart rather than her head. And it felt good.
The next few days were a whirlwind of packing and preparing. Vee had to finish up her work for the week, tie up loose ends with her internship, and make sure everything was set before she left. When the day finally arrived, Vee found herself standing at the door of her apartment, suitcase in hand, her heart fluttering with nervous excitement. She had texted Rui earlier in the morning to let him know she was ready.

Vee smiled, taking a final look at her apartment before stepping out. "Ready as I'll ever be," she whispered to herself.
When she reached the car, Rui was standing by the passenger side, a wide grin on his face as he opened the door for her.
"You're all set?" he asked, his eyes twinkling with excitement.
"I think so," Vee replied, feeling the nervous energy bubbling inside her. "I'm all yours for the weekend."
Rui gave her a wink as he closed the door behind her. "That's exactly what I wanted to hear."
The drive to the unknown destination was filled with easy conversation, laughter, and the kind of comfortable silence that spoke volumes. It was almost surreal, how natural it felt to be with Rui. She had spent so much of her life compartmentalizing, planning every minute, controlling every outcome. But now, for the first time in a long time, she was letting someone else take the lead. And it felt good.
Eventually, they arrived at a private, secluded resort, nestled between cliffs overlooking a sparkling blue sea. The air smelled of salt and the promise of something new. Vee stepped out of the car, her eyes widening at the beauty of the place. It was everything she didn't know she needed.
"Welcome to our weekend getaway," Rui said softly, his hand resting gently on the small of her back. "I thought you might like this."
Vee looked around, taking in the breathtaking view. The resort was peaceful, isolated, a perfect place to escape from the pressures of everyday life. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore seemed to invite her to relax, to breathe, to let go.
"This... this is incredible," she said, her voice filled with awe.
"I'm glad you think so," Rui replied, his smile warm. "I want you to enjoy this, Vee. No stress, no expectations. Just us. Just being."
Vee took a deep breath, feeling the tension in her shoulders begin to ease. Maybe this was exactly what she needed. Time to herself, time with Rui, away from everything that weighed her down.
For the first time in a long time, she felt free.
