Chapter 26 - The girl from his past

Amara thought the conversation would settle things.

And for a moment…

It did.

She felt lighter.

Like she had finally said what she needed to say.

Set her boundaries.

Made herself clear.

But peace?

It didn't last long.

Because the next time she saw Zara…

It wasn't from a distance.

It was up close.

Too close.

Amara had just stepped out of her lecture hall when she noticed her.

Standing there.

Waiting.

And this time…

Zara wasn't looking at Kieran.

She was looking at her.

Amara slowed down slightly.

That feeling again.

The quiet tension.

"Amara, right?" Zara said, stepping forward with a small smile.

Amara stopped.

"Yes."

Zara nodded.

"I've heard about you."

That wasn't comforting.

Amara kept her expression calm.

"Okay."

Zara tilted her head slightly, studying her.

"You're different from what I expected."

Amara raised an eyebrow.

"And what did you expect?"

Zara smiled faintly.

"Someone softer."

That word.

Amara almost laughed.

Almost.

"Well," she said calmly, "people change."

Zara's smile didn't fade.

"I can see that."

Silence.

But it wasn't empty.

It was filled with something unspoken.

Something sharp.

"You and Kieran seem… close," Zara added casually.

Amara didn't hesitate.

"We are."

That answer landed exactly the way she intended.

Clear.

Certain.

Zara nodded slowly.

"Interesting."

Before Amara could respond—

"Zara."

Kieran's voice cut in.

Both of them turned.

He walked toward them, his expression already tense.

"What are you doing?" he asked.

Zara shrugged lightly.

"Talking."

"To her?" he said.

There was something in his tone.

Something protective.

And Amara noticed.

"Relax," Zara said. "We're just getting to know each other."

Kieran didn't look convinced.

"You didn't need to."

Amara stepped in before it escalated.

"It's fine," she said calmly.

Both of them looked at her.

"I can speak for myself."

Kieran's expression softened slightly.

"Are you sure?"

Amara nodded.

"Yes."

Zara watched the exchange quietly.

Taking everything in.

Then she smiled again.

"You two are… interesting."

No one responded.

Because no one trusted that word.

"I'll see you around," Zara added, stepping back.

And just like that—

She walked away.

Leaving something behind.

Not her presence.

But her impact.

The air felt heavier.

Different.

Kieran exhaled.

"I'm sorry about that."

Amara looked at him.

"For what?"

"For her."

She shook her head slightly.

"She didn't do anything wrong."

"But she shouldn't have approached you."

"That's not the problem," Amara said.

Kieran frowned slightly.

"Then what is?"

Amara hesitated.

Because the answer?

It wasn't simple.

"It's the fact that she feels comfortable enough to," she said.

That hit.

Because it meant something deeper.

Something unspoken.

Kieran stepped closer.

"There's nothing between us."

"I believe you," Amara said.

And she meant it.

But still…

Something didn't sit right.

"Then prove it," she added softly.

Not as a challenge.

But as a need.

Kieran nodded slowly.

"I will."

And for the first time since Zara appeared…

Amara realized something.

This wasn't just about the past anymore.

It was about how the past…

Chooses to show up in the present.
