Chapter 28 - The breaking point

Kieran didn't go after her immediately.

Not this time.

Because he knew something had changed.

Not just in what she said—

But in how she said it.

Amara wasn't reacting.

She was deciding.

And that?

That scared him more than anything.

He stood there for a moment, watching the direction she left.

Then slowly…

He turned.

Zara was still there.

Waiting.

Watching.

And for the first time since she came back…

Kieran didn't feel indifferent.

He felt annoyed.

"You need to stop," he said, walking toward her.

Zara raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Stop what?"

"This," he gestured lightly between them.

"You showing up. Acting like there's still something here."

Zara tilted her head.

"I'm not acting."

That answer didn't sit well.

"There's nothing between us," Kieran said firmly.

"There was," she replied calmly.

"That's over."

Zara stepped closer.

"Is it?"

Kieran didn't move.

But his expression hardened.

"Yes."

Silence.

But Zara didn't step back.

Instead, she smiled slightly.

"Then why does it feel like you're trying so hard to convince yourself?"

That hit a nerve.

Because part of him knew—

This wasn't just about the past.

It was about how the past refused to stay there.

"I'm with Amara," he said.

"That should be enough."

Zara's smile faded just slightly.

"But is she enough for you?" she asked quietly.

That question was dangerous.

Not because it was true.

But because it was meant to create doubt.

Kieran shook his head.

"This isn't a game, Zara."

"It never was," she replied.

Another silence.

Then finally—

Kieran stepped back.

"I'm done with this," he said.

And this time…

He meant it.

Meanwhile—

Amara sat alone.

Not crying.

Not breaking down.

Just… thinking.

Because this time, she wasn't reacting emotionally.

She was thinking logically.

And that made everything heavier.

"Maybe this is who he is," she whispered.

Not in anger.

But in realization.

Because people don't just change completely.

They grow.

But parts of them stay the same.

And maybe…

Zara was one of those parts.

Her phone buzzed.

Kieran.

She stared at the screen.

It rang once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

A message followed.

"Can we talk?"

Amara exhaled slowly.

Because this was the moment.

The one where everything could either come together…

Or fall apart completely.

She stood up.

Not rushing.

Not hesitating.

Just moving.

When she got there, he was already waiting.

Of course he was.

"You came," he said softly.

"I said I needed actions," she replied.

"So I'm here."

That answer caught him off guard.

But he nodded.

"Fair."

Silence.

Heavy.

Real.

"I talked to her," he said.

Amara didn't respond.

"I told her it's over. Completely."

Still nothing.

"I meant it," he added.

Amara looked at him.

And this time…

Her eyes were different.

Not soft.

Not distant.

But serious.

"This is your last chance," she said.

Not emotional.

Not dramatic.

Just truth.

Kieran didn't hesitate.

"I know."

"If I feel disrespected again…"

She paused.

"I won't stay."

That landed hard.

Because this wasn't a threat.

It was a promise.

Kieran stepped closer.

"You won't have to," he said.

Amara held his gaze.

Searching.

Testing.

Trying to decide if she believed him.

And for the first time in a while…

She wasn't sure.

Because trust?

It wasn't fully broken.

But it wasn't fully healed either.

And standing there…

She realized something.

Love wasn't the hard part anymore.

Staying?

That was.
