Chapter 21 - A weekend to remember

Vee awoke to the sound of waves crashing against the shore, a steady, rhythmic lullaby that pulled her from her sleep. The morning sun filtered through the curtains, casting soft golden light across the room. For a moment, she couldn't remember where she was. But as the haze of sleep lifted, she remembered, she was at the resort with Rui, far away from the routine and responsibilities of her daily life.

She stretched lazily under the soft linens, feeling the warmth of the sun on her skin. Her mind wandered back to the day before, when she had agreed to join Rui for this spontaneous getaway. It still felt a bit surreal, leaving everything behind to just be. But now, waking up in this beautiful place, surrounded by the quiet serenity of the ocean, she felt… free.

Vee turned to look at the other side of the bed, expecting to find Rui still asleep, but the space was empty. A quiet sense of disappointment flickered in her chest. She hadn't expected him to be there, of course, but it was hard not to hope. She smiled to herself, shaking off the thought.

She heard the soft clink of glass and the rustling of fabric from the other room. Rui was probably preparing something, maybe breakfast? The thought of sharing a meal with him on the balcony, overlooking the endless blue, made her smile.

Vee slipped out of bed and stretched again, pulling on the plush robe that had been left for her. She padded over to the door, opening it to find Rui standing at the small kitchen counter, working with a coffee machine, a smile already playing at the corner of his lips when he saw her.

"Good morning," he greeted softly, his voice hushed, as though not wanting to disturb the tranquility of the place. "How did you sleep?"

Vee smiled as she stepped toward him, her hands still tucked into the robe. "Like a dream," she replied, her voice thick with the lingering remnants of sleep. "This place is amazing."

Rui's smile widened. "I'm glad you like it. I figured you might need some peace and quiet to recharge. No distractions, no noise. Just the sound of the waves."

Vee nodded, grateful. "It's perfect."

He placed a steaming cup of coffee in front of her and took a step back, watching her with a quiet intensity. There was something different about him today, something warmer, softer. Vee tried not to overthink it. She wasn't used to having someone so close to her, so attuned to her presence. But there was an ease between them now, a natural rhythm that felt right.

"So, what's the plan for today?" Vee asked, taking a careful sip from her coffee. The bitterness of it contrasted beautifully with the sweetness of the morning air. She closed her eyes for a second, savoring the moment.

Rui shrugged, a playful gleam in his eye. "I was thinking we could just wander around. No schedule, no obligations. Whatever you want to do, we'll do. I just want to make sure you're enjoying yourself."

Vee raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Wander around?"

He nodded. "Exactly. Let's explore the resort, maybe take a walk on the beach. Do whatever feels right in the moment. It's your weekend too, Vee."

Her heart fluttered at his words. There was something refreshing about how effortlessly he embraced the idea of spontaneity. In her world, every decision was calculated, every moment accounted for. But with Rui, it was different. He was all about the experience, the present moment. And she realized, for the first time in a long time, that was exactly what she needed.

"I think that sounds perfect," she said, her voice soft with appreciation.

After breakfast, they set out on their impromptu adventure. They strolled along the beach, the sand warm beneath their feet, the waves cool as they kissed their toes. The resort was secluded, tucked away in a quiet cove, so there were only a few other guests. The peace was palpable, and Vee found herself letting go of the worries she had been carrying for so long.

As they walked, Rui talked about his childhood, his family, and his work. Vee shared bits and pieces of her life too, though she still held back in some ways. It was hard for her to be fully open, to allow herself to trust without hesitation. But there was something in the way Rui listened, his gaze never wavering, his interest genuine. It made her feel heard in a way she hadn't in a long time.

After their walk, they ended up at a cozy lounge overlooking the beach, sipping cocktails and laughing at each other's attempts at small talk. The day passed in a blur of easy conversation, quiet moments, and spontaneous decisions like picking out a small, handmade trinket from a local vendor and strolling through the garden paths, arms brushing every now and then.

By the time the evening arrived, the sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting vibrant hues of pink, orange, and purple across the sky. Vee found herself standing at the edge of the balcony, watching the sun sink lower into the sea. She hadn't felt this calm in months, maybe even years. The world around her seemed to slow down, and she could hear the rhythm of her own breath.

Rui joined her, standing quietly at her side. There was no need for words, not in this moment. They simply watched the sunset together, the vast ocean stretching out in front of them, endless and beautiful.

"This is perfect," Vee finally whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of the waves.

Rui looked at her, a smile tugging at his lips. "I'm glad you think so. We still have a whole weekend ahead of us."

Vee turned to face him, her heart swelling with something she couldn't quite name. There was a connection between them, something deeper than what she had anticipated. The uncertainty was still there, but it was no longer as heavy. For the first time in a while, she was starting to believe that maybe, just maybe, she could trust in this. In him.

And maybe, just maybe, she was starting to trust herself too.
