Chapter 47: Skin and Betrayal
The white moon no longer watched.
It judged.
Willowbrook High School – Main Hallway
The three newly awakened teenagers stood in the middle of the destruction, powers still raw and unstable.
Kenshi Yung raised both hands as a Hell creature lunged. The attack never reached him. A shimmering field of pure deflection erupted around his body, sending the enemy's own claws and momentum slamming back into itself with bone-breaking force. Kenshi stared at his hands in shock.
Beside him, Hikoru's body changed. Fox ears pushed through her hair. Multiple spectral tails of orange and white fire unfurled behind her. She opened her mouth and unleashed a devastating wave of Kitsune fox fire that turned an entire section of the corridor into a tunnel of screaming flame. The heat was so intense that even Ignis had to shield his eyes.
Zane no longer bothered hiding.
Cursed Matter poured from his skin like living liquid shadow, forming jagged spikes, shields, and tendrils that crushed anything that came near. The power he had kept buried for so long finally breathed in the open under the white moon.
The three of them stood together for the first time as what they truly were.
The Fight Against R. Dodger
Moses, Kyle, and Gwen had R. Dodger pressed hard. Bullets, experience, and pure parental fury forced the entity backward step by step. Sally still lay unconscious against the lockers where she had been thrown.
Then R. Dodger threw his head back and screamed.
"Nooo—!"
The sound was wrong. Wet. Tearing.
His skin began to split and peel away in long, grotesque sheets, falling to the floor like discarded clothing. Beneath it was not a demon.
It was Wyatt.
The real Wyatt Freeman stood there, trembling, eyes wide with horror and confusion, blood running from his nose and ears. The presence that had worn him like a coat was gone—or had moved.
Moses's shotgun lowered an inch. His voice broke.
"Son… how…?"
Before anyone could answer, the other Wyatt—the one who had been fighting beside them with the metal bat—moved.
He spun and smashed the bat across Bangu's temple with brutal force. Bangu dropped to one knee, blood spraying. In the same motion the false Wyatt drove a short blade into Ignis's side. Ignis gasped, flames sputtering as he staggered.
Lancelot Ito's bored expression finally vanished.
Water erupted around him in sharp, lethal constructs. "So that's how it is."
He launched himself at the bat-wielding Wyatt without another word. The two of them crashed through a classroom wall in a violent exchange of water blades and raw physical power.
The real Wyatt, skin still raw from the shedding, fell to his knees and stared at his own hands in pure trauma.
Realm of Mysteria
The crystal paths were failing faster now.
Nathan, Vespera, Lia Moonwhisperer, Eddie Gigglesworth, Grug, the Labyrinth Lord, and Paradonitious moved quickly toward the tear they had been tracking. The temporary agreement between Nathan and Vespera felt thinner with every step.
Vespera's eyes kept drifting to Lia.
The thought came unbidden and poisonous: One sacrifice. One pure Whisper used at the moment of sealing could close the tear permanently. The girl is convenient.
Vespera's decision settled in her chest like a stone.
She turned on the group with void energy already gathering.
"I'm sorry," she said, and reached for Lia.
She never finished the motion.
Eddie Gigglesworth moved faster than anyone expected. He drove a brutal kick straight into Vespera's midsection and sent her flying into a cluster of jagged crystal rock spikes. The impact forced a raw cry from her as the spikes pierced void-flesh. Before she could recover, Eddie grabbed Lia and pulled her behind him.
"Not today," Eddie growled, all traces of humor gone.
Nathan's illusions exploded outward in layered defense. The fragile alliance shattered in an instant.
Then the ground beneath them trembled.
A different kind of portal—ancient, sandy, and smelling of desert wind—tore open nearby. On the other side, the battlefield of Egypt briefly became visible: Zach, Derek, Gideon the Phantom, Ryan, Sylvana, Isaac, and Jonathan Smith still locked in combat against Pharaoh Salah's raging sandstorms.
The two groups stared at each other across the sudden tear between realms.
Nathan's eyes widened. "Zach?!"
Zach's voice came through the sand and wind, shocked. "Nathan—what the hell is happening?!"
The tear flickered, unstable but open. For the first time, the fighters of Mysteria and the fighters of Egypt could see one another clearly.
Vespera, still impaled on the crystal spikes, began to laugh through blood and void.
"Everything is falling apart so beautifully."
Guardians of Destiny Headquarters
The loss of Rona still hung over the hall like a funeral shroud.
Ofentse was barely holding himself together. Peter's body had been moved to a safer corner, the critical wound still untreated under the ongoing assault. Blinkstrike was being supported by a bloodied Jayse. Bane and Loki were both damaged from their clash with the Hell Knight. Koa's Desert Wolf spirit continued to tear through remaining Hell Guards, buying precious seconds.
Cohen's voice was iron. "We are not finished. Regroup and hold. Rona is still alive—we felt the portal seal with him inside. That means we can still reach him."
No one argued.
They simply tightened formation and continued the fight with the kind of grim determination that only appears after something precious has already been taken.
Willowbrook High School – Multiple Fronts
Lancelot and the bat-wielding Wyatt tore through another classroom in a vicious duel. Water spears and pressurized whips met metal and unnatural strength. Lancelot's nonchalant mask was gone; only cold focus remained.
Bangu forced himself back to his feet despite the head wound, eyes locked on the impostor. Ignis clutched his stabbed side, flames still burning in one hand, refusing to fall. Ri Kwon Jae and Lupin (still in werewolf form) moved to intercept lesser threats while keeping one eye on the real Wyatt, who remained on his knees in shock.
Moses, Kyle, and Gwen stood frozen for a heartbeat longer, staring at the son whose skin had just fallen away like a costume. Then training overrode horror. They turned their weapons toward the greater chaos still spreading through the school.
Kenshi's deflection field expanded as he protected a group of younger students. Hikoru's fox fire carved safe paths through blocked corridors. Zane's Cursed Matter formed walls and weapons with increasing control.
The school had become a complete war zone.
Across the Realms
In Egypt, Zach stared through the flickering tear at Nathan's group, sand still raging around him.
In Mysteria, Eddie kept Lia firmly behind him while Nathan prepared for Vespera's next move.
At the school, the real Wyatt whispered one broken word:
"…Kevin?"
And somewhere far deeper than any of them could reach, Rona's blood continued to drip onto black iron floors.
The finale of Volume 3 was no longer approaching.
It had already begun to close its fist around every single one of them.
To Be Continued…
